WOW! This campground is one of the BEST we have ever stayed in! The views are spectacular, you can swim or fish in the lake, which is a short walk from any campsite. The site we had was Full Hookup, they are ````Limited but well worth it! Showers and bathrooms were clean and very well maintained! It was a few miles off the main roads but so worth it for the incredible sunrise and sunsets! Each camp site had its own covered picnic table. This campground is one of the best! We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

A very nice State Park with great rates to stay in when visiting Carlsbad Caverns and other area attractions. I would stay here again. The only downside is no sewer hook ups. However, the dump station was good and they had pressured water to flush your black tank. I brought my portable tank to take the black/grey water so would not have to move the trailer but it was way too far to the dump station (about .60 miles) to use. Also it was super windy when we were there. Nice trails to the lake. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

The most outstanding quality of this CG is the price ($18) and it's quiet. It's at least 20 min to Carlsbad to get food/fuel/ice/etc and about 1.3 hours to Carlsbad Caverns NP. The SP has a nice lake that appears to support boating and fishing and there is a stream on the access road where we always saw people swimming, fishing and floating around in tubes, as well as a little playground and a gravel walking path to the lake. A few of the RV sites have a tree or 2 so some sites get some shade at different times of day. The humidity is low and it's hot in June with an almost constant breeze, if not wind. Electric was good (we didn't hook up to the water) and spacing was fair. They have a nice metal picnic table anchored to a concrete patio with a steel awning over it and a stone parapet on one side. VzW signal is excellent at 5 bars 4G, but there is no WiFi here. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

Lovely state park located 12 miles north of Carlsbad. We were in site 16, a fairly level W/E (no sewer) site which had nice views of the lake (and probably the nicest site if you are in a big rig). Sites are all asphalt and a bit narrow, and the interior roads are good. There are only 3 full hook-up sites. One half of the campground is reservable (sites 1-28) and the other is FCFS (sites 29-51). All sites are back-in, with a covered patio, picnic table and grill, and vary widely in length so chose carefully. Sites will most likely need a leveling block or two as they all appear to have a front to back slope. Good signage to the park. As another reviewer stated, watch your tires coming in through the gate as it's easy to scrape them on the curb. We were able to pick up a dozen or so OTA channels and Verizon service was very good. No laundry facilities here. Nice walking trails, but rocky terrain so take care. Wildlife is prevalent with lots of rabbits, roadrunners and quail. Bathrooms were large with 4 showers and 4 toilets separated by a sink area. Toilets are the prison type; cold steel with no lid. Showers are push button (which literally only lasts one minute) and come out as a fine mist. They are in need of a deep cleaning, as there was a plant growing in one of them. Although there was a hand soap dispenser, it was empty during our 4 day stay. Park has a double dump station surrounded by curbs, but we didn't use it, since it appeared too challenging for our 40' fifth wheel (there is an ill placed dumpster that can prevent you from swinging wide enough to miss scraping your tires on the curb). The park also has a boat ramp and nice covered playground for the kids. The only time we saw a ranger was the day we were leaving, and the visitor's center/check-in was closed all weekend. It was very windy while we were there! However, we enjoyed this park and would definitely return. Rate was $14 per night with a $12 reservation fee. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Carlsbad Caverns is a must see, but the elevators are currently closed for repairs so you will have to hike in and out which is very strenuous. You may want to check their website or call ahead to determine if the repairs are complete before going. The caverns are about an hour drive from the campground. The nearest Walmart is about 20 minutes away.

Park is about 40 miles from caverns and 15 miles from town. The caverns were great. The town does not have much, but does have a nice river walk with a small boat ride ($10) up the river. The town is ok. The camp ground is nice but old. The entrance is somewhat tight for large rv's. watch your left rear tires at the curb. Great views from the site, one problem, they have not emptied the dumpsters in forever, trash was flowing over everywhere. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Nice State Park campground. 1/2 the sites are reserved and 1/2 are first come first served. If you only stay one night they'll let you stay in the reserved section if space is available. We did that. Need an overnight on our way through. Had a 30 amp site for $14. 50amp sites were $18. No sewer. Roads are easy to navigate in a big rig. Verizon signal was good. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Nice quiet park. Half is fcfs and the other half is by reservation. We fcfs and were lucky to get a site. Their reserve system charges you $10. You can stay in a reserve site for one night I it is not reserved that night. But you have move the next day. You can only stay in the reserve section without a reservation one night at a time. You can pay at the park for the reserve section. The reserve section had openings. Our site had its own trash can. It was full when we arrived. That is 35 gallons of trash without someone checking. Someone was not doing their job. The tables are covered. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is overall a very nice state park. It appears that about half of the sites are available under reservation system and half are on a first come/first serve basis. We did not have a reservation when we arrived on a Monday afternoon at about 3:30pm and were able to get a site near the restrooms. Speaking of restrooms-my only complaint about this campground is this area. Toilets are of the "prison type" as my husband calls them-stainless steel toilet bowl without a seat. The showers are push button style with little pressure, little spray and not much warm water. Our site (#50) was adequate for 26 ft motorhome with enough room in front for our tow vehicle. We were able to get level with little effort and enjoyed the fact that there is some space between sites. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Great value for water and electric. Dump station only half mile away. Lake views but camp is not at lake edge. Saw Park Rangers and Campground hosts every day but still rubbish wasnt't always cleared away if left by other campers. Some walking trails and 2km road to park gate is safe for bike riding - little traffic. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

The Park Rangers were nowhere to be seen almost the entire five days we were camping at the park. The toilets were clogged so that only one was usable in the ladies room and the men's room was not clean. The showers barely work - just a mist. The lake is a long way from the campground. The site is gravel and fairly level. There was a long snake on the path that led to the restroom so watch out when walking at night. We had water and electric which worked fine, and there is a dump station on the way out of the park. This park is 13 miles north of Carlsbad and even further from the caverns. I would not stay here again, and I like NM parks. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is just a lovely desert state park. We couldn't ask for a better rest spot with beautiful sunsets over the lake in what seems to be a newer campground. It also has a great playground as well. We'd have rated it a perfect 10, but we never saw a ranger. Site 19 was ours and I think it may be the best in the park -- unobstructed water view, a bit of shade and great privacy for the desert. $14 is a steal for this park. Great park with great views. Roads are paved sites are gravel. Site 25 is a former park host site and the only site available with sewer hookup. Our site (site2) said max 35' RV length on the reservation site but we easily got our 40' coach on the site and could have got a 45' coach on the site. Quiet and beautiful sunsets. Tips for other Campers:

If you're up for a challenging hike do the Dog Canyon hike. Round trip was 12 miles from our campsite and back and took us 9 hours. Steep and strenuous at times. Be sure to visit White Sands National Monument. On Saturdays and Sundays the park manager gives guided tours of Oliver Lee's ranch house that has been restored. Very interesting tour.

This is a beautiful spot to spend some time....although it's 35 miles from the Caverns, we prefer the state park setting compared to the resort style...the sites are fairly level and it's big rig friendly....the services worked good although we did lose electric one night for about an hour, around 4 in the morning....there are only 3 sites with sewer but they have a dump station...the sites have good spacing between them which is nice since there are no large trees to help seclude you....the restrooms were clean but the push button showers are a pain but tolerable....a lot of wildlife around the campground.....we would stay here again....beautiful sunsets and views of the lake.....all the picnic tables are on a covered patio which is nice.....beware of the wind and your awning, we never put ours out .........
