Beautiful park. Most sites had electric hook up with water available in numerous places throughout the campgrounds to fill your fresh water tanks. Lots of trees. Plenty of shade. The trade off was no satellite or antenna service for your TV if you have one. Very friendly hosts who came to our site as we arrived to check us in. We were at campsite 9 and were hoping to do some fishing from the shoreline but the trees and overgrowth was so thick it was impossible to get to the water's edge. Lots of deer all times of the day. We did not use the bathrooms or showers as our TT had its own facilities. We will be coming back as it is a beautiful park with a restaurant, a small store with basic food items and you can also rent rafts and canoes if you wish. The only bad thing I can think of is that backing into your campsite can sometimes be challenging as the wooden posts that hold the site number and the vacancy status were very close to the roadway and were not tall enough to see over the front our of truck. We camped at Sam A Baker State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

The park has nice walking trails and beautiful streams, along with a nice camp store. However, the bathrooms and shower houses are deplorable. They are long overdue for a remodel, and mold/mildew abounds. The wife found a used feminine hygiene item in the shower. If you have a camper with your own bath and toilet, you'll love the park. If you have a pop up camper, or camp in a tent, the bathrooms /shower houses are rough. We camped at Sam A Baker State Park in a Tent Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

If you go to the Shut-Ins to swim, don't use the blue trail. It's nice, but not exactly well marked and takes about 45 minutes. On the other hand, the gated maintenance road, near the trailhead for the blue trail, I have heard it takes about 20 minutes to get to the Shut-Ins. I did not try this road but was told it is a shortcut.

Overall Rating:

Nice woodlands campground; a lot like Montauk SP to the west - open, with many beautiful mature trees; W & E, dump station; standing water around for a while when rainy; old lodge with restaurant out-of-service; much deferred maintenance; some hiking trails; access to trout stream (spring & runoff fed); remote. We camped at Sam A Baker State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The loop drive around Mudlick Mountain that goes north and west on 143 through Des Arc, then south on 49 through Piedmont (good grocery store), then back east on 34 through Patterson is pretty and interesting.

Beautiful setting. Kids had a great time playing at the river and checking out the exhibits at the Visitor's Center. We saw deer roaming the park nearly every day. Fairly well stocked general store, but lots of "stuff". If you have the ability, take your bikes because they have a wonderful bike and walking trail. Make sure you fill your fresh water tanks before you set-up camp, they do not have water at the sites. We camped at Sam A Baker State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This is a beautiful park, it has a lot to offer, a small store, restaurant, canoe rentals and more. The sites are nice. We had 119, a very nice site. The St. Francois River is within walking distance, is crystal clear and so refreshing. My biggest complaints are the host and staff. We got here on a Friday about 5PM. We did not even see the host till late the next morning, than he had an attitude. One of our friends got in about 8:30. Their reserved site had someone else in it when they arrived. They talked to the host, who wasn't happy to be awakened, than not helpful to resolve the matter. The restrooms and showers were closed and cleaned from 8-9 or 10 AM. This should be done earlier than 8-9, when people are getting ready to go on a 10AM float trip. However, we had a good time. We camped at Sam A Baker State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

We stayed in campground 1. This is one of the most beautiful parks I have ever seen. The mature trees in and around the park are amazing. The sites were each quite large. It was well-kept, the hosts were very friendly and helpful and it has great hiking and bike trails. The only downfall to this park was the shower-house. It was the worst I've ever seen. The stalls were completely covered in mold. It looked as if they hadn't been cleaned in weeks. If it wasn't for the shower house, this park would be a 10. We liked it enough that we will try again in the future and hope that the showers are in better shape. We camped at Sam A Baker State Park in a Travel Trailer.

It's a great campground in a great state park. There are numerous hiking trails and a well-stocked store near the campground. The lodge is also an excellent place to eat. We camped at Sam A Baker State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

We stayed here at the beginning of the season and practically had the whole campground to ourselves. There was a group of RVers who came in over the weekend, but we still felt we had plenty of privacy. We stayed in campground 2, but liked some of campground 1 sites. We asked if we could switch sites, but they said we wouldn't get our other reservation money back even though campground was virtually empty. Level concrete pads for RV parking. There's a nice bike path connecting the two campgrounds, a camp store with firewood, a restaurant (we didn't eat there), laundry facilities, a nature center and nature talks. Would definitely stay here again. We camped at Sam A Baker State Park in a Motorhome.
