Out of the many rustic national and state forest campgrounds I have visited over the years, this is one of the best. Sites come in a variety of sizes suitable for everything from the smallest tent to the largest fifth-wheel, though options for the latter are limited. Most sites are wooded and have excellent screening and distance from neighbors. Half to two-thirds of sites are located along the lake with either direct access to the water or access down a short trail and/or staircase. Other sites are located on the inland side of the access roads. Several outhouses are scattered throughout the campground. There are also pressurized water spigots, but the spigots do not have threaded ends to attach a hose.

Along with a variety of fish (smallmouth bass were all I encountered, but without much effort put in) and a couple of loons, the lake itself is host to a small number of homes/camps, but at the end of September and beginning of October, the atmosphere was as peaceful as good be. Night was nearly completely silent other than the loons and owls all around.

Staying here was a pleasure and I most certainly will be back, probably late in another season when occupants are few and solitude is golden. We camped at Marion Lake Campground USFS in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Check out the Sylvania Wilderness several miles west off Hwy. U.S. 2. Also check out Bond Falls, by far the Western Upper Peninsula's largest waterfall, to the north. Civilization is in short supply here - if you need supplies, Watersmeet is the place, and if you are into gambling, there is a casino just north of town.

This campground is part of the Ottawa National Forest. Our site must have been 100' deep as well as wide and was a pull through. The sites are so large and wooded that we couldn't even see the campsites next to us. Almost all the sites are on the lake. Depending on your elevation you either had a path going to the water, or for the higher sites individual staircases down to the lake. Some of the waterfronts are sandy and others are more rocky. All sites had fire rings and poles (not high enough for bear poles but we used for garbage anyway, and for hanging our lantern at night). Primitive campground, only pit toilets, water pumps and no showers. They have a large group camp area, a beach and a park. No reservations, first come first serve. While the sites are big enough for even the biggest rigs, we did have a lot of branches to contend with on the campground loop. We camped at Marion Lake Campground USFS in a Motorhome.
