Overall Rating:

The location near Lake Itasca is great. There are well-marked hiking and biking trails. The reason for a less than 10 rating: 1 hour wait in a single lane drive through that has the only 2 RV water fill & and only 1 dump station for 2 campgrounds totaling 238 sites. I will try to post photos of this very poorly planned area. There is such a short hose at the dump site that there's no way to rinse your black water tank with it. There are water faucets in the campground, but they do not have threads for attaching a hose. The sites in the Bear Paw Campground, 81 sites and closest to the lake, are partly shaded and quite close together. Showers are centrally located, and there are 2 other restroom buildings with flush toilets and hot water and electricity. The hosts are friendly and helpful. We drove through the larger (157 sites) Pine Ridge Campground, and there was more space between sites and/or more shade there. There's lots to see and do, including wading across the Mississippi at its source, listening to loons and watching osprey and eagles. Arriving/departing in the AM or evening might help avoid the very long wait to fill your RV with water or dump it when leaving. Mid-afternoon seems to be peak time for that. We camped at Itasca State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Visit the Headwaters of the Mississippi, park Visitors' Center and Douglas Lodge. Hike any of the well-marked trails. There are trail lengths to suit everyone. Climb the fire tower for a great view of the park from above. Arrive AM or evening with an RV to avoid a very long wait to fill with water or arrive with a full tank - same with using the dump station.

Spots are very open, no privacy at all. The campground was busy but quiet. Two to three days are all you need to visit Itasca. We camped at Itasca State Park in a Tent Trailer.

Don't plan on spending more than a couple days here...just not much to do. Walking across the Mississippi is about it, the beach at the park is not that big and isn't a great beach anyhow.

We stayed after Oct 1 which means the bathhouses are closed for the winter. There were pit toilets available. We camped in the Bearpaw section. It was not too busy and fairly quiet. The campground roads were a bit small and somewhat rough. We had a large gravel site and felt the distance between camp sites was good and we had a decent view of the lake with most leaves now off the trees. There is no water or sewer at the sites so plan accordingly. There is lots of trails, two visitor centers, historic points, a beach and boat rentals available during the summer months. We camped at Itasca State Park in a Travel Trailer.

20 miles to town and minimal cell service and no tv channels. Our WiFi hotspot did not work at all but it was nice to get away from all that for a few days. We had to entertain ourselves! Nice historic park built in the 1930s

Sites are close together with little privacy. Showers are individual "rooms" with green/red lights outside to let others know if it is in use. High pressured spray, and a nice big changing area where your things will not get wet. Quiet hours were written but not enforced. Our neighbors were outside partying until 4:30 am, and went in when it started raining. The host was only two spots down from them, and must have been wearing earplugs. Otherwise, it is a beautiful campground with nice bike paths, a great visitors center, and opportunities to rent boats. Be sure to bring your bug spray! Electric only--no water or sewer. One dump site/water fill station for both campgrounds, so plan for some waiting, although we luckily did not have to wait. We camped at Itasca State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

The rate noted is for a 50 amp hookup site. It does not include the required daily entry fee or purchase, as we did, of an annual pass for motorhome and towed vehicle for $43 per year. There are two campgrounds in this park, Pine Ridge with 158 sites and Bear Paw with 81 sites. They are about three miles apart; we stayed at both since we could not get a single site for the time we wanted to stay. Be aware that, although the address of the park is Park Rapids, it is about 25 miles north of the town. Both campgrounds are heavily wooded, with Bear Paw having more vegetation for visual separation and a calmer feel; Pine Ridge is very open with no visual separation. Bear Paw is along the lake and a few sites have glimpses of the lake. Both campgrounds are very busy and full during prime season as this is one of the states premiere park with lots of things to do. In Pine Ridge we had 50 amp hook-up; the power either went out or browned out once or twice per day during our visit. At Bear Paw we were dry camping. Fill water for tanks is at the single dump station at Bear Paw. It is very busy since there is only this one dump for all 231 sites! Most sites were fairly level dirt/gravel. After a heavy rain, our site became a swimming hole, almost. We enjoyed our stay and would stay here again. In planning, take into account the 4 p.m. check-out time. We camped at Itasca State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There is hiking, biking a boating within the park. There are many trails, but you will have to contend with a healthy batch of mosquitoes. Also, because of a recent storm, there were trees across many of the trails. You can take a tour boat on the lake or rent a boat to take out on your own. There is a great bike trip combining the paved bike path with the Wilderness Loop road. Come well stocked as groceries are a long way away.

Nice park but very busy. Stayed here for a family reunion at the Ozawindib group camp. Wish we had brought our bikes!

Some of the main roads accessing the park (east entrance and road to Pine Ridge campground), need to be brushed so you don't brush against tree limbs every time you meet another vehicle. It is a shame that the park does not check this out!

Our site was good and had good separation. Electric only, so be sure to get water and dump tanks. One spigot we found to fill tanks did not have any threading on it so had to find another one. We camped at Itasca State Park in a Motorhome.

This state park is absolutely beautiful. It is well used but still kept very clean. We camped in the Oak and Spruce Loops. A paved trail takes you to the lake front where you can enjoy the lake, swim, fish, and rent bicycles and boats. There is a nice sand beach with shallow water and a sand bottom. The lake is gorgeous. It is shaped like an inverted "Y", and each arm is very thin, so you can see the green forest on the other side. The headwaters of the Mississippi are at one end of the lake. The water is shallow there, so you can wade and take your picture walking across on stepping stones.

The campsites have electricity only. Some of the water sources along the road are set up for you to fill your tanks, others are not. The dump is in the Bear Paw campground a mile or so away. The campsites are spacious and widely spaced. Ours was level.

There is lots to do here. Bring your bicycles, everyone gets around on bikes. There is an extensive paved trail system for bicycles throughout the park. There was a very nice playground on our loop that was always full of happy children. If you get tired of doing things, you can always just sit back and enjoy the peace. A very lovely spot. We camped at Itasca State Park in a Motorhome.

When we drove in to get a site my husband was sick and the lady at office was very helpful. we got a site right next to the bathrooms. I am not usually the one to back into site and a very nice gentleman came out and helped me back it in. The area is beautiful and well worth a stay...want to go back and stay longer.

There is fishing, hiking, biking, there is an area for swimming. Great area to go to also for peace and quiet.

Be ready to enjoy taking hikes on their beautiful trails and bring a bike if you have one; otherwise, up the road is a place to rent one. Love this campground, well taken care of, plenty for all to do or sit back and listen to the quiet. The road back is even pretty. We camped at Itasca State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Loved this state park. Roads windy and narrow getting into the park. Only 1 pull through. All other sites back in. Our campsite not really wide but plenty long for 40' motorhome and tow vehicle. Lots of privacy between sites. No water, fill your tanks, 50 amp. Lots to do, lots to see. There are RV parks around Itasca SP, you will not regret staying IN the park. Itasca would be spectacular in the Fall. We will be back. We camped at Itasca State Park in a Motorhome.

Our rate was $23 per night plus the $5 per day entrance fee for an electric only site. Water is available at the dump station. The bike trails are currently closed for reconstruction. There is a lot to do in this park. Walking across the Mississippi and climbing the fire lookout tower were highlights. We would stay here again. We camped at Itasca State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Twenty eight per night was for a 50 amp electric only in the Pine Ridge campground. In addition, there is daily parking permit of $5 or you can purchase an annual MN state parking pass for $25, which is good for 12 consecutive months from the date of purchase. Many recreational opportunities are available in the park and surrounding areas including biking/hiking/cross country skiing trails. The headwater for the Mississippi River is located within the park. This first state park in MN has over 100 lakes within this 32,000 acres border. The campgrounds are located at least a five miles drive on windy but scenic paved roads into the park from any of the three entrances. The surrounding area is sparsely populated with the nearest “big store” shopping over 20 miles away. Spacing between sites is generous and most sites are level or need only modest leveling. Pine Ridge campground is heavily treed. We received two bars of 3G on our AT&T phone. There is free Wi-Fi at both campgrounds and a couple of other locations in the park, which worked well. We camped at Itasca State Park in a Motorhome.

Nice State Park. It is a very busy park. There is a lot to do here. You can go up and walk through the Headwaters of the Mississippi River on the north side of the park. I would suggest reservations well in advance here. This park has very good signage marking where things are and how to get to them. We camped at Itasca State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Pricey, but very nice. So nice that we are scheming about how to get back here (we are from California and don't tend to get this far north very often) for a longer stay. This state park felt like a national park with so much to do: bike rentals, all kinds of boats for rent, a really nice 4+ mile walk to/from the headwaters from the campground, nice sites. (Yes, a bit unlevel, but there are precious few state parks that aren't.) Well-maintained: I suppose that explains the $$ Dogs are allowed on all trails, which was nice, too. Nice park with lots of bike paths and hiking trails. Sites are not real level and can pose a problem for a 40' motorhome to get into. Trees could use some trimming to avoid possible scrapes down RV's. Ranger presence was noticeable in the park. Several fellow campers felt the need to go way to fast in the camping area where a 10mph speed limit was posted. Restrooms and showers were very clean and well kept. We camped at Itasca State Park in a Motorhome.
