This was our 3rd stay at Downstream. We were lucky to get a spot even though it was midweek in June and we didn't have a reservation. It is a great value with a Senior Pass and one of the nicest parks we have used. Sites are large, and with a reservation we might have had a pullthru. Note that the cottonwood trees make quite a mess in June when they are deploying their seeds. We camped at Downstream COE in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a nice COE campground near the Dam at Fort Peck. The site was backin with electric only but was long enough for towed vehicle. The sites were spacious with grass and trees. There are walking paths. The nearby interpretive center is nice and worth a visit. We would stay again. We camped at Downstream COE in a Motorhome.

This is an excellent place to stay. We were right on the river so we had a good view. There is no water or sewer at your site. They do a have a dump station close by. Good places to play for the kiddos. So quiet and our rooftop satellite and Verizon wifi worked really well. Hard to find fuel nearby through. We will be looking for more COE Parks. We camped at Downstream COE in a Fifth Wheel.

The camp host told us about Fort Peck Summer Theater on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons so we went. It was delighful. Not many choices of eating out but we went to a hotel and it was okay. There is a great interpretive center near the dam. The dam also offers tours but we ran out of time.

Very pleased to have visited this COE park. A back in site, very spacious. Electric only, with water and sewage dump nearby. TV & Cellphone coverage was good. Adjacent to the campground is Fort Peck Dam Power Plant and Museum. Definitely worth a visit-tours given every day. It's the largest earth filled dam in the world. Dinosaur exhibit in museum (fossils found during dam construction). We camped at Downstream COE in a Motorhome.

This is a wonderful place to camp! The park was practically empty after Labor Day weekend the we were able to get a nice level pull-thru site with a view of the bass pond, in a loop that closes shortly after Labor Day. Downstream Campground and Kiwanis Park is a beautiful campground with 86 sites in 3 loops, some electric hookups, near the dam at Fort Peck Lake on the Missouri River. The dam was built in the early 1930's as a public works project. Lots of fishing (pallid sturgeon) in the lake, we heard loons, saw least tern, watched a fisherman land a huge bass, and observed deer browsing near the lake shore. Showers were clean though needed a little updating. We had power only, no water at the paved level site, concrete picnic table, fire pit (fires were discouraged). There were water spigots in each loop. We were near the group site with playground and group picnic shelter but it was really quiet during the week. We would definitely come here again. We camped at Downstream COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a paved bike/walking path around the entire park, boat launch, and we loved riding our bikes over the dam (4 miles each way). We liked it so much we came back after we were forced back east by the forest fires at Glacier National Park. Construction on the Route 117 bridge in Nashua may cause a slight delay and a maximum 10 feet wide restriction makes the crossing a bit tenuous in the motorhome.

Concrete picnic table and fire ring were towards the rear of our site and we did not use them. We arrived early and were able to choose a great spot in the nonreservable loop. We had plenty of shade although some sites were not as lucky. There are two shower houses for 3 loops; we used the one on the most distant loop since fewer campers were using it. We camped at Downstream COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Huge sites. Wonderful scenery, and great service. We stayed here for 2 days as a break form our cross country trip. Very relaxing and quite. We walked to the interpretive center. There are some very interesting displays and good information there. Well worth the walk. The 30 amp power was good, cell phone reception was OK. Another gem of a campground. We camped here in our motorhome. We camped at Downstream COE in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

I stayed here 3 nights in site 27 while passing through in a 27 foot motorhome with a tow car. Yet another lovely COE campground. There are no bad sites. Open and grassy with lots of shade trees. The sites are paved and are long and level and widely spaced and most have an open area behind them. Plenty of room for an RV, a truck, and a boat. There is a separate pull through site area at the end of the campground and also a separate tent camping area. There are several playgrounds and a day use area. My rate reflects a 50 amp site with a Senior Pass discount. I did not use the restrooms or showers. Verizon was nearly perfect. Very easy campground to maneuver around in. There are several miles of wide paved nature trails that circle and loop around the exterior of the park and along the river which are perfect for dog walking. Yes, there are LOTS of mosquitoes and some biting flies. Bring repellent. We camped at Downstream COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The interpretive center was excellent -- dinosaurs, nature exhibits, history of the construction of the dam. The power plant tour was a dud. The gravel road immediately to the left after you cross the spillway going away from the park and power plant leads to an overlook where you can stand in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark and look out across the Missouri and Milk River valleys.

I don't give any park with no water to site or sewer a 9 or 10. Even with those this would not have been a 10. I do recommend visiting this campground. I found it because AAA had the Fort Peck dam as a "gem" in their tour book. The area around this campground is a "gem" to visit. Beautiful scenic views. Very good and free tour of facility. Very very nice museum right next to camp ground. When we were here, this campground and the whole area was infested with mosquitoes. They bite during the day here. Bring OFF. Once I put on the OFF lotion the mosquitoes stayed away.

This is a very nice and spacious campground. Try and get a site with a water view. We camped at Downstream COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

For some strange reason they put water fill ups (two of them) so you block the road when filling up. So if you can come with a full tank. Put on bug repellent before going outside if you come in summer. Be sure to go up at sunset to see the views up top of the dam. Bring your best camera. Take route 24 in. Other road is under construction. For miles.

This is a beautiful park with large, long, well-spaced, clean, paved sites. Picnic tables and fire pit are on concrete. Lots of large trees and grass. The staff has been very nice and helpful. We originally planned on two nights but added a night because it's such a relaxing place. The Fort Peck Dam interpretive center is nearby and very interesting. It's a cooperative effort between the Army Corp and Fish and Wildlife because it's also part of the Charles Russell NWR. Very nice, paved nature trail around the park. The road coming from the east (Hwy. 117) is under construction so be patient. $10/night is Senior Pass rate. We camped at Downstream COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Wanted to see Fort Peck Dam and didn't even know this park was here. Looked like a nice park. After going to the dam and refuge visitor center we decided to stay as it as getting late to travel very far. This was a very nicely maintained park, with some pull thru's. Tips for other Campers:

Visitor center at dam was extensive. Only got to spend about an hour there but could have spent 2 or 3 going through nature exhibits and wildlife displays.

Fantastic restaurant at West end of Dam, with inside and outside seating. Did not fish, but that seems to be the main attraction for this campground.

Very nice COE campground with electric hookup, picnic table, and fire ring. My site was a back in that was plenty long next to a large shade tree. There are lots of large trees here. Grounds are well maintained. Campground host was nice and sold firewood. There are several ponds and a nature trail, one pond is supposed to be stocked with Bass. Very quiet and peaceful place to stay when crossing the east half of Montana. We camped at Downstream Campground COE in a Fifth Wheel. We camped at Downstream COE in a Fifth Wheel.

They give free tours of the hydroelectric powerhouse nearby. There is an interpretive center connected to the park by a trail that has large glass aquariums with some large speciments of the fish found in the resevoir and river. There is a restaurant and bar on the lake if you take the road that goes over the dam to the Fort Peck side.
