We are always looking for a good stopping point near I-75 just south of the Mackinaw Bridge for our trips to the Upper Peninsula (The St. Ignace Casino keeps getting more and more popular). When I saw this 8.0 campground, 3 miles from exit, with pull through sites and billed as big rig friendly, I though I'd found a new go-to place. My misgivings began as we drove 1.75 miles down a dusty, washboard gravel road. Averaging less than 15 mph, we will passed by multiple locals doing 50+ and billowing dust took our visibility to nearly zero. The rig is filthy and our toad is unrecognizable. As we turned into the campground, we missed the tiny sign "office" with an arrow pointing straight. We turned left and found the office down that road. The owner gave us a pull through, which turned out to be two back-to-back sites for the price of one. She said if we continued down the road we would have no problem pulling into site without unhooking. Maybe, had we not minded scratching the driver's side on a tree limb--no, the ill placed fire ring on the other side would have still been in our path. We reverted to Plan B--circling the campground and pulling through from the other direction. This wide loop route was very bumpy. We came up to the last turn, which we could not make without scratching either one or the other side of the rig. Unhook toad, back up, square up as best we can, squeeze between two trees and dodge potholes on each side. Hookups are now on wrong side, electric cord and hose are under rig (always fun). Only two roads in park have enough gravel to be decent to drive. Won't be able to get out of site with toad attached. Electrical service is limited to 30 amp--only one A/C unit running and turned off to cook supper. Bathrooms/showers/laundry are clean?, but shabby and tired. Attraction seems to be tubing or kayaking the Sturgeon River behind campsites or four-wheeling in the area. Fine for TT's less than 30'. Fifth wheels and big rigs beware. No dump station - just mobile dumps - warning sign in office to call ahead. Plenty other places to camp. We camped at Sturgeon Valley Campground (formerly Sturgeon River Campground) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

NOT Big Rig friendly - 1.75 miles on washboard gravel road. When you pull in, stay straight, do not turn. Park your rig asap and walk to office. The further you go into this campground, the more trouble you'll incur.

We stayed for a weekend, and the owners were awesome! They provided free transportation so that we could kayak down the beautiful Sturgeon River. The campground is very nice with the river running right through the back property. Beautiful trails for walks and close to a bike path. This is a very well maintained park with owners that aren't out to nickel & dime you. Had to use the camp store a couple of times and wondered if they were making any profit at all on my items. The only bummer is the dirt road it is located on, but you are only on it for 1-3/4 miles. It was a very peaceful stay enjoying some of the beauties of this area. We will be back! It will be perfect for our annual group outing! We camped at Sturgeon Valley Campground (formerly Sturgeon River Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Mackinac Bridge/City/Island is only 1/2 hour away - Great day trip! Drive down the dirt road to the East and there is an Elk viewing station. Lots of cool things to see!

Thought this was a nice camp ground. Well apparently it is more of a farm and junkyard with campers thrown in. There are rabbit and chicken free ranging everywhere. I was there for four day, the trash can in the mens restroom was over flowing from the second day on, the trash cans throughout the park were also full all weekend. The owners and owners children drove by about 50 times and waved every time but could not dump the trash. I think their lawn mower must also be broken as the grass was quite shaggy. I really would not recommend this campground to anyone. We spoke to other campers that said it has went down hill in the last couple years. We stayed here over Labor Day weekend. Wonderful hosts, welcoming, helpful and friendly. Real family camping at it's best. Large sites, grassy, everything well maintained. Big rig friendly, pet friendly. Tubing, kayaking in the Sturgeon River on site, volleyball and baseball area for the kids. Facilities very clean. No sewer hookups, but the owner will be at the dump station to help you out. Real country feel at this campground, the way real camping used to be. The owners gave us recommendations on things to see on our route home, which were fantastic. Loved it here, we will return. We camped at Sturgeon Valley Campground (formerly Sturgeon River Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

This campground has reverted back to the original owners and is now called the Sturgeon VALLEY Campground. www.sturgeonvalleycampground.com The new owners are very nice, and are sad there's so much confusion about whether they're open or not. The grounds are beautiful, almost park-like: and the shady/grassy sites are the biggest I've ever seen in all my years of camping. We stayed here before and loved it. We'll come back again next year with our kayaking group, since the access to the Sturgeon River is so handy!! This RV Park is in the middle of Outdoor Lover's Paradise!! Several of us from a kayak club stayed here either in the motorhome or tent. For the Sturgeon River paddle: we simply launched from the lovely mowed lawn of the park's Frisbee Golf course and met the rest of our group in Wolverine, about 3 miles by water downstream. The folks in the site next to us had ORVs, so there must be trails nearby; plus a biking/hiking trail is across the street. The whole setting is park-like and tranquil. The owners are very nice; and the level, grassy and partly-shaded sites are all 55' x 75', which is HUGE compared to most private RV parks. We will DEFINITELY be back for next year's paddle. I think some of the folks who opted for no-showers and pit-toilets at the State campground will be opting for this place, too! Clean campground and bath facilities. Great location for Mackinaw, Petoskey and the UP. Owners accommodating, laundry room clean. We would definitely stay here again. Rough road for a little over a mile, but camp roads are well maintained. We camped at Sturgeon Valley Campground (formerly Sturgeon River Campground) in a Motorhome.

Very clean and well groomed campground with a nice family feel. We stayed only one night while traveling but would come back if ever in this area. The only negatives are the mile and a half rough dirt road leading to the campground, and the staff not on site when they said they would be when we called. Neither was a huge problem. Long ways down a bumpy dirt road. Very nice couple run this campground. Grassy sites, pool is a pond that did NOT look inviting. Sturgeon River flows next to this campground, but the grass/weeds were severely overgrown next to it. We camped at Sturgeon Valley Campground (formerly Sturgeon River Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.
