We stay at this park every year. It is difficult to get into and you must be very patient in trying to get in. Have several dates in mind. But, the fact that you are within walking distance to the beach, the quaint little town, many restaurants and so many activities, that it makes it worth the trouble! Been coming here first with our children and now they are bringing their children! We camped at Charles Mears State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is one of the hardest parks to get into along lake Michigan. We got lucky and got in after a cancellation. the state parks all have similar amenities. our site had 30 amp service. The pedestal was close to the site and no extension cord was needed. The plug on the pedestal was a little funny. Our surge system kept saying open ground. It took 3 trys and a separate extension cord for it to clear up. After that all was good for the weekend. This is a parking lot type camp ground on right on lake michigan. Some sites near the entrance have a nice view of the lake. Others in the back have the view blocked by the dunes on the shore. Most sites are spaced adaquetly but they are still a little close. Navigating the roads in the park was reasonable with our 35' motorhome. we did disconnect the toad as we entered. It was tight but we did fit the toad and the rv on the site. ATT had 4 bars of 4g. Verizon was about worthless at the back of the park. 3g if i got lucky. most of the time it was not usable. We camped at Charles Mears State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

in town by the big marina there is a cool little gourmet grocery store - Cenzo's. Lots of good food here and is worth a look. Many flavors of hummus. Nathan's pickles. even a nice selection of gluten free items.

Very neat site, right off the dunes. We arrved on Memorial Day so we had the entire park to ourselves. The beach and shoreline is beautiful at the park, and Pentwater is a very tiny town within walking distance (along the channel was a great route). Wasn't quite swimming weather during our stay, so there wasn't much to do within the part itself. Good place for a getaway with Lake Michigan sunsets steps away. We camped at Charles Mears State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Park is right on the beach with trails in the dunes and nearby woods. Stayed here late last fall and on opening weekend 2017. Will stay here again. Sites are close but big enough for the location. Bathrooms and showers are big and clean. We camped at Charles Mears State Park in a Motorhome.

We stayed 3 nights here and really liked it. We are new to camping. The beach being so close was awesome. And the campground is within walking distance to town which we really liked. The sites were sandy but that was fine considering the beach! We already have another couple nights booked for July! We camped at Charles Mears State Park in a Motorhome.

Yes, the sites are tight to get into, but I had room to put our trailer with the slide out and park my Super Duty next to it. On the other side, we had the awning out, the firepit, and still had room to have cornhole set up.

I don't think there's a site in here that's more than a 5 minute walk to the huge, soft sand beach on Lake Michigan. I loved having a separate dog friendly beach for my dogs. Note: you will get sand everywhere!

Climb the dunes by the beach for fantastic views of the water during the day or a million stars at night. Great sunset viewing on the beach that faces due west.

We were there on Memorial Day weekend and it was packed. Regular ranger patrols, along with local police patrols through the park kept the crazies in check.

It's a 5-10 minute walk to downtown Pentwater if you are looking to eat out, get groceries, shopping, etc.

We will definitely stay here again. We camped at Charles Mears State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is my new Love for Lake Michigan beach camping! Yes the sights are small and people are packed in. Lots of sand every where but all pads are paved. At first I thought oh no, I don't know about this place. It grew on me. If you are lucky enough to get a site that backs into the dunes they seem to be wider. All the dunes have trails to go up with a beautiful view of Lake Michigan, they also have benches to set and enjoy the view or watch the sunset. The beach is beautiful, the water is clean and clear, just a very short walk from your campsite. Very nice Rangers at the park and very helpful. People there are a bunch of happy campers. The small town of Pentwater is so cute with a lot of nice stores. We had a great AT&T 4G signal on both our phones and iPad. We will defiantly go back. We camped at Charles Mears State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Location, location, location! Yes, the sites are small(ish), yes there is not a lot of shade, but there are shady sites when the trees are in leaf! Yes, there is a LOT of sand - BUT - you are within feet of a gorgeous beach that has its own concession stand. You can walk to the beautiful village of Pentwater and enjoy bars, restaurants, shopping and art galleries! Tell me one other campground that has all this going for it at $24/night! It would be great if they had water and sewer hookups, but most Michigan State Parks do not, so it is not unusual. However, the location, the friendly folk, and the fun you can have there more than make up for ANY shortcomings. I am also not sure how you can rate a campground when you haven't stayed there! We camped at Charles Mears State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We didn't camp here but drove through the park to check it out while in the area. When we first entered, I thought it was a parking lot, as all I saw was asphalt with patches of sand in between and the odd tree. Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that this was actually the campground (the electrical posts gave it away!) If you like zero privacy and like to eat sand, then this is the place for you. Only benefit is the scenic location right beside the lake and sand dunes. We camped at Charles Mears State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

We like the beach so this campground was a great spot for us to camp. It is very tight quarters and most sites are not shaded, but all of them had paved pads for parking your RV. Lots of sand so be sure to have a broom to keep it out of the camper. The restroom/shower facility is very new. Our campsite (#139) was excellent. The lake was just over a dune from our site and we had a nice maple tree to help shade our site, although we kept the awning out because of the warm weather. The beach was great and the lake water was clear and sandy. Lots of lake shore activity with boats, jet skis, and swimming. The Pentwater River empties into Lake Michigan here and there is a nice walkway along the river where you can also fish from if you're so inclined. Downtown Pentwater is very close (about 3 blocks). Nice little shops and eateries in town, but there is not much in the way of grocery stores in Pentwater. Ludington isn't far away if you need supplies of any kind. We camped at Charles Mears State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

The area is beautiful. Walking distance to town with restaurants and stores. Campground has access to beautiful sand dunes and beach. The negative points are that the sites are very close together not very private and the bathrooms were a little dirty! We camped at Charles Mears State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a beautiful campground located right on the dunes of Lake Michigan in the town of Pentwater. A very short walk to the beach and long concrete pier. Great for biking as well. Very clean well-kept beach--water is clear. Store located on beach for snacks/ice cream. All sites are blacktopped. Only problem is they are a bit difficult to back into, but everyone seems to manage. Town is about 3-block walk and has restaurants and shops. We were very impressed and will camp here again. We camped at Charles Mears State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Nice location to take your kids to the beach (right over a small dune) on Lake Michigan. BUT - Rules are not enforced and there are 8 or more noisy partying adults on some sites, quiet time is listed as all the time - it was noisy all the time! Multiple dogs off leash. Streets are narrow and there is no privacy between the sites. Our fire ring was so close to our neighbors that we could not have a fire due to the smoke from theirs drifting over. We camped at Charles Mears State Park in a Motorhome.
