This tiny campground is attached to the Mississippi Petrified Forest. Staying at the campground gives you a discount at the Forest. The campground is heavily wooded with a dirt/gravel road through it. Our site was full service. Some of the full-time campers look like they work construction in the region and camp there because of the price. That said, everything felt safe and well cared for. There are lots of picnic areas and open green space around the entrance, as if the Forest is a frequent stop for school groups. The Petrified Forest is a fascinating 45-60 minute self-guided walk. It is really interesting if you like fossils and such. We arrived after lunch, went through the Forest, camped overnight and left the next day. There isn't much else to do while you are there. The Forest is just off the Natchez Trace. We camped at Mississippi Petrified Forest Campground in a Motorhome.

We pulled in on a whim because we are fossil fans. The Petrified Forest is privately owned and has an attached campsite with room for eleven rigs. They charge a modest $22/night. The full service campsites are neat, clean, well maintained. A maintenance worker came by for morning clean up and check on things. An employee came by in the afternoon to check that all was well. The road are narrow and the turns on the one big loop are little on the tighter side but not impossible for our rig and there were no trees and hazards near the road. The roads themselves were surface washed out in a few spots but there was also a lot of fresh gravel as if being on a hillside it is constant struggle to keep the roads from washing out. The setting is overall beautiful trees and shady. Some campsites are close together, most are widely spaced. There are both pull throughs and back ins. There are some longer term residents but the owners limit those to 6 months and I presume they are employees because their rigs were all neat and newer. There was a long list of rules but none onerous for a short term stay. We were originally sent to #7 but the very nice lady checking us in said we could change to #8 if we wanted to. This was a good thing because #8 was not long enough for our rig to find a level spot without unhitching. #8 was just long enough that we could be both level and stay hitched. There was no wifi available. Overall a very good value and we were pleased with our stay. I wouldn't go out of my way to stay here again, but it was well worth stopping and seeing once. We camped at Mississippi Petrified Forest Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The trail through the petrified forest is well laid out and a pleasant walk of 45 minutes with a written guide to the sights. It is available for a discounted fee of $5 if you are camping there. If you like fossils and minerals they have one of the best selections that I have seen in one place in their museum and gift shop.

This was a small park with mostly permanent campers. The spot we had was very shady and hard to level. There were really only 3 sites for overnighters. Had anyone gotten the site next to us it would have been too close. The walk through the park was nice. There was little else to do, although the day use area had plenty of space for playing. We stayed two nights but one would be better. The only place to walk is on a county road which was not busy thankfully. It was very quiet and the tent sites were a good ways from the bathrooms. We camped at Mississippi Petrified Forest Campground in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Camp has nice hillside sites under trees that are well separated. I suggest that a 4x4 is needed for some of the upper level sandy sites if pulling a medium to large trailer. Staff was very friendly and helpful. The self-guided Petrified Forest walking tour was very interesting for all ages above 7 years old. The price vs. site quality was exceptional. We camped at Mississippi Petrified Forest Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We visited this campground as a Cub Scout Pack. We had about 50 people in 14 or 15 tents. Staff was very friendly and accommodating, and gave a discount since we were Cub Scouts. Self guided tour was very interesting, and has a well stocked gift shop. We camped at Mississippi Petrified Forest Campground in a Tent.

Date of Stay: January, 2009 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

The campground is wooded, and quiet. The sites are spacious, and moderately level for a trailer. A motorhome may have a harder time. We were able to get a satellite signal, however we were there in January. Restrooms were clean but modest. The restrooms are shared by the Forest picnic area. There are two showers, accessed by a code lock, for campers only. The Petrified forest is well worth a visit. Part of the self guided tour is handicap accessable. The staff is vary friendly and knowledgeable. We camped at Mississippi Petrified Forest Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This park is very quiet, we were the only ones there the two days we stayed here. The entire park is very shady which helps with the heat, but leaves, limbs and sticky tree droppings fell on our truck/rv. The park is situated on the side of a hill, so the sites were not level, and all dirt and gravel. We were in site 2 which seemed more level than the others, but there were a lot of roots to contend with. The pavilion/picnic area was large and well maintained, but the sites were in desperate need of attention. It was hard to even locate the sites. We had no problems with any of the hookups. All worked good. Their website says 20 amp, but they do have 30 amp. We would not recommend this park, especially if it is raining, has rained, or looks like rain. Keep driving. We camped at Mississippi Petrified Forest Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This is a quiet, shaded campground associated with the attached Petrified Forest. Only one or two sites would accommodate our 40 foot 5th wheel, but they were nice. Very friendly and helpful staff. It was very peaceful here. It was good for an overnight or if you are visiting the Petrified Forest. There is lots of room for kids to run or ride bikes, but there are no activities or amenities for them. We camped at Mississippi Petrified Forest Campground in a Fifth Wheel.
