Excellent BLM campground. We stayed on Site# 8 which is a large pull-thru site overlooking the Valley of Fires. Fairly level with slight uphill slope; easy to level our 45' motorcoach. Site was right next to electric transformer, so had excellent voltage even when temps hit 100 degrees running our four 15,000 BTU A/C's. If you need to use the dump station, it is located on the ingress side as you enter the camping area. That being said, dump before you enter your RV site or you will have to turn around. The 3/4 mile walk thru the lava flow is very interesting. Will stay here again! We camped at Valley of Fires Recreation Area (BLM) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Definitely visit Smokey the Bear Historical Park and Museum in Carrizozo. Just $2 admission and if you grew up with Smokey, this is the place to visit. Had lunch next door at Smokey the Bear Restaurant offering excellent home-cooked meals reasonably priced.

This park is a little off the beaten path but well worth the drive. It doesn't have very many long and level spots but wasn't very busy both times we were there. We wish we had stayed more than one night. It is peaceful and very dark at night for star gazing. We camped at Valley of Fires Recreation Area (BLM) in a Motorhome.

The park is located on the edge of a lava flow and has a paved walkway through the lava flow with educational stops. It can be windy there but the views are great.

There are only 2 demerits for this park, one of which is not in their control. The drive thru sites, of the eyebrow type, are very sloped, both front to back and side to side, unusable for a larger motorhome. The back in sites are much better. The other draw back is the incessant wind since the sites are on top of a ridge and in the open with no protection. The day we arrived, the wind was a sustained 30 mph with gusts to at least 50. We had to pull in the slides on one side of the coach to keep the slide toppers from ripping. However, the restrooms and showers are very new and clean and there is a paved walkway into the ancient lava flow. The park is 4 miles west of Carrizozo, where there are a few services. Despite the wind, we enjoyed our stay and would go back. We camped at Valley of Fires Recreation Area (BLM) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The Three Rivers Petroglyph site, approximately 25 miles south of Carrizozo is very interesting and worth a visit. Also, Carrizozo has the state's largest photpgraphy gallery which is also worth stop.

We spent 3 nights here to visit the Trinity Site and Lincoln County. This is a BLM camp ground that has WE hookups, showers and flush toilets, paved parking and a private area for tents only. Only downside is the wind--RV area is on top with 360 degree views but it can be rough if the winds come up. The tent area has some protection from wind. You can't beat the price. The host and Ranger were readily available. The visitors center is open 9 to 5. There are no reservations. We got there on Thursday at noon and had no problem getting a site with hook ups. It was filled every night over the weekend. Sites are large and most all are pull thru. Some are little strange in design as if they added water and electric as an after thought. There are paved paths thru the lava flow area. Don't miss walking it. We camped at Valley of Fires Recreation Area (BLM) in a Travel Trailer.

Loved our stay here. Most (not all) sites close to level, lots of room, interesting geology and stellar views! Good Verizon cell service, which meant strong internet with MiFi device. Big central bath was clean enough but needed a little care - holiday (Labor Day) weekend could have been the reason. Good 50 amps service, tasty water at site. Dump station in campground. We will be back. We camped at Valley of Fires Recreation Area (BLM) in a Motorhome.

Carrizozo was ok, but we liked Capitan a bit further to the east. Also Lincoln (farther east still) has some very interesting, if violent, western history.

Rate reflects water/elec site and National Park senior pass. Sites are arranged along the park road with a nice turn around at the end of the road allowing you to check out all the sites easily before deciding on which site you want. All sites are fully paved, and as noted in a previous review several of the sites do require leveling, and we agree that site 15 is probably one of the best sites in the park. Very good Verizon and AT&T service. Very little over the air TV, but all sites are wide open for satellite service. Park hosts are on site, and water is treated municipal water from nearby Carrizozo. Each site has a covered picnic table also on a paved surface. We camped at Valley of Fires Recreation Area (BLM) in a Motorhome.

Pro: Ez access, 50e/w, several asphalt pull-thrus, on ridge (sky island) with views, sunsets and stars and the price is right. Take the walk thru lava fields or day-trip to Ruidoso/Almagordo.

Con: ridge is windy (all 4 days), but it keeps the knats away. Most sites take some real maneuvering to level-up. We camped at Valley of Fires Recreation Area (BLM) in a Motorhome.

The CG has 50/30amp service with paved roads and sites. The sites are either back-in or crescent shaped pull thrus. At least one third of the sites have leveling issues. Site 15 if the best site in the CG. There is also a separate tent only area that is very nice. Amenities include covered picnic table, grill, picnic pavilion, and a very nice, clean bath house. The area is high mountain desert landscape with no threes for shade. That means Hot in August. VZW was good, but there is no WiFi. Fees are based on hook ups. Mine was FHU with stated discount. Gnats! Gnats! Gnats! We almost pulled out before even setting up as the little critters were beyond awful. Then we struggled to set up in a very un-level campsite. Thankfully, the next campsite we tried was perfectly level, and the wind had started to blow so the gnats disappeared. The view from our campsite was just beautiful from the trailer, however we did not enjoy the covered picnic area because of the gnats. When the wind blew enough to keep the gnats away it was really too windy to sit outside. Yet, we had a marvelous time with a great day trip to the Three River Petroglyph Site, and a lovely slightly breezy evening hike on the remarkable nature trail across the lava bed. This is a really beautiful campground, although the electric and water are on the wrong side, necessitating extension cords. It's really a shame that a few of the campsites are such that it takes too many blocks to level up, at least more than we had on board! I would probably not go back this time of year due to the gnats. But I would stop at another time. I suspect that the leaky standpipes might be a case of too much pressure in the system. I was glad we had a pressure relief valve for our drinking water hose, as the standpipe leaked a great deal as others have mentioned. We camped at Valley of Fires Recreation Area (BLM) in a Travel Trailer.

What a treat! Wide paved road through park for easy access to spacious paved sites that have 50 amp service, great water pressure and amazing views! $18 or $9 with America The Beautiful Senior Pass! Definitely walk the interpretive walk through lava beds. RV sites with covered tables are on raised area above lava flows and tent area is closer to lava flows. Park has visitor center with books and literature explaining this high desert area. 5,200 feet is elevation! We camped at Valley of Fires Recreation Area (BLM) in a Motorhome.

Return visit and pretty much had the place to ourselves and selected a nice spot near the visitor center. electric steady per my surge meter and water pressure good but, like my last visit, campground piping leaks like a sieve. Park employees indicated that this is a holdover from the days when this was a State Park. Campground crew had to turn all park water off and then all park electricity off but came around and told us each time as well as let us know when everything was OK. Great, short trails to the overlook and the Nature trail through the lave flow. Good spacing between sites as with most State and National campgrounds. Nice ramada over the picnic table and a rogue fire ring nearby. We camped at Valley of Fires Recreation Area (BLM) in a Motorhome.
