Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

The campground has two sections. The lower is right next to the lake, and some sites have a good view of the Mackinaw bridge. There are some swimming areas there. The sites in the lower section are generally closer together, shorter (although there are a few sites long enough for a class A or long fifth wheel). Some are not level, and some look like they tend to be muddy. Most are back-in sites.

The upper sites are more spacious and most are long pull-throughs. I don't know about the bathrooms in the lower section, but in the upper section they are great. Large, clean, and the showers are excellent: private rooms with plenty of hot water and no "push button" valves. The check-in procedure was aggravating. There may be an attendant at certain times of the year, but when we checked in, we had to stand in line to use a dedicated phone to the reservation desk. Even with a confirmed reservation, we had to provide all the check-in information again to the agent: name, address, credit card number, license number, camp site, number of people, etc. Then, when I was finished the agent told me I had to hang up the phone, that I couldn't hand it to the guy who had been standing there waiting (of course that guy was put on hold when he picked up the phone). They really need to fix that procedure.

There is constant noise from the traffic on I-75, but you tend to get used to it. If you are from out of state, buy the annual Michigan Park pass if you are going to stay in any Michigan park longer than 7 days. There are a few hiking trails in the park. The dump station and power is good. There is no water at the sites, drinking water is available at the dump station to fill your tanks. This park is good for it's location and close proximity to the Mackinaw Island ferries, and the "touristy" stuff in the area, but not for a good "rustic camping experience."

I would have rated it higher if it had not been for the aggravating check-in procedure. We camped at Straits State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Gang Plank Pub & Grill on the main drag in St. Ignace: good food at a reasonable price. The prices of all the ferries are the same, but we prefer Shepler's because of the better parking at the dock. If you catch their first two excursions in the morning, they take you under the Mackinaw Bridge with a narrated tour (same price).

Straits State Park is on the northern side along the lakes on the outskirts of the cute little lakeside town of St. Ignace. One would think that with 270 camping spots there would be plenty of room for everyone, but this place books up on weekends so call ahead to reserve a spot. We checked in on Friday, August 25, after making a reservation, and there were just a few empty campsites. The campground has sites of many sizes, suitable for tents up to 50 ft. rig pull-throughs. there is an upper and lower campground, the lower being closest to the lake. There is indeed lake shore camping, if you don't mind being close to your neighbors with lots of kids playing nearby. The water views are beautiful. We picked Site #249 in the upper campground, which was surrounded on 3 sides by cedar forest, level, shady and lovely, with an electrical hookup. First thing we noticed was the road noise from Interstate 75, a bit of an annoyance but tolerable. We headed out on our bikes to the town of St. Ignace, very picturesque with harbor lights, a boardwalk along the shoreline, shops and restaurants, and nice water views. We camped at Straits State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There are several private ferry companies located in St Ignace which will be happy to take you on the 40 minute trip to Mackinaw Island, where there is a historic fort and museum and the Mackinac Butterfly House and Conservatory. Round trip for the two of us with our bikes was $72, plus admission to the attractions on the island also require a fee.

This is the second of five MI state parks, and we are definitely impressed! Staff was friendly and helpful. Campsites are roomy, grass/gravel and fairly level. Our site was satellite-friendly, which we appreciate. Restrooms and showers are clean and relatively modern. Straits and the previous SP set the bar. We hope the next three maintain this standard. Well done, MI DNR! We camped at Straits State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed here kind of off-season so we registered on a phone at the ranger station. In addition to the cost of the campsite you need to purchase the Michigan state park pass which is good of the calendar year. Okay if you are planning on staying is several state campgrounds but costly for just one stay. We stayed in the lower loop with a beautiful view of the Mackinac Bridge, especially at night and were lucky to be assigned the former camp host site so despite the non-level site we had full-hookups. We camped at Straits State Park in a Motorhome.

This park is close to the boats for a trip to the island. By staying on the other side of the bridge there are more shops and restaurants available and the cost for a car and motorhome to cross the bridge is $14.

Park was clean and nice. Help here was nice enough, not the friendliest around, but I'm a southerner and I am used to a little bit more warmth than you get from service folks in this area of the country. One thing about the park, there were so many trees, we were not able to fold out our awning, so there is good and bad with all the trees. Beautiful view of the bridge from this park. Very convenient to ferrys to the island, and the town of St. Ignace. We camped at Straits State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Clean, well-maintained park, minutes from the amenities of the town of St. Ignace. Good paved interior roads; mostly level, gravel/grass sites, many with shade trees. Electric hookups, water available at Dump Station. Lakefront sites are in the lower campground; we stayed in the upper campground where the sites are roomier - more big-rig friendly. Lots of good places to walk my dogs. No one was at the check-in station; maybe because we stayed in late Sept,./early Oct., late in the season. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Straits State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

A nice state park located in the MI UP at the Mackanac bridge. The campground has three areas. We camped in the upper campground which has large pull-thru sites to handle larger rigs, it is walking distance to the lake. The two lower campgrounds are more for smaller rigs and tents. The roads are asphalt and the sites are gravel with grass between them. The showers are restrooms are ok. This is nice place to stay and see the area. Easy enough to get to; when headed north, cross the bridge and the make two right turns, takes you to the park entrance. Verizon service is good. Some spots have open sky for satellite and others have trees that block the view of the sky. Sites are electric only. Water and dump stations are available. Highly recommended for seeing the area. We camped at Straits State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Love this park! We arrived on a Sunday, left on Wednesday and wish we could have stayed longer! We do plan on coming back.

Our site was #35, in the eastern side of the lower campground. It was a great fully shaded spot - level with a dirt pad. The trees meant we could not get a satellite signal, but did help in the heat. We did have a heavy rain while we were here and the site drained well. The site was electric only (30/50 amp), but no water or sewer, although there was a water fill site at the dump station, and there was water available throughout the park. We had a decent AT&T signal, and the Verizon mobile hotspot also worked. There were several OTA TV stations.

The individual locking shower rooms and restrooms were brand new and kept very clean. The showers are push-button, and (hint for short people) the showerhead is mounted high enough my hair got wet - bring your shower cap!

The lower campground is at the base of the Mackinac Bridge, right on the Straits of Mackinac. There is beachfront, not sandy but rather rocky like many northern beaches. We enjoyed walking down and watching for lake freighters; they pass within sight of the shore.

One note for non-Michiganders: you will need to buy a Recreation Passport for $31, good through the end of the calendar year at all Michigan state parks, recreation areas and other facilities. We camped at Straits State Park in a Motorhome.

Visit the viewing platform at the park - it has a great view of the entire area!

We didn't have time to visit Mackinac Island, but were told that multiple ferry companies would pick you up at the campgrounds.

The Father Marquette National Memorial is in the park but separated from it by I-75; you will need to drive.

There is an upper & a lower campground here, with a view of the lake from the lower area. You will need to purchase a park pass ($9/day or $31/year). Only the upper area was open when we were here, but brand new bathhouses should be completed before they open the lower levels. The bathhouses in the upper area are clean, with individual uni-sex shower rooms. Roads are paved, but sites are either gravel or grass. Mature trees are throughout the campground with lots of grassy areas. You can fill with fresh water at the dump station on the way in because sites do not have sewer or water. We could only get 2-3 OTA TV stations here, but our Verizon Mifi worked well. We camped at Straits State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Modern restrooms with individual shower rooms that Michigan is building in their State Parks. Separate Recreational Passes required for your motorhome and towed vehicle at additional fee. Two camping areas i.e. Upper & Lower. We stayed in lower near the water and views of the Mackinac Bridge. Beach area has spectacular views. St. Ignace is a nice tourist town and home to several ferries to Mackinac Island with many restaurants and summertime activities. We camped at Straits State Park in a Motorhome.

Nice state park. Paved roads, easy to get in. Sites are grassy and large. Lots of trees for shade. We stayed in the upper campground, which does not have a view of the Straits or the Bridge. Good 30 amp electric. Dump station was easy to access. Hiking trails all over, including some that give you very good views of the Mackinac Bridge. The campground fills up on the weekend, so reservations are probably necessary. During the weekend it's easier to get in. There is a rocky beach of sorts that some people were using to go swimming. Excellent Verizon 4G signal. Good OTA television. Close to St. Ignace and everything you could need or want. We camped at Straits State Park in a Motorhome.

We loved the park - the sites are a little close together, but are otherwise well designed, and the roads are paved. They have some hiking trails, too. Although it's right next to the interstate, I could barely hear it even outside. The campground offers convenient access to the lake and to the Mackinac Island ferries. The views of the bridge on the trails are sometimes blocked by trees, but you can still get some great pictures. Take bug spray; the bugs were all over us when we were there, especially when we went to the beach at dusk to get some shots of the bridge.

My one gripe would be the employee that checked us in. We're from out of state, so we didn't know about the required car pass, which we had to pay for on the way in even though we'd already paid for the site. Then, he handed us the map of the campground and told us to have a nice day, not giving us directions to the site (after it was made clear we'd never camped in a Michigan state park before) - and, in fact, we initially pulled into the site the wrong way as a result. He definitely didn't seem in tune with how things normally work in a campground. We camped at Straits State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The Mackinac Bridge is easy to see and photograph from several places in the park; the Father Marquette memorial is part of the park (but separated physically and requires a drive). The Mackinac Island ferries are only a few miles away from the park. St. Ignace seemed like a nice little town, although we didn't have much time to explore it.

A typical well cared for Michigan state park. If you're a resident the annual passport for state parks is $11. A quirk in the system is that motor-coach owners have to buy a pass for both the coach and the toad while trailer towers only need a pass for the tow vehicle. If you're not a resident of Mi the annual pass is $39 per vehicle. Verizon mifi is the strongest we have encountered. Will stay here whenever in the area. Stayed two nights in the lower campground site 102 to view the bridge at night. The site was OK but in the forested area muddy and damp. We moved up to 169 in the top campground and it is great. You need to fill with fresh water at the RV dump at the entrance to the either camp. We will always stay here when in this area. We camped at Straits State Park in a Travel Trailer.
