Stayed for 2 nights on way home to AZ. Gallup is reasonably close for shopping, supplies. Lake is pretty with lots of picnic facilities. Dam is easy walk from the road.

We We needed a place to stay for the night and gave Bluewater Lake SP a try. We are pulling a car on a dolly (52' total) so a pull thru is a good idea and we found one, all the electric sites were back in. The site is long enough and level. It's early April, not crowded A nice place, I'd stay here again. We camped at Bluewater Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Although park was "shut down" for winter (no water at individual sites and no showers/restrooms), we enjoyed the truly New Mexico landscape. Sites were level and, given the slow season, there were plenty to choose from. Potable water fill was available near campsites and dump station located at entry/exit to park. A sort drive (about 7 miles) south of I-40 on good, paved road. Definitely would stay again, in or out of season. We camped at Bluewater Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

We stopped for the night passing through. No staff around, host sign but no host--they were in another area. Sites are gravelly, and not for tents. Some sites even a tent wouldn't fit. Some blowing trash, and we finally chose a developed site (picnic table & fire ring). Pit toilet was disgusting. Beyond dirty. Water was in a different area of the park. Dog poop was all over a LOT of the sites. We chose not to go swimming, as the water had a bad odor to it and was murky. The odor was worse. Dogs were running loose in the beach/swim area if it was even that. No cell phone service for AT&T. Not sure about Verizon but was told no one's service works there. Park looked run down to me and not taken care of. The things they have going for them are the views of the dam & lake, and fishing. That's it. We won't go back. I have yet to understand why people won't clean up after their pets. We camped at Bluewater Lake State Park in a Tent.

We drove here expecting to stay, but then after driving around the only loop with electric, we decided it was too tight. Also, to fill up with water in a Rig our size was going to be tricky. We were traveling in a 30 ft 5th wheel. The drive in was beautiful but very steep in places. The campsites were not well-groomed. This campground would be much better suited for smaller campers. We camped at Bluewater Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Pleasant but not much reason to stay more than one night. Do not go south at Thoreau unless you want primitive camping. Take the exit at Prewitt which will take you to the campground with electric and water. Gate locked at 9pm in October and 6pm in November. You can still get out but can't get in. Lake very low. We camped at Bluewater Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

We only stayed here for one night and did not go to the lake but this seemed like a gem of a place for what we expected. It is off the beaten path and the high elevation keeps it nice and cool at night. The sites are not very level and there is little grass. There is power available for only the extra four bucks. We were shocked that the flush bathrooms were closed at 9p and did not open until 7a. I couldn't find an alternative bathroom so we just had to hold things in until the morning. I am not sure why they do this. Also, the water looks terrible...not sure if it is iron or what but the water is brown and not even useable to make coffee. Also, the local homes and trailers near the entrance look scary with trash all over the place. We were happy that they closed the gates at 9p as it provided isolation and protection from them. Overall the experience was good however. We camped at Bluewater Lake State Park in a Tent.

About 7 miles South of I-40, and requires going up and then down one mountain. The road up is very gentle, the road down is steep and will require lower gears and going slowly around the numerous curves. Lightly vegetated sites with pinyon pines, not many sites are completely level. Take the upper electric loop if you want a 30 amp plug in (no water or sewer). Good cell service and very quiet. The ranger staff was very helpful and let us drive in to pick our site, and then pay for it later. Sites near the lake, which was drawn down a huge amount, are only primitive. The lake wasn't that attractive with the big bathroom ring around it, but I'm sure it's nice when filled up. You are at over 7,000 feet here and will notice the thin air. We've learned at some New Mexico parks that your tow car is free, but on the information boards, it says "$10 for extra car." We had paid the $10 at a park this summer, by mistake, but they will not make a refund, only give you a credit on your next night camping. We camped at Bluewater Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

We camped here on 9-1-14 and 10-11-14. Bluewater Lake State Park is consistently a good place to camp. Thanks to being several miles from the freeway, there's no traffic noise. And best of all there's NO train noise. We camped at Bluewater Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This park is very nice, we felt it is was a gem in the wilderness kind of park. Elevation is 7800 ft. Sites are easy to enter, but many are not level. Most sites have no hook-ups, but there is one area with 30 amp electric only hook-up. Water is available to fill your tank at a couple places in the park. No potable water at dump station. We were told by other campers the fishing is really good in this beautiful lake. We camped at Bluewater Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Rate reflects annual senior pass. Beautiful campground but can be very windy. Open spaces are staggered to seem farther apart. Lake is currently very low, but there is still fishing and a few small boats were on the water. We camped at Bluewater Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Nice park with a few electric sites. We are usually here in the off season so have always found a site. Quiet place with a dark sky for watching stars. Some of the sites are far from level but most require only a minor adjustment. We camped at Bluewater Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Large state park with multiple campgrounds, yet only 15 electric sites. Community water spigots, no water hookups. Clean restrooms, but locked at night after 9pm. Vault toilets are available through the night. Beautiful canyon hike with well maintained trails along the rim and into canyon. Abundant cows wandering and piles to avoid. Lake was down due to drought but boaters and campers along the waters edge on weekend. Main gate is also locked at 9 pm, but a call to ranger station will allow late entry. Rate reflects Annual Pass. We camped at Bluewater Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is a very pretty state park campground. I would not recommend it for big rigs. Ours is 36 feet long, and we had difficulty backing in a spot, and there are some tight curves. They need to do a better job of trimming the tree branches. If we had a smaller RV we would return. We camped at Bluewater Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.
