Having read the reviews I was really worried about the dirt road leading to the camp ground. Yes it is dirt and but it is only 2 miles. It is wide and on coming traffic, if any, stops or gets overs for rigs. It is rough as all dirt roads are so don't think about driving more than 20 mph--10 to 15 MPH will be easier on your rig. We went in and out several times a day. In summer try to reserve sites #5 to #39 as they have the most shade. The back ins have more privacy than the pull thru sites. There is no problem with water, simply stop at one of the threaded sites and fill your tank. When you enter the campground loop if your site is on the outside of the loop go right otherwise take the left fork. If you screw up you can turn around in the dump/restroom area but it is best to take the correct approach in case the dump is in use. The hosts were right across from us and were pretty invisible. I prefer friendly host but the place was clean and there was no noise. I would certainly camp here again but not in the summer. Nights were wonderfully but mid day was miserable. You definitely need reservations weekends. There are some first come/first served sites but these are the shorter/or less shady. We were there mid week and the park was 75% full every night. Cottonwood is not on the lake. It is below the dam near the river. It is a short walk to the river but there are no riverside sites or views. We drove thru the 4 other campgrounds that are on the bluff over looking the lake. Only Pine has hookups. Sites are short, worn , and crowded. Very few have views of the water. The roads are mazes with no directions. I took a shower at Pine since Cottonwood doesn't have showers. Showers were fine but it is 10 miles from Cottonwood. I would never camp at any of the 4 lakeside camp grounds even in my tent. They were loud crowded and noisy waiting for a place to happen. We camped at Navajo Lake State Park, Cottonwood Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Take the Durango & Silverton train ride. Visit the Aztec National Monument in Aztec, NM. Fishing is the main draw for Cottonwood CG. There is a nice hiking trail that runs pass the day use areas but it lacks shade in summer. Some of the day use areas are wheel chair accessible for fishing. Cottonwood CG has 3 nice handicap campsite.

The Cottonwood campground is very nice with paved interior roads and pads. Sites are spacious with space between the sites. There is 30 and 50 amp service as well as water, covered picnic tables and some sites have shade. Price reflects the $56 4/night price plus the $12 transaction fee. Now the bad part which is not the CG's fault so I did not deduct points from the rating. The 2 miles of county road getting to the campground is terrible but once you're in the park, it is paved. The county road is gravel with washboards and potholes. Perhaps it's better at other times of the year but it's awful now. Mosquitoes at the river were terrible. Had we known the condition of the road we would not have come. We camped in a 36' DP. We camped at Navajo Lake State Park, Cottonwood Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Bring what you need. The road to and from the CG are so bad, you really don't want to travel it anymore than absolutely necessary. Also, if you have dogs be aware that there are horrid little stickers on the ground.

It is important to know that there are several campgrounds at this state park. I chose Cottonwood because it has electric and paved roads. What I did not know was that while the interior campground roads are paved, you need to drive two miles on a very rough dirt road to get here. And once here, you cannot get to the dam or other parts of the state park. Cottonwood in near the San Juan River, but not on the lake. I will try one of the other campgrounds with electric sites next time because I hate to drive on washboard dirt roads with my relatively clean motorhome. I watched one truck pulling a small trailer do a very awkward turnaround and head back. Verizon here is 1-2 bars of 3G, which was also disappointing. Pads are asphalt with nice covered picnic tables, and water, but only 30 amp hookups. Really need to list each campground in this state park separately because they are quite different. We camped at Navajo Lake State Park, Cottonwood Campground in a Motorhome.

Might want to try one of the other campgrounds if, like me, you don't like to drive on really bumpy and dusty dirt road to get here.

Camped here for 3 nights, nice clean campground; has two restrooms, one on each side of the campground. Clean but has no showers. You have to drive to Navajo lake campground to use their showers. Some sites have electric and others do not; as well as shelter over the tables. The tables could use a little more maintenance, as in being power washed. There is no water at the sites. Water spigots are located throughout the campground so you will need either water jugs to haul to your trailer or a very long hose. The price we paid reflects the New Mexico State Park camping pass. We were at Cottonwood Campground which is on the San Juan River, not on Navajo Lake. The road was paved, as were all of the camping pads. The sites were well spaced and level. There were beautiful mature trees and nice walking paths to and along the river. We would certainly stay here again. We camped at Navajo Lake State Park, Cottonwood Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Our site had plenty of room for our 32 ft. trailer and long-bed tow vehicle. Verizon Wireless worked fine for voice calls but there was no 3G data signal. Dish TV worked. Sites and roads in the campground are paved but the road in was two miles of washboard and dirt. There was some kind of construction going on nearby that was very noisy 24 hours a day. That ruined an otherwise nice experience. Threaded water spigots are available throughout the campground. We probably would not stay again because of the access road. Been coming to this campsite for years. Love it, pretty private, paved spots with shelters, grill and fire pits. Some sites have electricity, and others are primitive. The sites do not have water at them. The water spigots are in the middle, and a will need a container or a very long hose to fill up your trailer. The park is pretty well clean, restrooms were clean. The only downside I have with it, is that the concrete tables under the shelters need to be power washed. They are grease spots on them from previous campers. This is a nice campground used mainly by those fishing the nearby San Juan River. There isn't anything nearby to do. However, if you drive 15 miles to Aztec we would highly recommend touring Aztec Nat'l Monument. This campground has a two mile dirt road to it which would be very slippery if raining. The campground itself has paved roads and sites. There are some electric sites but only water spigots placed here and there. There is a dump station and flush toilets. The sites are reasonably spaced but because of the tree overhangs there aren't many for big rigs. However, Site #4 would accommodate you. Cottonwood campground, on the San Juan river, NOT the main campground at the lake. There was trash and litter scattered all about, grass (weeds) needed trimmed or mowed. 10 pm quiet time was not enforced. Host was not friendly, quite rude during an emergency when power was lost and unable to power breathing machine. I will not return and do not recommend this campground. We stayed two weeks at the Cottonwood Campground below the dam located on the San Juan River. The east end is very wooded and the west end more open if you need satellite. The camp is designed for fishermen. We were going to stay at the main campground but the road is steep, narrow and long and the camp sites were crowded. Downside: mosquitoes, no Verizon service, the staff was taken by 'surprise' so the park ran out of water on one weekend and had to close one of the comfort stations, 2 miles of very very rough dirt road leads to the park, roads from Aztec leading to the park are heavily traveled by heavy trucks and is in poor shape, quiet time is NOT enforced, no showers. Upside: tons of hummingbirds, plenty of space, beautiful area with close access to the well stocked river, nice winery close by, two comfort stations, small grocery and tackle shop in Navajo Dam, quiet during the week, good place to explore Indian ruins. We camped at Navajo Lake State Park, Cottonwood Campground in a Motorhome.

This is a fun family campground on the San Juan River in northern New Mexico. There is a short (1 + mile) dirt road into the campground, which gets bad if it has been raining. The sites are large enough for our 35" 5th wheel plus pickup, and we saw a couple of 40 footers in neighboring sites. There is ample room between sites. Note that you have to share water with several sites, so you have to fill your tank and disconnect. The birdwatching was amazing. We had several dozen hummingbirds at our feeders. There were finches, siskins and grossbeaks as well as numerous other birds. There is good fishing on the San Juan river, which is a very short walk from the campground. All sites have picnic tables; many are covered. Every site has a grill. There are fire rings, but it is a good idea to bring your own firewood. There is also a dump station at the campground. Be sure to use the state reservation system as this campground fills up quickly, and you cannot count on space being available, especially on the weekends. We camped at Navajo Lake State Park, Cottonwood Campground in a Fifth Wheel.
