Overall Rating:

A dry camp high above Walker Lake far from the road noise and a VERY relaxing, refreshing stop after spending time in Las Vegas. You might have to look a bit for a level site but it's worth it. Many of the campers were experienced dry campers with solar panels - we only stayed 2 nights and the weather didn't require heavy battery usage. This stop was intended to be a short transit stop with walks. Do go down to the lower level to camp and watch for the signs that show how much the lake level has dropped (almost 200 feet) due to agricultural use up stream. We did have excellent Verizon signal and the sky was reasonably dark enough to make out a faint Milky Way. We camped at Walker Lake - Sportsman's Beach Recreation Site in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

For a BLM campground it is a little run down, in need of a face lift but for the money it was a real bargain. The views are spectacular from all sites. The steep hill coming down was a little unnerving at first and the gravel road through the campground was disappointing but again the price is right. Great Verizon signal, long pull-through sites that were quite level for our 40' rig, nice Safeway in Hawthorne and a free dump station at the Shell station. No water or dump so come prepared. We camped at Walker Lake - Sportsman's Beach Recreation Site in a Motorhome.

I love this campground! Sites are large & fairly level gravel, each with a ramada, table and grill and all overlooking Walker Lake. There was hardly anyone else here during my stay, so it was quiet. No hookups but there are toilets, which I didn't use. No water, garbage or dump. Only 15 miles from Hawthorne. Good Verizon 4G. We camped at Walker Lake - Sportsman's Beach Recreation Site in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $6.00
Overall Rating:

$6.00 is for developed pull-thru sites with a picnic shelter and fire pit. These sites are all pull-thru and every single one gets an outstanding view of the lake. Make sure to follow the signs down to the boat ramp, and turn left - this is where the pay station is. Keep driving past onto gravel road and keep left at the fork and this is where you'll find the developed pull-thrus. All other sites are $4.00 back at the top where I call the picnic area. If staying 1 week, 7th night is free. You're paying on an honor system - no camp host and never saw a park ranger drive through, but we still found our check cashed quickly. No reservations, just first-come first serve. Sites aren't even numbered - we stayed at the last pull-thru at the very end before it loops back around and never had any neighbors in the 10 days there. Verizon LTE data coverage was excellent, which is a must for us to work online. Temperatures in early July remained in the 80's during day, 40-50's at night, very comfortable. Once a day, there is a storm that passes and winds kick up fast during that brief moment, though one night it was so violent we had to move our rig to a spot protected from the wind for the night. No dump or water, must come with full/empty tanks, and prepared for boondocking. The night time skies were the best I've ever seen, and I'm saying that after coming from the Grand Canyon. You could see the Milky Way like a bright ribbon in the sky. One thing to watch out for at night though are solifugaes ("camel spiders"), pretty aggressive creepy crawlies that are attracted to crawling onto your foot (keep flashlight beams away from feet). We camped at Walker Lake - Sportsman's Beach Recreation Site in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Hawthorne 10 miles away has a Safeway grocery store (normal affordable prices!), gas stations, casino in town has a free dump (not sure about water), and laundromat. There is the Whiskey Flats RV Park with laundry room too, and you can pay $5/person for a shower. We ended up using the lake ourselves, but the water is a bit salty and leaves that gritty feeling in your hair.

Overall Rating:

Dry camping on BLM land, lake view, pit toilets & covered patio/picnic area on site. Sites gravel and somewhat level, some need a little maneuvering to get near level. Lake is slowly dying, heavy mineral content with increasing drought levels have killed the fishing. We camped at Walker Lake - Sportsman's Beach Recreation Site in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: March, 2013 - $3.00
Overall Rating:

This is a BLM campground along the shores of Walker Lake just north of the town of Hawthorne. Not much to offer here. No potable water and no hook-ups of any sort. No flush toilets and no showers. The women's outhouse was disgustingly dirty. The pads are broken asphalt and gravel. Nice views of the lake and easy access off the highway, other than that and the very inexpensive fees, there's not much to write home about. Looks like the sort of place that would be popular with the local crowd in the summer for fishing, boating, jet-skiing, etc. Our cost reflects the fact that this is a Federal campground and we have the Senior Access pass. Regular fee would be $6. We camped at Walker Lake - Sportsman's Beach Recreation Site in a Travel Trailer.
