Great place to stay and enjoy fishing and the sandhills of Nebraska. Sites 40-44 in the center can get 3-6 inches of water during hard rains. We camped at Calamus State Rec Area / Homestead Knolls Campground in a Travel Trailer.
This is a nice campground. Most of the sites had shrubs separating them from the next one. We saw a lot of wildlife. We were disappointed because the water was so high there was no beach to swim at but I'm sure it would be lower later in the summer. We cut our visit short but would visit again. Homestead Knolls is a campground within the Calamus State Rec area near Burwell, NE. The campsites are hard-surfaced with lots of room. This is a newly developed campground, but there are a few shady spots or partially shaded. No water or sewer hookups are available, but water can be obtained at various hydrants throughout the campground. Fire pits and picnic tables are available at each site. The campground has modern showers and toilets for those who need them. The only thing that doesn't make this a 10 is the lack of waterfront campsites and the distance to the beach is a bit far for those who may experience ambulatory problems. The lake is beautiful but you can't really see it from this campground. It could have been designed a lot better in this writer's opinion.
