I picked this campground because I am a history bluff who grew up on western movies, and it was a hot day and I needed shade for my tent. It met these needs. Loved seeing the ruins of the old fort. The shade was great but the small black flies were not. The good news was they did not bite. This is not the state park's fault. Summer time near a river you get bugs. Had I been in my travel trailer it wouldn't have been a big deal, but for tenters it is a royal pain. The campground needs work. The pit toilets were clean but smelled like a privy. Most parks have gone to the composting toilets which have almost no smell. The campsites were dirt--there were traces of gravel from very long ago. There were train tracks near by but I never saw or heard a train. There were only 5 campers including the host. The sites were easy to get into and there were some big rig, pull thru sites. This could be a great campground with gravel sites and composting toilets but it hasn't seen any upgrades in many years. I probably would not camp here again. We camped at Samuel Buckland State Park in a Tent.

Date of Stay: August, 2015 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

About the only good thing I can say is that the huge, majestic cottonwood trees all through out the campground make for a pleasant late afternoon, even in August. Small, wooden bridge across a dry creek just before entering the campground made me think more that twice before crossing it. Gravel/dirt pathways throughout campground are mostly being reclaimed by bordering trees and brush. Don't even open the door on the pit toilets! They appeared not to have been cleaned in quite a while. There was only one other camper in the entire facility so I assume the 5 or 6 state park vehicles I saw at the entrance (Ft. Churchill state historical park) must concentrate on that aspect or the facility. Water spigots interspersed throughout but did not use. With a bit of effort on the part of the parks department, this could be a real gem in the middle of the blazing desert (even with pit toilets!). Would not stay here again unless I hear that they've made some efforts at clean up or if I was stuck for a night. We camped at Samuel Buckland State Park in a Motorhome.

Nothing around but the Carson River (mostly dry this time of year) and the Ft Churchill ruins.

The Sam Buckland Campground is park the the Nevada State Parks system. It is part of Fort Churchill State Park. The sites are tucked away in a grove of trees below the old fort. There are pull throughs and back in sites. There is a dump station at the camp ground entrance and there are a few places around the camp to get fresh water. Most sites are very well shaded. The Carson River is nearby and makes for some nice nature walks. The rail road line nearby is rarely used. This is an excellent place for history fans as Fort Churchill is part of the Pony Express Trail. I camp here often as this is one of my favorite places to get away and relax. We camped at Samuel Buckland State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The Carson River is close by and you may need insect repellent occasionally depending on the time of year. The Park Ranger Station at the fort sells passes for the Nevada State Park system. The counterpart to this area is Lahontan State Recreaction Area (about 10 miles north).

Sam Buckland Nevada SP is just West off Alt 50 South of Fernley & Silver Springs. Big Rigs (we are 40' + jeep dinghy) can access more than 6 pull throughs and it is shady under the cottonwood trees. They, however, do NOT accept Sr Passes so rate is $17; no electric, no water at sites, but water isn't far from any site. There are very few campers here, it seems to be a well-kept secret with pit toilets. We will stay here again should we be in the area; midsummer may be less comfortable if its hot. My Verizon internet and cell phone (surprisingly) work just fine. One word of caution if traveling Southbound; the sign is a short way from the entrance road and at the peak of a hill...we missed it because of an 18-wheeler on our tail we didn't dare brake too hard. There is a 'turn around' at the bottom of the hill so we know others have had the same problem. We camped at Samuel Buckland State Park in a Motorhome.
