Beautiful small campground nested in the mountains. Limited campsites with electric, NO WATER at site, picnic tables are placed oddly - not convenient to site unless you pull in forward on sites. Beautiful walking trail loops marked with interesting sites. We camped at Manzano Mountains State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

What an amazing place! Nice, easy and well marked hiking trails (though at 7,200' you'll need to pace yourself). I had the place to myself (other than camp hosts) for a few nights. The trees really make it feel very private even when you do have neighbors. Incredibly peaceful, will definitely be returning here! Downsides: It's very dusty. Back of rig and towed unit were solid red from dust on the road. You don't have great views from the campground because of trees. It's a long way from anywhere. An hour to get to Moriarity on I-40 or an hour and a half back to Socorro on I-25. The last 3-4 miles of the road in are not for the faint of heart if you're driving a big rig (see details) We camped at Manzano Mountains State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

If you're in a big rig: Approaching from the south, making the acute turn is probably not an option. If you can't swing it you'll block the entire highway. Keep going up the road a little bit and there's a large open lot on the left where you can turn around . Last 3-4 miles is dirt/gravel, very narrow, *very* steep and twisty, with trees hanging over. Meeting another big rig coming the other way would be very difficult. Not a road you want to drive if it has been snowing/raining.

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

16 developed sites with picnic tables (some with lean-to), fire ring, BBQ grill, half with power. Some can be reserved (ReserveAmerica with service charges). About 30 undeveloped and group sites. Staff keeps CG very clean. Nicely maintained garden outside office with bird feeders. Great cell service, no WiFi. One bathroom / office building has M&F sides with flush toilets, cold water sinks. Can be overcrowded with group camping. Well-marked & maintained hiking trails around CG, with gate access to Cibola Natl Forest hiking trails. Very busy weekends & holidays.

NM state annual park pass available, then campsites are free, electric $4.00 / night.

Hot & dry conditions during July 2016, Stage 2 Fire Restrictions due to continued drought & nearby Dog Head fire. We camped at Manzano Mountains State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Visit Salinas Pueblo Missions (Natl Park Service). Gran Quivera, Quarai and Abó, takes about half a day. Nicely stabilized reminders of a time (abandoned about 1670) when natives were being transformed by Spanish. No charges.

Date of Stay: August, 2015 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

This park just reopened this year after a 4 year shutdown due to forest fires. Loop road and site access is tight but manageable. 7500 feet in elevation makes for a pleasurable summer stay. About 4 miles of hiking trails in the campground with access to the National Forest backing the area.

Great staff, ensured garbage was dumped several times a day. Bathroom facilities maintained very clean. Sites were cleaned and raked after each rig left.

Site layout is strange. Our site had the fire ring behind the unit and the picnic table at the front drivers side.

No water or sewer at sites. Potable water fill station and dump station located at park entrance. I had good quality power on a 50 amp site.

Weekend traffic was busy, due to a very large church group in the group shelter area for the weekend. We camped at Manzano Mountains State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Central location to several Indian Pueblos. Google search indicated a couple of restaurants in Mountainair, did not leave the campground. Fairly isolated area
