The Park Rangers were nowhere to be seen almost the entire five days we were camping at the park. The toilets were clogged so that only one was usable in the ladies room and the men's room was not clean. The showers barely work - just a mist. The lake is a long way from the campground. The site is gravel and fairly level. There was a long snake on the path that led to the restroom so watch out when walking at night. We had water and electric which worked fine, and there is a dump station on the way out of the park. This park is 13 miles north of Carlsbad and even further from the caverns. I would not stay here again, and I like NM parks. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Living Desert State Park, about 10 miles south towards Carlsbad. Nice park along the Pecos River with plenty of shaded picnic areas and playgrounds for kids.

This is just a lovely desert state park. We couldn't ask for a better rest spot with beautiful sunsets over the lake in what seems to be a newer campground. It also has a great playground as well. We'd have rated it a perfect 10, but we never saw a ranger. Site 19 was ours and I think it may be the best in the park -- unobstructed water view, a bit of shade and great privacy for the desert. $14 is a steal for this park. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is a beautiful spot to spend some time....although it's 35 miles from the Caverns, we prefer the state park setting compared to the resort style...the sites are fairly level and it's big rig friendly....the services worked good although we did lose electric one night for about an hour, around 4 in the morning....there are only 3 sites with sewer but they have a dump station...the sites have good spacing between them which is nice since there are no large trees to help seclude you....the restrooms were clean but the push button showers are a pain but tolerable....a lot of wildlife around the campground.....we would stay here again....beautiful sunsets and views of the lake.....all the picnic tables are on a covered patio which is nice.....beware of the wind and your awning, we never put ours out ......... We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Great park with great views. Roads are paved sites are gravel. Site 25 is a former park host site and the only site available with sewer hookup. Our site (site2) said max 35' RV length on the reservation site but we easily got our 40' coach on the site and could have got a 45' coach on the site. Quiet and beautiful sunsets. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

If you're up for a challenging hike do the Dog Canyon hike. Round trip was 12 miles from our campsite and back and took us 9 hours. Steep and strenuous at times. Be sure to visit White Sands National Monument. On Saturdays and Sundays the park manager gives guided tours of Oliver Lee's ranch house that has been restored. Very interesting tour.

We had reservations when we got to the Gate; the Camp ranger told us that the "paper was already sent down for the day"..apparently to the Camp Hosts. We were to check in with them; thankfully I knew the Camp site we were to go to as we went to the Camp Hosts x 2 without them being in. The trash was overflowing for several days and plastic bags blowing in the park. We never did see the hosts over our 5 day visit. We went to the Ranger Station several times and it was always closed. The restrooms were clean but cold- windows open in the ladies shower room and the temperatures were in the low 40's at night. It also did not get that warm in the day. Carlsbad also was not a highlight...the caverns were indeed a good visit- but the town is not in good repair. I would not visit this park again. Only 3 full hook ups available at the park. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

We prefer to camp in a park like setting and our setting here was great with a very good view of the lake and sunset. The sites are gravel and fairly level. Restrooms were clean but as noted cold and I did not really like the push button system to get water for the shower plus you could not control the temperature. We had no ranger at the gate, visitors center was closed, and we never saw the campground host either. We also missed not having a fire ring. We did however have horrific winds so be careful about that. All in all a good 3 night stop and we would camp here again. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Came here for Carlsbad Caverns and it did not disappoint. The drive into the campground is long but roads are in good condition. This is New Mexico in the Spring so it was windy and there's nothing to block the wind here so it does affect outdoor time. The lake was pretty and clean and had a few short hiking trails. I saw deer and lots of bunnies and jack rabbits. The bathrooms were not great. Cold metal toilets which didn't flush well, average cleanliness for a state park. The showers were decent and fairly clean. Unlike some other reviewers, I did not have any issues with bugs of any sort so that must be a seasonal thing. The price cannot be beat even though it was only 30 amp and non sewer. They do have some sewer sites here but the NM reservation system is kinda wacked as they have very few sites available for reservation. Being the paranoid camper that I am, I don't like showing up and hoping for the best. Other than the Caverns, there's really no reason to stay in Carlsbad. The town itself is not very nice and there's nothing else to do here but the Caverns were amazing and worth the stop over. Site accessibility (Easy in/out, roads good, looong drive in) - 4 Campground location (1 hr to the Caverns) - 3 Nearby amenities (Shopping fairly close by in Carlsbad) - 3 Site Privacy (Decent sized sites) - 4 Campground amenities (Bathrooms were dirty, dump onsite) - 3 Dog friendly (Dogs allowed everywhere but trails were minimal) - 3 Activities (Short hiking trails around camp. The lake was pretty) - 3 Cost ($14/night for 30/W/E) - 4 Staff friendliness (Rangers patrolled and they were very nice) - 3 Connectivity (Good signal w/out a booster for both ATT and Verizon. ABC and other random OTA) - 3 Total rating = 3.3. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

We arrived without a reservation on a Tuesday night just at sunset. Had called earlier & were told that we had a pretty good chance of getting one of the unreserved sites (#31-50). We got the last pull-thru, but, there were several other sites still available. Site was level and large. Mosquitoes were terrible after dark, but, seemed to be better in the morning. We left early & cannot report on the park. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Date of Stay: November, 2016 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed at Brantley Lake for 7 nights to visit Carlsbad Caverns. Great low price for the site and amenities. The park was about 25% occupied while we were there in November. We had a reservation for a back-in site with a nice view of the lake. Nice site separation, level, gravel pad, picnic table with shelter and wall for wind protection. Bathrooms were relatively clean (must have been cleaned since previous reviews). Private shower, but open large area for changing. Visitors center was closed every time we went to visit. Our main complaint about the campground was that during our week at the park there was a strong chemical or petroleum smell. It seemed to get worse at times, especially at night. We googled the area looking for nearby chemical plants or oil production facilities, but did not find anything, so not sure what the smell was. Would not return to this park because of that. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Stayed for 3 nights while visiting Carlsbad Caverns in a pull through site in the non-reservation section. Very nice big sites, clean, good views of the reservoir. Camp host stopped by to welcome us shortly after we picked our site. Electric and water worked great. Verizon signal strong. No cable but we caught some off air TV. The only problem we had was that the dump station was a bit tight for our big rig. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a nice, affordable NM State Park. The sites are gravel, mostly large, set far enough apart for good privacy, might require some leveling, and have a picnic table and shade shelter. The grounds are well kept with the exception of overflowing dumpsters the first two nights we were here. Oh, and there were tons of house flies and gnats around. Bring insect spray. The restroom/shower building was good news/bad news. They are spacious and bright with very large shower stalls with shelves for your bath products. The shower is an on/off button setup. Each button push is for about 4 minutes. No way to adjust the flow at all but there was plenty of hot water and good pressure when I used it. The bad news is that they were not that clean. There were two hunks of hair on the floor of the shower stall and there are tons of cobwebs and spiders in all the windows and the overhead light fixtures and skylight. If spiders freak you out, you probably should shower elsewhere. Also, there is no private changing area. There is a long bench along the common area outside of the shower stalls with some hooks for towels but no place for dry stuff in the stalls themselves. Other than that, this is a good value for $14 for water and electric for a few days while in the area. No wi-fi, but Verizon signal was very strong. I'd stay again. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Truck Camper.

Nice place to stay if you're going to Carlsbad Caverns. But it filled up while we were there; luckily had reservations. Saw many "reserved" that remained empty all night. Hope that the lost deposits as several people were looking for spots.

There is an "overflow" area; fee is only $8.00, but you'll be boondocking it. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Tent.

No criticisms of the park but was not to our liking. No sewer hook up that I asked for at Reserve America. Sites are close together and are angled for easier backing in. There were many empty sites which is a different observation than other reviewers. We had reservations for 2 nights and stayed 1. We camped in a travel trailer. There is a lot of wildlife in the area which is fun to sit and watch. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

The park was very nice. The sites are far apart with great picnic cover and wall for wind block, very little trees. Cleared path down to a nice little beach area. The only issue, the 30 amp electricity kept tripping throughout the hottest part of the day. We and at least 6 other sites around us had to reset the breaker every 7 to 10 minutes between 2pm til 8:30pm every day and the park attendants had to reset the main breaker often. The park attendants were very good and kept checking on all of the sites affected. We stayed four nights and 5 days. They say that it has been recently fixed but it is still an issue. Would definitely stay again if this situation was truly corrected. We camped at Brantley Lake State Park in a Motorhome.
