First - see the review dated July 2010 - it summarizes most of what I'd share about the layout of each campground. Bottom line - the Lower Campground is a traditional state park campground. The Upper Campground is newer - and while the sites are mostly spaced far apart (see addt'l notes on that below, there is essentially no tree coverage whatsoever. You're staying in prairie. There are trade offs for that: the shower building is much newer and features individual lockable shower stalls that each have their own access from the outside of the building - awesome. There are some FULL hookup (sewer/water/electric) sites available, as well as several pull-through sites. However, the loops are paved. Why is this bad? Because most people drive on it like it's a roadway rather than a place children are playing. Here are my site tips for the UPPER campground only: Do not camp in 18 if you can help it - it's next to the restroom building and EVERYONE seems to drive to the building at all hours rather than walk. Super disruptive to your relaxation time around the fire. 33 and 40 are excellent sites - at the top of the bluff overlooking the lake...great spots if you can get them. 30/31 and 35/36 are suuuuper close together but the state park site discloses that. Only do one of those if you're going with someone else or have no other options. They are RIGHT next to each other. Be sure to check out the state record cottonwood tree and Hiking Club trail (accessible via Lower Campground) while you're there! We camped at Lac qui Parle State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed here over Memorial Weekend. It is a very wide open campground with very few trees. The views are very pretty of Lac Qi Parle. We stayed in the upper part of the campground. It was too windy to use our awning. We loved our site, but when we walked around found a few that we liked better. Very quiet and peaceful park. Staff was great. No shade. We will be staying here again for sure. They have about 7 sites that have electric/water and sewer. Very clean park. We camped at Lac qui Parle State Park in a Motorhome.

$30 per night was for a full hookup site in the upper campground. In addition, there is daily parking permit of $5 or you can purchase an annual MN state parking pass for $25, which is good for 12 consecutive months from the date of purchase. Many recreational opportunities are available in the surrounding areas including biking/hiking/cross country skiing trails. Campground is within manageable driving distances for shopping and other activities. Spacing between sites is generous and most sites are level or need only modest leveling. Sites are all in full sun in the open prairie in the upper campground. We received three bars of 4G on our AT&T phone. We camped at Lac qui Parle State Park in a Motorhome.

Nice peaceful state park. Nice lakes, trails, and other things to do. We stayed in the Lower Campground; it only has electric hookups. The signage to find the campground's the office was not marked well at all. We camped at Lac qui Parle State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Date of Stay: July, 2010 - $28.00

Best understood as two separate facilities, the "lower campground" is part of Lac Qui Parle State Park proper while the "upper campground" is several miles away by car. The "lower campground" is typical of Minnesota state parks with tree cover, a swimming beach, group camps, a boat launch, canoe rentals, and other amenities. The sites are of moderate size, most have electrical hookups, and there is a shared water hydrant. The lower campground also includes an equestrian facility. Signage states that it is for day use only, and it was not in use during our stay. The "upper campground" was constructed in the last few years on a previously unforested area high on the valley rim above the lake. Most of these sites have full hookups including sewer and water, as well as 50A electrical service. The sites are unusually widely spaced and are deep, and are ideal for rigs of any size. However, the sites lack tree cover. There's no shade and no protection from the wind. The lake is the main attraction here with the trail system being an afterthought. Most trails run parallel to the access roads. We camped at Lac qui Parle State Park in a Travel Trailer.
