This campground is North woods rustic--not romantic upscale rustic, but simply pure woodsy rustic. When you head west from Grand Marais, you leave behind cell service, internet, TV, grocery stores, and diesel fuel (although there is limited WiFi in the office). The Gunflint area is beautiful and there are numerous lakes to canoe/kayak. The lodge and general store are very nice with abundant supplies. The owner is very knowledgeable about the area, helpful and friendly--but she's super busy. Sites 15 and 17 are nice, spacious and long pull through sites. Site 17 is fairly level and very private. There are two showers in both the men and women's bathhouse. In the women's restroom, there was no soap or paper towels for the 3 days we were there. There is basic food service in the lodge (pizza, etc), laundry, sauna and boat launch area for Gunflin t Lake. Our site did not have a lake view, but several on the lake side had nice views(smaller sites for smaller trailers). Our only complaint is that the one-way circle road is way too narrow for a trailer our size (33 feet). We had a struggle trying to get to the dump site--had to back our trailer up a few times to make the sharp turn. Lots of trees and brush on both sides of the road made it very tight. Several old cars, boat, trailers parked right at the entrance didn't help. Overall experience was good if you're into a more rustic camping experience. We camped at Gunflint Pines resort and Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

We loved our dinner at Trail Center Lodge (about 15 miles east of the campground). Many access points on numerous lakes in Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. We kayaked on Seagull Lake, Iron Lake, and Round Lake. Also the Chik Wauk Museum and Nature Center at the far end of Gunflint Trail (near Seagull Lake) was very nice.

We are newbie RVers and wanted to experience the great outdoors. This spot was perfect. We had a wonderful site with water and electric and, since we were kinda new at all of this, our host helped us quite a bit. The lake was gorgeous and we heard loons and coyotes at night. Shower house and bathrooms were spotless with plenty of hot water to remove the (very necessary) mosquito repellent (it's Minnesota in the summer, so mosquitoes are the norm.) One hour drive into Grand Marais for a day of shopping and great food. Hiking trails were fun, as was the museum at the end of Gunflint Trail. We love this campground and will definitely be back.. We camped at Gunflint Pines resort and Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Beautiful small campground/resort. Please note although address is Grand Marais it is 43 miles northwest on the Gunflint Trail. So far north that 1/2 of Gunflint Lake is in Ontario Canada. Pros: secluded setting, lake within yards, small camp store/gift shop on site, more upscale resort, restaurant/bistro, and riding stable 1/4 mile down road, walking trails, free canoe use, boat & pontoon rentals, VERY pet friendly. Cons: no phone/cell service, campsites are on the small side, bath house is old and water pressure weak. Will return! We camped at Gunflint Pines resort and Campground in a Motorhome.
