Pros - staff was very helpful. Water wasn't turned on yet for the season and staff allowed us to fill up at their maintenance shop. Site was private, had trees between lots to maintain privacy between neighboring campers. Hiking trails were close by and access to historic Forestville was only about a mile away.

Cons - our biggest complaint was the requirement to actually stick the parking passes to our vehicles window. Beyond that, we didn't really have any complaints.

Overall - we are still exploring the many campgrounds around, but won't hesitate to stay here again if we just want to camp and go somewhere we know! We camped at Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

We were able to walk through historic Forestville. We will go back to see Mystery Cave when our child is a little older.

I find it hard to criticize any of the state parks in MN. Given that for busy weekends if you don't make your reservation literally 365 days in advance you may be out of luck is a good recommendation that these parks are great. Forestville has 3 campground loops. Each is unique - one for electric, one non-electric but very woodsy and inviting and one rustic, woodsy area. There is also a large horse camp further in the park and this may be one of the main attractions of the park. I anticipated not so great hiking due to very wet weather and shored hiking/horse trails. To my surprise the trails were pretty good. There are many easy loops for easy hiking. The only drawback if you can call it that is that if you go to bike the state bike trails. It's probably about 8-10 miles from the trailhead. The park and sites are very pleasant. I'd call this a relaxing campground. Fishing, morel mushroom hunting, etc... are popular. We camped in the electric loop and our site was very spacious and private. Worth it if you want to visit the Lanesboro area. We camped at Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We had a great stay here at this campground. The sites were clean, as well as the bathrooms. There were many activities for the kids the park offered. I highly suggest the flashlight tour as well. One thing though...there is nothing around in the area. Bring what you need, because you will have to go without. There is also no cell service in the camp area...drive out and up the hill to get a signal. Fun place!!!! We camped at Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park in a Tent Trailer.

Great campground with paved sites, excellent rest rooms, and individual showers. If you go after Labor Day, be aware that the tours of Forestville and Mystery Cave are only available on weekends. We camped at Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Out of the way park, but very scenic. Small loop, but nice large sites. Camped in the early part of the week in early August. Was about 1/3 full. Each site is shady and private. Excellent hiking although it is a horse friendly park so some care needs to be taken on the trails. We camped at Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park in a Motorhome.

While this park is really made for horseback riders, we hiked the whole park and found it wonderfully diverse. The Best time is in the fall when the colors give the canopy a special glow. The tenting sites seem to always be available and if you can dry camp, that's what I would recommend. You should take the tour of the Mystery Cave while there in spring. The big cave closes in the fall and winter but the small cave tour is fine too. We camped at Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park in a Tent Trailer.

Great park in a scenic area. Rolling foothills and rivers. Location is convenient to Preston, Lanesboro, & Harmony. Lanesboro in particular is a must-see. Campground is very clean and well maintained, but there aren't many activities for kids, which keeps the rating down. Plenty of hiking trails through park. Sites are not huge, but private and separated by trees. Only 23 of the sites are electric, and be sure to call in advance to verify if your rig can be easily maneuvered. Some sites are harder than others. Mystery Cave is a must-see, but costs extra and is a 10-15 minute drive from the campground. We camped at Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park in a Fifth Wheel.
