If you are looking for quiet, this is the place to stay. It is a bit remote but the scenery (not much water due to continuing drought) is quite nice. This is a good choice for viewing the beautiful night skies while enjoying the campfire. We camped at El Vado Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

New Mexico state parks always offer such great value. For $14, you get hookups, a dump station, tons of elbow room around your rig, a nice ramada fire ring/table, and as much nature as you'd like. Our site was right by some nesting osprey. The lake is severely low right now, but we really enjoyed watching the daily monsoons build over the mountains and then let loose with a very beautiful lightning show every night we were there. Be sure you stock up on all your supplies. This place is a drive to anywhere over some pretty bumpy/poorly maintained roads. Once you get here, relax and stay a while. Very nice, on-top-of-things camp host, too. We camped at El Vado Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

With our 40' motorhome we stayed in Pinon Beach Campground on Site #64 which was a beauty. Was all by itself on a peninsula with lots of room to park. The only downside was the narrow, dusty road coming to it and the very dusty site. It needs some gravel. We mentioned the narrow road for big rigs and immediately there was tree-trimming in progress. There were other nice sites in Pinon Beach for $10.00 with no hookups in this campground. Grassy Point Campground has the electric and water sites for $14.00. Elk Run Campground has no hookups and is $10.00.There is a boat ramp and the only place to keep your boat in the water is at Pinon Beach Campground. There is a dump station but no potable water there. You will need to drive to one of the hookup sites to get water. The road getting to the campgrounds is all paved and good traveling. This was a more "modern" campground than the nearby "Heron Lake State Park and the lake was much higher and prettier. It was not crowded while we were here, but this was during the week. We had excellent Verizon signal using our Air Card. We camped at El Vado Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Most of the facilities were closed for the winter but being in a self-contained motor home, it did not matter. We did try to get some information on a road but the ranger station was closed. This is a nice park with varying rates depending on the services at the site. The dogs frolicked in the lake and enjoyed it. The site was level and we enjoyed our stay here. At night a big storm came in with high winds and heavy rain. The "flashing" lights were activated and I think they mean "get off of the water" but the sign was confusing. We would stay here again. We camped at El Vado Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

We camped here for 3 weeks. Located down stream from Heron Lake, this is less used and smaller park. High country is green and cool. Positives: Absolutely beautiful, close to lake, extreme stars, friendly staff, good fishing and boating, not crowded, quiet, nice trails. Negatives: no cell phone coverage, no full hookups, somewhat noisy on the weekends at night, Chama grocery is closed for reconstruction, only basic supplies are available. Closest full service store is about 50 miles away at Dulce, Espanola or Alamosa. We camped at El Vado Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.
