Wow! $14 a night with water and power! That seems to be the going rate at the New Mexico State Parks. This park is located near the Rio Grande just north of Las Cruces. It is in the desert with little shade so a park for the cooler months. There are pros and cons. Pros: It's a great price for hookups. The sites are clean and pretty level and on a concrete pad. There is a picnic table under a roof which is also on a concrete pad. Each site has a fire ring. The views are great with mountains to the west and the east. The sunsets and sunrises are often amazing. The camp hosts and rangers are very friendly and helpful and the place is kept clean. The showers are clean and provide good warm water. There is wifi in and around the visitor's center. Cons: There is only one bathroom with water and showers, and it is a longish walk through sandy and gravely trails or roads. It can get dusty. The water saving devices in the sinks make the water hard to turn on. There are railroad tracks near the campground the trains run at all hours. On the whole this a good value in the Las Cruces area. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Visit Mesilla, Hatch and hike in the Organ Mountains.

We hiked in the Organ Mountains and had wonderful views and saw a great diversity of plant and animal life. Hiking here is a treat. We also took a trip the Hatch - "the chile capital of the world" which is well worth the trip for the local agricultural products. It's a neat, funky little town with some nice little restaurants; however, don't expect four star dining think down home cooking New Mexican style.

This is a little gem in southwestern New Mexico. Nice spacious campsites, covered picnic tables, concrete pads, water and electric, nice hiking trails. The camp hosts are friendly and the campground is well maintained. The only problem we had was at the dump station when we left. It was full and we could not dump. Other than making sure the dump station worked, our stay was very nice and if in the area again, we would definitely return. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Only 30 miles to Hatch, the pepper capital in the country. Had a wonderful lunch at The Pepper Pot which was featured in The Food Network Magazine. Cute town with pepper fields as far as the eye can see plus interesting shops that sell some incredible salsas. Definitely a "go to" destination.

Stayed here two nights while visiting local area and White Sands National Monument. Stayed in new Cholla loop which has 50 amp service and water. Reservation site stats 35 foot maximum, but I stayed in site 26 in a 37 foot Toy Hauler. It was tight but doable. Staff was execellent, escorted us to site and helped me pull in. Nice campground on a hill overlooking the Rio Grande river valley. No shade trees, but pavilions at each site with tables. Dump station at visitor center. Note: Can be hot here in the summer. Would stay here again if we are in the area. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Great park. Several walking/hiking trails right in the park. Family Dollar in town in case you forgot something. Friendly hosts and rangers. Campgrounds are on a ridge so you have some nice views and great sunsets. Would definitely camp here again. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Motorhome.

Small state park, clean and well-kept. Several hiking trails through the natural surroundings, some lead to the canal and dam, which is a diversion dam. Looked like they were dredging, so no water was flowing over it. Picnic areas are closed to car traffic during the winter months, but you can hike to them, very short distance from campground area. All the sites in our loop were pull-through loop-style, with a covered picnic table on a concrete pad with stone walls, and a fire ring nearby. Site surface for the rig was gravel, and kind of soft at the edges due to typical desert erosion patterns. Although we could hear (and see) the train, it didn't bother us. Other than that it was quiet and peaceful. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Just stayed one night, didn't look like there was anything around shopping-wise. Las Cruces is about 15 miles south for anything you might need. This campground is easy to reach from I-40, and right off of I-25.

Large sites with cement slabs, electric & water, Dump on site. Lots of walking trails. I have stayed at this park many times as it is close to Las Cruces. Fall & winter can have freezing nights so you will want heated water hose or to disconnect at night. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

This is a great little park for winter weather - but in August, not so much. Because there is no shade for the trailers and in August it is HOT, and I do mean hot, I would only stop by here again in late fall, winter, early spring. The grounds are very well maintained. We stayed in the Cactus Patch Campground - all pull throughs - with generous spacing between sites. Each site has a concrete patio with a half stone wall, metal covering, and placement of a nice large picnic table. The pads are also concrete and as of this writing the hook ups are only 30 amp, but they are in the process of building a few 50 amp sites. No sewer hook ups, dump station is available; other hook ups were well maintained and worked very well. Great water pressure. It appears that some loops have only port-a-potty type facilities and no showers. There is a much larger restroom across from the Ranger Station and looks big enough to have showers, but I did not go in to find out. There are several hiking trails, but all of the trails are very short in duration. If you are a walker/runner as I am, you will need to go out to the main road where there is a very nice "sidewalk" along the main road. The dam borders the Rio Grande River and if you look real hard you can see it, but the view is mostly hills and mesa. The stars are amazing and we did enjoy a very nice sunset. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Las Cruces is a nice little town. The historical district called Old Mesilla Village is a nice treat - a much smaller version of Santa Fe.

Gravel roads, easy pull-thrus on concrete pads. Picnic ramada is concrete pad, covered, and sheltered w/half wall; nice touch! Signage for loops and shower houses are scarce or tiny. We got into the group but still able to turn around (40'+toad). Easy access to I25. With wind is dust, however. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a great place for over night. Convenient to I-25 and Las Cruces.
Only 1 mile off I-25. We stayed in the Cactus Patch Loop with w&e. Nice covered picnic table on concrete pad. Clean rest rooms and showers. Good walking trails. A real value for the money. Reservations are needed for the w&e sights as this is a small campground near an interstate it gets heavy use. I have camped here several times and always enjoyed it. This time I arrived in a wind storm with gusts up to 60mph. The last few miles on I-25 I felt as if I was hauling a drunken trailer. Was really relieved to get to our camp site. High winds happen in the spring in NM. Couldn't do anything but hunker down and wait it out. Not the parks fault. Winds died down around 6PM as they usually do in that area. Winds were forecast for the next day also so we left at 7AM. HINT: Winds can be bad in NM but they usually show up in late morning and die down around 5PM. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Dry camped here, right off 185/25. High winds, so good to have a spot. Park volunteer and superintendent were very helpful. Spot overlooking very dry Rio Grande. Small park, all filled on a March, Tuesday night. Close to Hatch and Las Cruces. Would definitely stay here. Yes, right next to a rumbling train track, several in afternoon and early evening. No blasting horn and none through night. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Motorhome.

Sites with water/electric were full. The rate is for an undeveloped, flat dirt area where they allow RV's if you don't need hookups. Plenty of room to park/turn around. Train track nearby but only 1 train in evening and another later that night. This park is convenient to I-25 and OK for one or two night stay. Visitor center had a well stocked library for trading. Wasn't many conveniences nearby. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Loved my stay at Leasburg Dam. The hosts were extremely friendly and helpful, as were my neighbors. I opted to dry camp in the the Agave Loop, where the sites are much more private and rustic and a mix between electric and non-electric. The Cactus Patch Loop is more of your traditional RV Park kind of vibe whereas Agave Loop feels more like State Park camping. I took a non-electric at the end of the Agave loop that was completely private and sat on a bluff overlooking the Rio Grande. It had a large pavilion with a picnic table and a fire ring made of rocks. The view/privacy were worth having no electric/water to me and the site cost $10 instead of $14. There was a fresh water spigot maybe 100 feet away. I stayed on a Saturday night, the campground was full and it was as quiet as can be. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Excellent state park facility. Sites are nicely spaced, offering privacy because of location, not because of vegetation. Plenty of bird and animal activity. I put a bird feeder up and the birds went crazy! Convenient location to Las Cruces. White Sands NM is about 1 hour drive away. Hatch NM nearby if you need a supply of chiles. Gila Cliff Dwellings a nice day trip. Plenty to see on the 3 hour drive and the Cliff Dwellings are well worth the drive. Would stay here again. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Motorhome.

Very nice park. New Mexico does a great job providing sites with permanent shelters. Our camping area had pit toilets that were like brand new. Flush toilets and showers were back at the main bldg by the Visitor center - a short bike ride away from our spot. Nice walking trails and super helpful staff. Dring our stay in winter. WiFi was available in the Visitor Center but only from 12 pm to 4 pm, . Electric and water at our site were great. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Motorhome.
