Our Appaloosa campground site was an end pull-out, not pull-through, so we had no neighbors behind us and none even close except in front of our truck and trailer. Evergreen trees acted as a windbreak, which was handy since it was very windy at times. The campground sits on a bluff overlooking the lake, so wind is common. But it is an inexpensive way to spend a few nights with hookups while snowbirding or traveling on I-25. New Mexico State Park campgrounds are our favorites of any of the states west of the Mississippi River. We camped at Caballo Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Great park over all. We camped in the downriver campground. Very quiet. Close to Truth or Consequences for Walmart. Park ranger presence is visible daily. Camp host in each campground to check you in in you have a reservation. Would definitely stay here again. We camped at Caballo Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

A campground with trees and grass in this area is a rare thing! Nice size sites some with FH and can be reserved. Gets busy on certain weekends, but has a group area with w/e for overflow. Part of the problem is that there are a number of permanent residents (2 weeks here, 2 weeks at Percha) that take up the better sites. The state should do something about this. We camped at Caballo Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Super nice state park. Clean, well-kept, new trees planted. Sites are large and nicely spaced. Some sites are considerably longer than others, but we still were able to leave our tow car connected to a 38' Class A and didn't have to unhitch.
Nice lake and mountain views, and very relaxing. We camped at Caballo Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

A really great place for a one night stop over and possibly longer if the park is not crowded. Easy pull through sites and relatively clean throughout. We camped at Caballo Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is a ruggedly beautiful park with views of the lake below and mountains above. We stayed in the Palamino area which is full hook up, in a site overlooking the lake. The view of the sunset was spectacular from our campsite. There were only 3 out of the 7 sites occupied so had no trouble maneuvering our motorhome in and out of the site but if the area is full, you may have to unhook your tow vehicle to make the turn to get out. We glanced at the other two camp "circles" in this park and all campsites appear to have their own covered cabana that has stone half walls, a picnic table and roof to keep the sun out. Very nice touch. There is also swimming and fishing available down at the piers and beach below the campsites. We would definitely come here again for a longer stay. We camped at Caballo Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

This area has a lot to offer from swimming, hiking, fishing, bird watching. Nearby Hatch has local dining options as well as "all things pepper related" for sale - very unique.

We made reservations here based on good reviews from other campers. When we arrived, we were surprised to find that our spot was basically the size of a two-car driveway, backing to a field of weeds and having a view and noise of the freeway (I-25). All RV spots are out in the open--no privacy between spots. We also noticed and heard large groups setting up tents in the non-camping area. We decided to leave and head to another campground. We were unable to get a refund as we had already checked in for the night. I would only recommend if you need a very quick overnight stop. We camped at Caballo Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed one night but would go back and stay more if we had the time. Some of the spaces were overlooking the lake (high above). It was raining when we were there, but would be very hot in summer sun. The roads in each camping area are dirt but in good condition, wide, and without overhanging trees; the main road within the park is paved. We camped at Caballo Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Truth or Consequences is the nearest city; it has a Walmart, numerous restaurants, stores and gas stations. Many people go there to use the hot springs.

Site close to home. Opened up the season with a quick weekend stay. A few other rigs there and place was quiet and clean. No nonsense site with few other amenities. Area was well kept by park staff. A bit more dust and wind than we cared for, but that's the Desert Southwest. We camped at Caballo Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: August, 2012 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

The time of year and the campground selected can make a big difference in the perception of this State Park. This rating is for the main campground, which is situated above the lake and has three separate loops. Two of the loops are entirely reservation sites and none of the sites have 50 Amp. They are 30 Amp and there are no shade trees. Each has a solid ramada with a concrete pad and grill. Interior roads and sites are dusty gravel. Most of the sites are pull-through. Those in the Stallion Loop are the most spacious and not parallel to the interior road. Access to the lake is via the boat ramp road and the lake level is very low. The boating and weekend crowd on a Friday in August is missing in action. Perhaps because of the low water levels. Verizon has a strong signal here and so does the 3G aspect. We will likely return here. We camped at Caballo Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Nice, quiet park. It has pull throughs and some back ins. A few FHU's. One would never know the place was there; just a few hundred yards from I-25 We camped at Caballo Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This review is for the Lakeside campground. This campground is just below the Caballo Dam on the Rio Grande River. This park is not as nice as our last park, South Monticello campground at Elephant Butte State Park. It is an older park and is not well maintained. The interior roads and individual sites need a new layer of gravel. Most sites are pull throughs. Each site has a grill/fire pit, water, 30 & 20 amp power, and a concrete pad that contains a picnic table covered with a shelter. The nearest civilization is Truth or Consequences. Cows are allowed to graze in the campground. There were about a dozen or more when we were here. This isn’t necessarily a bad idea except there are cow patties everywhere, even in the children’s playground. And these things attract a lot of flies. And I wonder if a cow would attack a curious child. We camped at Caballo Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.
