While this park isn't the prettiest place ever, you just can't beat it for the price of FREE (donations encouraged, but even then, it's a screaming deal!) There are plenty of dry camping sites for all types of campers, both pull-through and back-in, in two loops separated by a 1/2-mile gravel road. The one in the back is a bit more private, but also has the daily fishing access lot, so might be noisier. We stayed in the front lot at the very back of the loop next to the river. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. There seemed to be a few "regulars" but everyone was quiet and polite. The roads were dusty, but most everyone was very respectful about driving slowly and keeping dust to a minimum. We had originally planned this to be just an overnight, but ended up staying 3 days because it was quiet, was an easy bike ride into the cute town which had everything you could need, and was close enough to Custer National Forest for some hiking. The park borders the city golf course which looked to be nice, as well. The restrooms at the front of the park offer flush toilets and there is water available in the park. We saw the local police drive through a few times on routine checks. The city does a good job of maintaining this park despite what has to be minimal funding, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. We camped at Itch-Kep-Pe City Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Free campground, although donations are accepted. We had a pull-through which worked for us as we were just passing through and didn't want to unhook. The roads were dusty, probably because of the dry weather and not so much the fault of the campground. We would definitely stay here again on our way through, although we would pick a site not on the main campground road to avoid some of the dust from vehicles coming and going. Good little spot for a stop for the night. We camped at Itch-Kep-Pe City Park Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We were looking for a place to stop where we could get caught up on email, news, etc. after 2 hectic weeks in Teton/Yellowstone. We're self contained and don't use the facilities. We stayed on week days in mid-July in our 25 foot MH. This is a free CG run by the town (by volunteers) and we enjoyed our stay. The volunteers stopped by and were friendly. There are 2 sections to the CG. Enter via the upper CG to find sites arrayed in a large treed field. Follow a dirt road at the far end, past the golf course, and find the lower CG with sites arrayed mostly in the trees along the Yellowstone River. We stayed in the upper CG. The sites were mostly level with picnic tables, fire rings and firewood may be available for free. The sites were a mix of sun and shade. Many were quite large with some privacy. There's no wifi. There was reliable Verizon and ATT coverage that slowed temporarily in the early evening. There is a boat launch in the lower CG so there was a bit of car traffic in the early evening which stopped by 9pm and was not a problem. Trains did go through the town at night and did not keep us awake. The CG could use a little TLC, yet, it was a nice free place to stay. We camped at Itch-Kep-Pe City Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

We walked into town for groceries and visited the Museum of the Beartooths which was quite fun. Columbus is also en route to the Beartooth Scenic Byway (SR 212) which is a gorgeous drive.

Overall Rating:

Wow, we were not sure what we would find based on previous reviews. But this park and campground far exceeded our expectations. Located along the banks of the Yellowstone River and bordered by woods and a golf course on the other, this place had a COE feel to it. All sites are fairly level, some are subject to puddling after a heavy rain. Some have a stone pad to park on and others are simply gravel or dirt. There are two campground areas, an upper and lower area. You enter the upper area first, you can move freely from one to the other in any large RV, but do not go past the boat launch in the lower campground without scouting it out first. That is where you could have trouble with trees and branches. The lower campground has better river access and seemed to be more poplar with younger campers. We stayed in the upper, and some people were driving by way too fast headed for the lower campground. OTA was good with 4 stations, NBC & CBS included. Verizon cell and broadband both excellent. There is a threaded water connection available at the upper campground bathroom. We camped at Itch-Kep-Pe City Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The Beartooth Highway is less than 50 miles away. Driving to the top of the pass is a must. Elevation 10,947' with incredible views during the entire ride up and then back down. Red Lodge looked interesting, but it was late in the day by the time we came down from the pass.

Totally free and along a river. The people were nice and sites were very large and well spaced. There is water, but no dump and the bathrooms are very basic but it is definitely priced right. The campground was a bit overgrown and definitely needed some TLC, but the price was great and certainly good for a short stay. My AT&T cell coverage was very good. No wi-fi and there is a train track behind the campground and the occasional train did go by. We camped at Itch-Kep-Pe City Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

A city park that should be a model for all small towns! Over 30 sites - many pull through. They have a caretaker who will greet you shortly after arrival and provide you with an envelope to make a donation - I encourage you to do so to keep this area open.

You are welcome to stay up to 10 days. It is all non-reservable and no electric. There is water along side the bathroom building accessible by hose (you provide the hose!) It is safe and well kept. There are sites along side the river (Yellowstone River?)

Great proximity to town. The McDonalds has at least 2 tables with electric (if you need to charge things up!) There are two restaurants in town worth visiting - the 307 Bar and Grill and the Cafe. The IGA market is new and quite well stocked.

Columbus is about 40 miles west of Billings and is a far better place to stay instead of staying in Billings itself. We camped at Itch-Kep-Pe City Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Free camping. No hook ups. No frills but adequate spaces, some pull through. Was quiet, easy to find and get in and out. City worker came by with a sheet of rules and envelope for a donation if we chose. Nice of community to provide this campground, would support them if we were through here again. Free firewood available. We camped at Itch-Kep-Pe City Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

This city owned campground is free; donation requested. There are both paved, gravel, and dirt roads within the campground. We found the front half of the park the best suited for our 40'. Many low hanging limbs as you work your way farther into the park. It appears the road has been redone to the back half of the park and there are some nice sites along the river. There was some firewood provided, but it was mostly construction debris the night we stayed here. Bathrooms were simple but clean. There is a lot of traffic coming and going during the day to the boat/raft launch area. We camped at Itch-Kep-Pe City Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Very pretty park, green and shady with mature cottonwoods. A 'donation' only campground and I donated $5. Excellent Verizon signal. There were dogs roaming around in spite of the leash rule and the place was very popular for day use with a fair amount of traffic in and out. I would stay here again. We camped at Itch-Kep-Pe City Park Campground in a Motorhome.

This is a older park with No bells and whistles, but there is lots of tree's (Watch for low ones), on the river and not to far off the highway. The road is good getting into the park and signs along the way. Room for any size rig, the bathrooms are OK, not perfect, but usable for sure. We only stayed a night but you could stay longer, seems safe and the police came throw a few times. Donation's are the price for the night, can't bet that. We camped at Itch-Kep-Pe City Park Campground in a Motorhome.

This is a great donation only park. The dirt roads have been fixed and lots of shade with fire pits. There is free fire wood. It is a dry camping with fresh water access only in the rear of the campground. It has bathrooms only in the front of campground, but no fresh water access. We camped at Itch-Kep-Pe City Park Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Park is "maintained" by City of Columbus. It is in very poor condition - most sites could not be accessed due to ruts, branches, mud. A few sites are right on the Yellowstone River. A gravel mixture had been spread on the "better" sites but the stones were mixed with tar which made a mess on our shoes and the dog's feet. Park needs to be cleaned up - weeds cut, trees trimmed, etc. Fee is donation only. Just a few miles south of I-90 so OK if you just need a place to pull in and sleep. There were a total of 6 campsites occupied and the police did drive through so it seemed safe enough. We camped at Itch-Kep-Pe City Park Campground in a Motorhome.

This campground is run by the City of Columbus. Campground is free. It is adjacent to the Yellowstone River and the city’s golf course. There are two sections to the campground and we stayed in the back section. The back section has larger sites, vault toilets, a small boat ramp. Some sections of the campground roads are rutted but passable. If you camp in the back section, a 35’ is probably the maximum size. Campground is patrolled regularly by local police. We would stay again. We camped at Itch-Kep-Pe City Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.
