We stayed here for two weeks while visiting Albuquerque. The park is split into two sections, the older one, where we were was a mix of paved and gravel sites and a tree for shade at each. The newer sites are all gravel, with no shade and appeared very long and wide. You're not right on top of your neighbors but still close enough. They don't take reservations so be sure to call before you stop. The park is one of the more quiet military campgrounds we've stayed at, with only occasional air noise which was mostly from the local airport.

The hookups were fine as were laundry facilities. No cable, but no issues picking up over the air channels and WiFi was fine. Not a lot of grass to walk pets, but there is some just down the street at the temporary lodging area. There are walking paths (sidewalks) that take you all around the housing areas without worrying about traffic. The exchange and commissary are ok, but close earlier than we're used to, so if you want to hit the food court for dinner, you'll need to do so before 7:00 PM.

All in all we enjoyed our stay at Kirtland and will definitely return if in Albuquerque again. We camped at Kirtland AFB FamCamp (Military Camping Only) in a Fifth Wheel.

Date of Stay: January, 2016 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Limited number of paved (concrete or asphalt) sites, mostly gravel without trees (not unexpected given New Mexico). WiFi appears to have been upgraded since January 2015 but still weak and spotty. Limited access (Eubank gate only open until Mid-night, Carlisle gate has metal barriers to entry so late arrival not recommended. Filled solid for Balloon Fiesta, however the rest of the year there seems to be ample sites available. We camped at Kirtland AFB FamCamp (Military Camping Only) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Many sites and adventures. Old Town, Sandia Crest (tram or driving), shopping, museums, Santa Fe approx 60 miles north, Casinos, and more.

The hookups all worked well. The WiFi did not work at all. We stayed in the new part of the campground, which was devoid of trees and greenery. The campground was well located on base, just inside the Eubank Gate. The grounds were very clean and well kept. The laundry cost $1 per machine. We camped at Kirtland AFB FamCamp (Military Camping Only) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Stay here Columbus Day weekend and enjoy the balloon fiesta. Santa Fe was especially nice as was Old Town Albuquerque.

We stayed on the graveled portion. Very few concrete and most of those appear to be taken by full-timers (even though the rules state 14 day except for a few exceptions.) Regardless, the spots are fairly level and the grounds crew has worked to keep the weeds (stickers called goat-heads) at bay. That said, the only issue we had is that the wind blows through Tijeras Canyon with a vengeance; while we were there we experienced winds in excess of 30 mph yet you can go North two miles and it will be calm - the venturi effect of the mountains and the winds coming through the canyon. Other than that a superb campground and easy access to all areas of town. There are two ladies who man the office, one is exceptionally pleasant, the other is, well let me just say I much rather deal with the other one. However, both are extremely helpful, knowledgeable and will do their very best to help you. We camped at Kirtland AFB FamCamp (Military Camping Only) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Balloon Fiesta during the time we were there so plan ahead. You have the Sandia Tramway which takes you from approximately 5500 feet up to 13000 feet; Santa Fe is approximately 60 miles north which offers a variety of sightseeing and other adventures.

We stayed here only one night on our way elsewhere. The park is on the base, just inside the Eubank gate. The newer area is all gravel, but very level. Access to all of the sites is very easy. There was some noise from the Sandia Labs facilities just to the south and some aircraft noise from the airport. You're on a base next to a runway. We made the choice. We can't say anything about laundry facilities. The bathrooms and showers are clean, but we didn't use them. The sites are close together. We have our own Wi-Fi hot spot, so didn't use the parks. There is Wi-Fi available. There are many local TV channels available with your antenna. We would stay here again. We camped at Kirtland AFB FamCamp (Military Camping Only) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Attractions: National Nuclear Museum is just off base outside of the Eubank gate. Balloon Fiesta is the first full week in October and well worth a visit.

We thought this a nice campground with long, wide, and level sites - and no shade - at least in the so-called "new" area. Staff was pleasant and helpful. We didn't use the showers, but bathroom was clean and well kept. WiFi is so-so depending on time of day, and whether or not those not so considerate are streaming data. Eubanks gate is tight but doable as previously reported. One quirky thing - the sewer was at the far end of our site. And, I mean far. In addition to our regular hose, I needed TWO extensions to connect. This is a good location for visiting the area, but I wouldn't recommend for Balloon Fiesta as it is 10 miles from the fiesta site with associated traffic gridlock. If you plan to visit Balloon Fiesta, stay at the huge RV park across the street from fiesta and take the free shuttle. We would visit again. We camped at Kirtland AFB FamCamp (Military Camping Only) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Balloon Fiesta, Breaking Bad tour, tram to top of Sandia mountain.

Park is Military only. The park is just inside the base from Eubanks Ave gate. Gravel with very large pull thru sites. Park is well lite and quiet. We camped at Kirtland AFB FamCamp (Military Camping Only) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The Area has many things to do. If there during the Balloon Fest, it's worth attending. If your are looking for interesting fast food try Twisters they have burgers and burritos both dinner and breakfast. The food is great and the price is good

Small park; no reservations taken, so it's first come, first serve. The park consists of two areas: An older area with shade trees and a newer area with no trees. The older area has more room between sites, but most were already taken. Park has a fenced dog park, but it is all dirt and no grass. The park is free of stickers so your furry friends won't get stuck, but be careful walking around the remaining area because they are everywhere! We camped at Kirtland AFB FamCamp (Military Camping Only) in a Motorhome.

We stayed in the newer section so had a level, open, gravel, large, pull through site. We self registered on a Sunday, so can't comment on the office staff. We camped at Kirtland AFB FamCamp (Military Camping Only) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

We entered through the Eubank gate. Approach the gate straight on because there are steel posts on each side that makes the entrance pretty narrow but adequate for our 40 foot motor home with minivan in tow.

Stayed in the newer gravel area again. Plenty of room and all sites are level. Love the gravel which is nice when it rains. Great location from I-40. We camped at Kirtland AFB FamCamp (Military Camping Only) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Use the Eubank gate. No problems, easy access. Open a lot so don't have to worry about weekend arrival. Gate closes at midnight. Gibson gate is open 24/7 but not as easy to get through. Wyoming gate is a bad choice.

We prefer the box stores out the Eubank gate.

We got here 4 days before Balloon Fiesta at 8:50am and were very lucky to go right into a site at 11:00am. Even luckier, we got a site in the older section where there are grass sites and trees for shade. The new section is nothing but gravel with sites separated by railroad ties. Goat heads are awful but not in the dog park. We used the bathrooms and laundry rooms right next to the office. The bathrooms were clean, except the women’s shower is very touchy in that it must be facing directly upwards for the water to be warm; otherwise, you will have a cold shower. The laundry rooms had 4 washers and 4 dryers and were $1 each. The office staff is very good about keeping to the 14-day rotation during busy periods such as this one. Even so, there were days when new arrivals had to go into dry camping, which has plenty of space for overflow, until they could get a full hookups site. There is no cable, but our antenna picked up all the local channels. The WiFi was really good where we were. After Balloon Fiesta, the FamCamp cleared out about 30% and we were able to extend another week with no problem. We really enjoyed our stay. We camped at Kirtland AFB FamCamp (Military Camping Only) in a Fifth Wheel.

We just stayed here for one night. We stayed in the new section which was okay for a big RV with our tow vehicle. Met our needs and we would come back again. We camped at Kirtland AFB FamCamp (Military Camping Only) in a Motorhome.

This is our third or fourth stay here. Very friendly staff. Spaces are large and level. WiFi worked great. Somewhat inconvenient for an overnight stay, due being a ways from I-40. We camped at Kirtland AFB FamCamp (Military Camping Only) in a Motorhome.

Prior review is right on. We stayed in the newer section. Good gravel with table (bench swayed) with full hookups. Side by side RV's. One faced one way, the next one the other way. Hookups in the middle. OK when RV's are pulled up as far as possible. WIFI weak and slow. We would stay here again. We camped at Kirtland AFB FamCamp (Military Camping Only) in a Motorhome.

The gravel spots in the new section are easy in and out and long enough you can lave towed vehicle attached if desired. Eubanks gate is most convenient; however as noted, it is tight fit for big rigs. Gibson gate is easier access but further from campground. Staff is friendly and helpful. They do sell propane at the campground. We will definitely stay here again. We camped at Kirtland AFB FamCamp (Military Camping Only) in a Motorhome.
