National Forest Campground with electric only. Self check-in at kiosk at entrance. Campground and picnic area were nice and well maintained. Some sites not level, but level sites were available. We were just looking for campsite with electricity on a hot August night. Amazed to run into a forest in the middle of Nebraska. Shower house looked clean but we did not use it. Lots of campers with ATVs, but the campsite was quiet on a weekday night. Hard to beat the price. We camped at Nebraska National Forest (Bessey recreation area) in a Motorhome.

You just can't beat a shaded, gravel, 30A electric site with no visible neighbors, a potable water faucet (threaded!) within hose distance, and a sanitary dump for $5.50/night with a Federal Senior Pass! If this campground were in Durango or Aspen, Colorado, the U.S. Forest Service would charge $30-40/night and it would be full every night. So there's a little train noise--we use ear plugs and a small electric fan to take care of that problem. We camped at Nebraska National Forest (Bessey recreation area) in a Fifth Wheel.

So, it's near a railroad, but it's not noisy. The sites are private, lots of big, mature trees, well marked paths, clean bathrooms, with showers. I camped right on the river, so there were some frogs talking. The neighbors had four wheelers as did other denizens of the park, but they were very quite after dark, so no worries there. I had a great stay and will return. We camped at Nebraska National Forest (Bessey recreation area) in a Tent Trailer.

This Forest Service campground offers senior pass discounts, so our rate was $5.50 a night with a $9 "transaction fee" for a reservation. This campground is a mecca for 4 wheelers, so be prepared for a constant din of 4 wheelers zooming through the campground. The sites are highly variable, with some not at all suitable for motorhomes, but others paved and level. Electricity is available at some sites, and some sites are held for reservations while others are first come, first serve. The toilets and showers were clean and enjoyable, as one had a toilet and shower to oneself. There are about 50 BNSF trains that come by the park each day, long coal trains eastbound and empties westbound. Train fans will be happy to be so close to the trains, but others may be put off by the train horns as it crosses the park road day and night. Sites are dry camping or electric only, with a dump station and water loading station available. We enjoyed our stay for a couple of nights and would camp here again when in the area. We camped at Nebraska National Forest (Bessey recreation area) in a Motorhome.

Aside from the trains, this is one of the nicest campgrounds we have stayed at in eight years of full-timing. Our site (#29) was the closest one to the river, and the tracks are on the other side of the river. We were about as close to the tracks as you could get, and trains went by every hour or so all day and all night. They didn't bother us much, but I can see where it would ruin the site for others. Two of the three loops are navigable by big rigs, and there are many sites where we could fit. The two loops away from the river are probably pretty well isolated from train noise. The loop near the group campground was too tight for us to drive the coach into it. 22 of the 34 sites have power, mostly 30 amp, with a few have 50 amp. We got a huge 50 amp asphalt site, shaded by pines and junipers. Two nearby 50 amp sites were cement. Most sites are gravel. Central dump and water, but the water was still off for the winter during our stay. There was no sign of any problems with water quality. The sites are mostly in tall pine trees. Great campground. We camped at Nebraska National Forest (Bessey recreation area) in a Motorhome.

This campground is managed by the National Forest Service and is in poor shape. It was probably a beautiful facility years ago but has had very little maintenance for a long time. The roads are rutted and a lot of the sites have erosion problems. The water is tagged as non-potable due to some type mineral contamination. The restrooms and showers were acceptable. Also near a railroad which has a coal train about every 30 minutes throughout most of the night. I would pass on this one in the future if at all possible. We camped at Nebraska National Forest (Bessey recreation area) in a Truck Camper.
