First off - don't trust your GPS to get you to the park. Ours took us to a dead end gravel road - had to back up 1/4 mile to get turned around. The park entrance is directly off of SR185. The park floods often and most sites were surrounded with silt from recent flooding. I can not imagine camping here when it is raining or if it has recently rained. There are a few sites on high ground. If you are going to camp here get a site on high ground. We camped at Meramec State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This park is quite a ways off of interstate with few directional signs, so have your navigation equipment going. Once you arrive at the park, it is another three miles to the campground on narrow roads with many tree branches, so drive carefully. We arrived on Labor Day weekend without reservations, which we knew was somewhat risky. The only sites available were "basic" without any hookups. We are used to dry camping, so we did not think that would be a problem. It was, but not because of the lack of utilities. When we headed down the loop towards our road we realized too late that the tree limbs are in dire need of trimming. We got many scrapes and were luck that the low-hanging branches did not destroy anything on the roof. The park was very crowded and the staff were totally unhelpful. The sites are close together and the whole place has a very crowded feeling. Many campfires on a low valley makes a lot of smoke. There is no cell service on Verizon and there are too many trees for satellite. One of the locals told us that the rangers had to patrol the campground and that the police frequently get called out on the weekend. We will not be staying at this park again. We camped at Meramec State Park in a Motorhome.

A nice woodsy setting close enough to the freeway for convenience but far enough to escape the noise. In a nice valley but means almost no cell service and absolutely no air TV channels. Satellite TV depends on your site. Loved finding a FHU site in a State Park but due to recent rains and low lying state of the sites, its muddy and messy. They have a great cave entrance inside the park and give daily tours. Well worth it! Then there's "the tree"! They have a badly damaged, barely alive 300 year old oak tree right beside the driveway into the park. You can't miss it! And I mean SERIOUSLY! The limbs hang only 11 feet above the road which means you must drive off-road into the mud around it to avoid damage. Be aware!! We camped at Meramec State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $21.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed at Meramec State Park on an unseasonably cool weekend in late June. Luckily we had reserved our site weeks in advance, as all the camping loops were completely full this weekend. Our site was a back-in, electric only spot. It was presumably paved but was covered in several inches of hard caked mud from the campgrounds seasonal flooding every year. Due to a malfunctioning city-water check valve, we lost all our water and had to pull out and fill up at the park. This was a problem because 1) all the spigots through the "electric only" loop were taken up by other campers illegally connecting up to them for their cheap trailers for the weekend, and 2) once we found a water supply (at the dump station about 1/4 mile away) we discovered that this park's potable water smells like the rotten egg sulphur so badly it's as if it's tapped from Satan's own butthole. Our rig reeked of it for the weekend, and still seemed tainted even after flushing the tank 2x after getting home. Many other campers seemed unimpressed with the parks "2 dog limit" rule and also enjoyed leaving them tied up outside their camp units at all hours. We were never able to get a usable connection to the park's WiFi and there was no AT&T cell service in the camping loop areas. The campground host / staff seemed to enjoy country music playing loudly in any vehicles or camp sites, however they were very much against the loud um, "urban" music coming from the car of a minority family there to enjoy the park & cave tour and were on them *instantly* They then proceeded to also ask them several questions about why they were there, if they were registered campers, etc. I wish I were making that up. Welcome to Missouri. We camped at Meramec State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There's a cave tour but we did not partake, and the hiking trails we DID try were completely deserted despite the capacity crowds. If you're into canoeing, tubing, floating, etc this is the park for you.

Overall Rating:

This is one of the most beautiful state parks in the state of Missouri. The sites are very level and some include 50 amp service with full hook ups. The space between the campers in quite ample, but the space behind your camper is huge with mature oak trees providing excellent shade. The grounds are beautifully maintained and the camp hosts are very accommodating. There is excellent access to the river from the campground and lots to do in the state park including hiking and cave exploring. The only issue we dealt with was cell service. When you are in the campground, there is NO service. However, the bath houses have a strong WiFi signal. You have to drive up the hill toward the camp store and restaurant to get any signal. Also, the sewer connection is behind your camper so be prepared with extra hose. We camped at Meramec State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Take the Fisher Cave tour in the park. It's considerably less expensive that the tour of Meramec Caverns and is led by knowledgeable park naturalists. You can also explore several caves on your own including Sheep Cave. Make sure to take flashlights. We rented canoes at the state park. The 6 mile float was perfect for us and our 5 year old grandson. Be sure to get directions to the cave you can explore from the guide. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the scenery.

This is a beautiful park along the Meramac River. However, it is a long way in off of 44 on a winding hilly 2-lane road. The park is very poorly marked--could use a few more signs. Good thing we arrived during daylight. A lot of construction on the road approaching the park. Once you find the park, it is another 3 miles into the campground. Watch for low hanging branches in the campground. We stayed in a full hookup back-in site along the river which was approaching the point where they evacuate the campground. Thankfully, it did not rise during our 2-day stay. The campground is large and has some pull-thru sites which we did not realize until we took a walk around. They warn about bears but sightings are rare. Bring a lot of bug spray--mosquitoes are thick. Free wifi worked great, but there were not many people in the park. I have a feeling that wifi wouldn't work so well if the park had more campers. We camped at Meramec State Park in a Motorhome.

Numerous restaurants along 44 at the exit for the park and the previous one. Walmart, a large truck stop, and other stores at the exit for the park. It is 5 miles from the campground to Walmart.

Site was long and good spacing between sites. All hook ups worked well. It rained so hard for the two days we were here that we didn't get out much and the park was almost empty. When exiting the park, watch out for the very large low hanging tree branch just before the check-in station. It's not a problem on the way into the campground. My husband and I loved staying at this park. So many natural delights all around us - the cave, the river and the many trails. We felt cozy and at ease. The roads are very nice, the staff are helpful and it was great to see so much wildlife in our backyard(deer, a variety of bird watching, raccoons, etc). Will stay here again! We got one of the full hookup spots on the row by the river. It wasn't riverfront, but there was only a little road and strip of trees between us and the river. Full hookup 50 amp/water/sewer all worked fine. Wi-Fi comes from the bath house, so get close to it if that's critical for you. It didn't work in spot #4. We got very spotty Verizon service since it's down in the river valley, unusable for data and we only got texts and calls when walking around the far eastern edge of the campground. It is a beautiful park, almost like golf course pretty. Lots of room between sites. It was very, very well maintained and between the well cut green grass and millions of shade trees it was a very tranquil environment. Fisher Cave is at the campground and offers guided tours. Meramec Caverns is really corny and located about 20 minutes away. We'd stay here again. We camped at Meramec State Park in a Motorhome.

Good state park. Campground is a couple of miles from park entrance. Some sites are full hook up. Some water and electric only. Camp hosts do a good job of checking up on campground. We enjoy the solitude found during the week. Sites vary from shaded to fairly open. We have had no difficulty getting satellite reception. WiFi reception is somewhat spotty, but they are working on improvements. We enjoy this campground and will return. We camped at Meramec State Park in a Motorhome.

Very family friendly park. Both weekends we were there they had huge campground activities for Halloween on the Saturday nights. Campground is easily perused from any location for keeping an eye on the kids. Only real downside is the large shedding of black walnuts that time of year - loud and can hit you in the head! But a little free added adventure I suppose! Wifi is horrible. They use the lowest available service and when campground is full - good luck... Restrooms are basic but clean and easily accessible from most spots. Trails are abundant and there's one for all skill levels. Word to the wise, area is very hilly and campground is deep into the park. Wildlife is also abundant but still relatively timid so we didn't have any problems but some great observation opportunities. We camped at Meramec State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Meramec State Park is a great place to stay. The campground is clean and the large trees give great shade. The Meramec River runs along the side of the camp grounds with easy access. It is also the site of Fisher Cave, one of the many caves in Missouri. You can take a guided tour (seasonal) of the cave for a nominal fee. We camped at Meramec State Park in a Motorhome.

The campsites were in amazing shape considering that the Meramec River had flooded recently. It has been at least 15 years since we have camped here and the trees in the campground have matured nicely so that nearly every site is shaded. As the previous reviewer stated, you cannot see the river any longer as the vegetation has grown up. But with a short walk upstream there is nice river access. In the vicinity of the campground the banks are steep and dangerous. This park is popular as it is close to St. Louis and everyone comes down to rent canoes from the on-site outfitter and "float" down the river. They take you upstream in a bus and you float back to the campground at leisure. This service is offered daily during the summer, and on the week ends during the spring and fall. There are cabins and motel rooms for rent, and a grill that we found out is only open Thurs- Sun. Fisher Cave is located at the campground, in fact its entrance is a storm shelter. It is no longer open for tours in 2013 due to the white nose syndrome that is spreading through the bat population. We'll be back, but during the week when it is less crowded. Our rate was for an electric only site and reflects a $2 disability discount. We camped at Meramec State Park in a Motorhome.

Was really disappointed when we arrived. Our campsite 112 was cover with mud and sludge.(Almost slid down when trying to hook up). Pad that table was on had standing water and wooden table was bowed and uneven. The biggest disappointment was that while we are right by the river you can't see it because of the undergrowth. Website map just shows river and campsites and doesn't even hint of trees/undergrowth between. We'll have to take our granddaughter somewhere else to swim. Very frustrating. We will not be coming back here. We camped at Meramec State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a great park. We were there on a crowded week-end and had a wonderful time. The spaces are large and roomy. The bathrooms could have been cleaner and front check in girl didn't seem to know much about the area. But the park is awesome and Fisher Cave is a must see.
