This campground is located in the quiet countryside just below the Smithville Lake dam. Next door is the spillway, a playground, baseball, football and soccer parks. You register with the camp host who also sells ice and firewood. A full-service 30 AMP site cost $22. The roadways are all paved. Our gravel site was fairly level with a picnic table and fire-ring. There are a lot of shady sites as well as pull-thrus with a decent amount of grassy space between most sites. The restroom/shower building was fairly new and clean. Note - SFPC is a gated community. Their sign stated the gate opens at 7 am and closes at 10 pm. It's only about a mile and half drive into Smithville for groceries, restaurants, etc. Highway 169 was handy for sightseeing trips into Kansas City. It's a 4-lane direct route to downtown Kansas City and also intersects with interstates 435, 29 and 70 along the way. We camped at Smith's Fork Campground in a Motorhome.

My family and I have camped here for the past 5 years and have noticed a drastic change in the park this year. We learned that the former camp host (past 11 years) retired at the end of the 2010 season. Issues with park management. The new camp host has apparently never had a job like this. He sits in his RV unless you knock on his rig to register or want ice or wood. He is not occupying the weekday camp host site, which makes it difficult for someone coming in to register. There is a couple in the weekday host site but they work during the week and take over duties on the weekend, which works out for the weekend campers, but it’s confusing for people who come in during the week. The weekday host also has difficulty walking. We’ve seen him come out of his rig get in the host cart and drive across the street “just to get ice”. The shower house is down right nasty! There is trash on the floor and it's obvious the showers haven’t been rinsed. We questioned why there is duct tape on the dumpsters; he stated that the sanitation hauler will only take one of the two dumpsters a week. But when we complained that one was full and the other needed to be opened he said the city would have to pay for an extra haul. The new host obviously doesn’t know how to run a campground and he apparently doesn’t care! We’ve decided to find another park until issues are addressed with this one. Also on the campgrounds rules it states there is a 14 day stay limit but we’ve seen a New Vision 5th wheel in the park for over 30 days. (We returned to the park again July 31). We camped at Smith's Fork Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

We have visited this campground for years and years; many improvements have been made. Roads into and inside park are all repaved. Sites are level and most widely spaced; some shaded. Ten 50-amp sites along the south outside road are all pull throughs large enough for 40' RV plus vehicles. There are firepits and picnic tables on most sites. Restrooms are not fancy, but adequate. Short drive into town for supplies. Camp hosts friendly and knowledgeable. Popular location for locals as well as travelers. We camped at Smith's Fork Campground in a Motorhome.

This is the second time this summer we stayed at this campground. The sites on the north side were horrendous with gnats. The camp host acknowledge the bugs were extremely bad. We spent $30 for various insect deterrents in a 3-day ordeal. The campers on either side of us left (with out a refund) after two days, because of the bugs and the sewer smell. Several sites with sewer were overflowing. The camp host finally got a service truck out there the last day of the long week-end. As we were trying to remove our electrical connection from the 30 amp receptacle,we discovered the plug was welded to the receptacle. The camper across from us was camping with us and they had the same problem when disconnecting. I asked the host to verify the plug was ruined. He commented that he would look at it but they (the city of Smithville, owners) would do nothing about it. The city park department said they were not interested in making repairs to our campers, or, refund any part of the fees. We have stayed at this park several times over the years. This appears to be an ongoing problem that is not being addressed by the parks department. It is truly a shame, because it could be an enormous asset to the area campers. Additionally, the last time we stayed was in June of 07. At that time, the problem with the sewers were evident, I had to pull into another site to empty my black water, because the sewer was overflowing. The camp host at that time, said it was being repaired. We camped at Smith's Fork Campground in a Travel Trailer.

The web site and guidebooks all say "NO reservations". This is not exactly true. What the locals do is call the host and get on his list. This guarantees them a site for the time they want, just not a particular site. For a holiday weekend, the locals will arrive on Monday or Tuesday and pay for the site through the weekend even though they don't occupy the site until Friday. Call ahead to ascertain availability if you want to stay here. This is a pleasant campground with lots of grass and shade trees. Sites are packed pretty closely together and afford little privacy. Quiet hours are respected although families with kids on weekends means smoky campfires and lots of noise during the day. Numerous pull-throughs accommodate big rigs even though the roads are narrow. Sites are gravel with full hookups. Restrooms are clean but need maintenance. We camped at Smith's Fork Campground in a Travel Trailer.
