I gave this campground an 8 for a few reason: Pros-#1--close to the St. Mary's visitor's center and the shuttle service #2-beautiful scenery and a chance to see wildlife #3 we had cell phone reception at this campground, because the campground was close to the town of St. Mary's #4-within walking distance to St. Mary's, in case you needed anything #5-very clean campground with friendly rangers Cons- only have two showers for all three loops of St. Mary's??? We had an rv, but there were a lot of campers, who needed to shower. And, about the park in general-again, too many people for the shuttle service. The schedule says shuttles run every thirty minutes-they don't. BUT, if you try to drive, well, the parking lots often fill up, and then, they are closed, so people can't get into the section of the park they want. And, without a car, it is virtually impossible to get to Many Glaciers. Now, don't get me wrong- a great park to visit, with gorgeous scenery. Very helpful rangers and very clean parks. We camped at St. Mary Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Stayed at St. Mary's the last week of September, very close to the closing of the park for the season. Only one loop was open for use.. all primitive. No power, no water, no sewer. Hopefully your house batteries are up to the task before staying here! Ours barely made it through the night.. whoops! As little activity there was going on, I was surprised that it eventually did fill up that night. Sites in our loop were all pull-through and of varying level-ness. Many are pretty tight and you would not make it in a bigger rig. We're 21' and a few inches long, and about 10'5" high and even then a few of the sites would not have worked due to tree growth. Someone WAS running a generator, but could not hear it from our site. Paid at the info pavilion where envelopes you drop into a steel tube are provided. A ranger made rounds about at dusk checking in on everyone. Very dark at night but stargazing was obstructed by smoke from the Sprague fire that year. Still managed to capture some faint Aurora Borealis on my time-lapse GoPro though. We camped at St. Mary Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Lucky to get an opening because tent campers are no longer allowed due to bear activity. Nice setting close to the entrance of the park. Unlevel sites but good privacy. Generators are confined to one loop so others can go without the noise and fumes. We liked that policy and the quietness. We'll be back. We camped at St. Mary Campground (NPS Campground) in a Truck Camper.

August 18,19 St. Mary Campground, St. Mary, Glacier National Park, East entrance, no hookups, reservations, showers, bathhouse, dump station, 156 sites, $14 with Golden Age Pass, Site 155 This is the largest campground just to the right when you enter the east side of Glacier National Park and is open all year with reservations during the summer months. There are three loops A, B, C. We were in Loop C near the showers and interpretive night programs. There is a half mile trail that leads back to the Visitor Center where information, films, exhibits and the shuttles for the Going To The Sun Road leave. Some sites have Aspen Trees for shade while others are open to the sun. Loop A is generator free but the road through it is rocky. There are views of the mountains from most sites. The town of St. Mary's is just past the entrance to the park with a lodge, restaurants, shopping, gift shop, and gas . St. Mary's Lake is not far from the campground but the views driving up to Logan Pass are stunning. You pass mountains, lakes, waterfalls, Rising Sun area and a number of pullouts for hiking and picnicking. Good stop! We camped at St. Mary Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Great proximity to good hiking trails on the east side of the park. Fresh water and dump station are available. Showers are free. Currently a ban on camp fires or charcoal grills, propane is fine. The park is heavily utilized and I recommend the free park shuttle as parking fills up very early. We camped at St. Mary Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

A nice NPS campground, no hook ups but that is the norm. Potable water and dump station on site. Showers are located in C loop. Sites are small I saw a couple of 32 footers in here. Fire ban in effect. No charcoal grills either. Good Verizon wireless connection. We camped at St. Mary Campground (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

St Mary Campground is just beyond the St Mary visitors center on the east end of Going to the Sun road. There are 3 loops. Loop C has 4 private unisex hot showers which are spacious and push button. (One was closed during our stay and the water will be shut off September 19th). Showerheads are at a good height, even for folks over 6'! The pull through sites vary GREATLY in levelness so choose carefully. Generation hours are 8 am to 10 am, a midday time and 5 pm to 7 pm. (We were out exploring midday so didn't pay attention to the time). Most of the sites are right by the loop road and many campers head out near sunrise. This is a VERY busy campground and fills up most weekends. The website provides good information on what time the campgrounds fill up. Loop C is very open, Loop A and B are much shadier. We camped at St. Mary Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There are several easy hikes at Two Medicine lake where it's less crowded. Several ranger talks at the campground. Laundry at Johnston campground, just outside the park was $2.00 for wash and $1.75 for dry. Be sure to stop for Pie at Two Sisters restaurant north of the park entrance on 89. Yum!

This was dry camping and since we were in a motor home it was no problem. The showers and restroom were very clean. The campground was smoke filled because of all the fires. It rained and snowed our last nig ht. What a beautiful view of the mountains when we woke up. To bad we had to leave. We camped at St. Mary Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Wonderful campground - just wish they had electric hookups. Most campsites are surrounded by bushes and small trees so there is quite a bit of privacy between sites. All campsites are pull-thrus so if you are in an RV and want your patio door to face your site rather than the road then choose a site on the outside of the loop. Berries were ripe while we were there so there were bears coming into the campground. Nice location for day trips to Many Glacier and Two Medicine. Verizon phone and Mifi worked well. We camped at St. Mary Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

The campground is in the aspens so no overhead shade but the sites are pull throughs at least in loop B. There are three loops, A, B, C with A being in more dense aspens and C more open. The only showers were in loop C.
Sites are level and spread out with privacy at least in loop A and B. Entrance rangers were very friendly and helpful. They even answered the phone when we asked if our 48 ft rig would fit in our site, B80. It did. We camped at St. Mary Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

I would give this a 10 except they do not have any hookups. That being said, we really enjoyed our stay in this campground. We had good voice and MiFi data connections with our Verizon account, don't know about the other carriers. I do have a problem with two things. One is tenters occupying the oversize sites meant for RVs and the other is the generator hours are so restrictive. I wish they would begin at 7:00 AM for 2 hours. It was awful having to wait until 8:15 for a hot cup of coffee. And most folks are not in their rigs for the lunch time period so the afternoon should be longer, maybe 5 to 8 so that we can use our appliances to prepare dinner. National parks just haven't kept up with the RVing lifestyle! We camped at St. Mary Campground (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

St Mary's is the only good NPS choice to make on the East Side if you have a big rig. The other NPS campgrounds will accommodate tents, pop-ups, and small trailers, but if you have something over 25 feet, St. Mary's is your only choice. This is dry camping only, no hookups. Larger rigs should go straight to loop C. It has the largest spots, all are pull-throughs. The first spots 101 to about 109, are the most level. Grab any of them if available when first enter the loop. 106 was great for us, with a wonderful view, satellite signal (Dish), and open for our solar panels. Other sites have shade. The sites farther into the loop are on the hill and require more effort to level. No AT&T signal but strong Verizon wireless including 4G. If you can dry camp, the rate is about 1/3 of a local RV park. We would definitely return. No generators in loop A and gen times are restricted in loops B & C. We camped at St. Mary Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: July, 2014 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

This was an adequate campground. The roads are paved and the sites are gravel and dirt. There are no utilities. No internet or cell signal of any kind. No internet available at the St. Mary visitor center either. The staff at the entrance booth were pleasant and efficient. Much of the campground is covered with 8-12 ft tall trees. They don’t provide shade but in some cases do provide privacy between sites. All sites are pull-outs, usually with some plants between the site and the campgroud road. This provide some privacy from the road, but do require that your rig can make the turn into the pull-out. There are some sites that don’t have this plant growth, which would be useful if you have a long rig that would have difficulty making the turn (such as a 40’ motorhome or trailer). If you’re tent camping not many of the sites have a place to pitch your tent, so people end up pitching them in part of the site driveway. All three loops (A,B,C) are driven counter-clockwise and are long enough and narrow enough that you don’t want to drive them backwards. This means that if you have a trailer or motorhome and you select a site on the left side of the road, then your door will be facing the road – not the picnic table. Ants…. All over the ground, at least at our site (B88), but didn’t seem to bother our legs Here are how the sites stack up in terms of privacy (trees) and openness (no privacy from your neighbor):A1-4: open, A5-8: trees, A40-45: trees, (the rest of A loop was closed by flood damage while we were there). B51-56: open, B57-68: trees, B69-B71:open, B73-91: trees, B92-100. C101: trees, C102-108: open, C109-117: trees, C118-123: open, C124-132: trees, C133-C152: open, C153-the end: trees For big rigs, here are the sites that don’t have trees between the site and the campground road: B52, B69-71, B94, B97, B100, C102, C107, C108, C118, C117, C121, C134, C135, C137, C138, C141, C142, C143, C144-C150 , C152 We initially had trouble understanding the free park shuttle system, so here’s some information that might help. The road between Logan Pass and Avalance Lake (west side) is very narrow and restricted to vehicles 21’ or less in length. The park runs full-size bus shuttles from the east entrance (St Mary’s) to Logan Pass, and from the west entrance to Avalance Lake. For the stretch between Avalance Lake and Logan Pass, only smaller 12-passenger Sprinter type vans are used. The vans appear to run entrance-to-entrance, not just this restricted stretch. So … if you get on a full size bus heading to the interior of the park (from either the east or west entrances), you’ll have to exit at either Avalance Lake (east bound) or Logans Pass (west bound), and wait for a van to pick you up. If you get in a van headed the direction you want to go, then you should be able to stay on it to your final destination. We found the bus frequency frustrating – there would be several in a row, then a long gap with no busses (and, of course, the first bus after that gap would be packed to the gills). The park said this was caused by construction delays on the east side of Going-to-the-sun road, but 11 of us got up early to take the first bus of the day from St. Marys scheduled for 7AM, which didn’t appear until 7:20 (and didn’t come through the construction) so the construction excuse doesn’t explain everything. We camped at St. Mary Campground (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.
