Electric and water, dump station on way out. Gravel roads and sites, spacious. Nice park. Not much for lake activity, water level way down and not conveniently accessible. Wide gravel trail runs between various campgrounds. We camped in Blanca, which has hookups and room to maneuver. Other CG's here are for smaller rigs dry camping or tents. We camped at Heron Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This little park has some wonderful trails and the trail in the section of the park where we stayed offered a great place to watch the sunset and the dark skies made for some awesome star-gazing. Situated about 10 miles from Chama, NM., this park sits on a no-wake lake, making the surroundings quiet, which we really appreciated. The roads and sites are all large gravel. Our site was fairly level, very spacious, and had a fire pit and picnic table. There are only two full-hook up sites in the park and we had one of them. Utilities were in great working order and conveniently located on the site. The camp host is very friendly and helpful. We would definitely come back and stay here again. We camped at Heron Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is one of NM best state parks. The restrooms/showers were clean but worn. But you won't find many camp grounds with with W & E for $14. Heron Lake State Park actually has eight campgrounds. Blanca and Willow are the only CG's with hookups. They also are the only CG's not on the lake. However the lakeside campgrounds are better suited for tents, vans and small trailers. Blanca has the largest sites. Willow is tighter but it does have more shade. Blanca is big rig friendly. We had 4gs for our phone. The hosts were nice. Heron is a no wake lake so it is quiet. Big rigs and folks who need pull thru sites should make reservations even for weekdays. Others should be able to find a spot in either Blanca or Willow on weekdays. Weekends tend to fill up by Friday. Keep in mind that this is state park not a resort. It is in the country. Folks who love the outdoors will love it here. There are 2 great hiking trails. Fishing is a major draw for the park. We camped at Heron Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Chama is famous for its train. Ride the train!!!!! Hike. Fish canoe/kayak/sail. Relax. Ice is available at the visitors center. Gas, several good restaurants and groceries are available in the small town of Charma. If you can't ride the train drive north from Charma to CO. Beautiful scenery follows the train tracks.

Great little park. Certainly out of the way for most places, but good roads all the way there. If you want peace and quiet and night stars, this is the place. Many sites can hold a pretty good sized rig, but remember they're only 30 amp, so no two AC's. We stayed in #1, very little traffic, easy back in, some ate even pull thru but might be tight for bigger rig to pull through. Great host. We camped at Heron Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

We stayed here a couple of nights in the Blanca Campground just before the seasonal restroom closure. Perhaps because of the pending closure and the departure of the campground host, the restroom was left untouched in a poor sanitary condition. The same status prevailed in the adjacent Willow Campground. Loop roads are gravel and the spacious sites are basically a combination of dirt and loose gravel. There are an assortment of sites and most will accommodate various size RVs. Privacy at both campgrounds is at a premium with plenty of juniper trees and other native vegetation. Both campgrounds are on the edge of the Verizon zone. In the Blanca campground cell phone reception is sufficient between sites 39 and 45. At the Willow Campground, reception is best at site 21. Otherwise there is zero VZ coverage here. To find the lake one must go hiking. The lake level is extremely low and there is evidence its been low for a prolonged period of time. Actual access to the lake is difficult due to the soft quick sand like surface along the water edge. Only a few other campers during our stay on a weekend. It was very quiet with dark sky nights and secluded. We stayed here in a Motorhome. We camped at Heron Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

We stayed in Blanco loop with water and 30 amp electric. Nice long half circle level pull through with covered picnic table and fire ring. Huge sites with Ponderosa Pines, Pinion and several varieties of Juniper screening line of site between sites. Roads and sites are good gravel and level. CG is quiet and less busy than in the past as there is little boating activity due to low lake level, which is really the only negative we found. We camped at Heron Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad in Chama is great. There are several nice hiking trails that run through the several campgrounds and along the lake all the way to El Vado Lake State Park. Lot's of cool geocaches in the area also.

The sites are huge and well layed out. Some have quite a bit more privacy than others. The biggest rigs in the world would have no problem navigating the Blanco loop.

Verizon signal was patchy. We had a perfectly usable 4G at our site 45, but there were a lot of other sites with no signal at all, as we discovered on our walks.

There are a couple sites with sewer available on the other loop but they have less privacy.

We were a little disappointed that most of the sites offer no real view other than the pines, juniper and sage in this flat area. A few had some view of distant mountains and mesas. You wouldn't even know the lake was there if you didn't hike the short trail.

Nearest grocery store is in Chama, which is about a 45 minute round trip.

We did drive over to El Vado State Park and will definitely stay there next time. All of the sites at El Vado are right on the lake (some just feet from the dropoff down to the lake) with GORGEOUS views. The warning signs about trailer size on the road to El Vado are not applicable if you're going to the state park when coming from Hwy 84/Tierra Amarilla, which is the main route. It IS a problem if you try to come "the back way" along 112 from the southwest. Coming the back way is not something someone would normally do as it's a minimally maintained dirt road, but it's reasonable to assume that someone blindly following GPS might try that route and get themselves in trouble. We camped at Heron Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Heron Lake State Park is a great place to camp when you want to get away from it all. We had a pull-through site with 30 amp electrical service and water hookup. There is a dump station at the front of the campground. Sites are large and private with well-placed pine and juniper trees between. Our site was mostly level. Campground roads are dirt/gravel, and well-maintained. Camp host was friendly and accessible. Hiking trail passes through the campground. Lots of wildlife to see. We camped at Heron Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Visited early October 2015, stayed in Cottonwood campground, spot #17. Very few people here, maybe 5 other RV's in all campgrounds. Great level pull through site with view of the lake. Covered cabana over picnic table. 30 amp power was a little low on voltage, but we didn;t need A/C at this time of year. Blanco campground was open, but restroom and showers were already winterized and closed. Lake water level was low, but a few boats were out during the day. Nice gravel hiking trails to view mule deer and bunnies. We camped at Heron Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Stayed in Blanco loop. Big clean sites. Many pull-through sites. Visitor center closed. Park was nearly empty. One way road through campground except many of the pull-through sites are accessed by going the opposite way. Sign at entrance to loop tells you which sites are accessed going the "wrong way." Spacious. Willow Creek sites are not as spacious or as easy to access. We camped at Heron Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

The review of this campground is probably skewed because the water level was extremely low and boating was restricted. The park was only about 1/3 filled during our stay.

Only Blanco and Willow loops have water, electric, flushed toilets and showers. All of the other loops were dry camping with vault toilets. There was a dump station at the entrance to both Blanco and Willow loops. Blanco and Willow loops also have camp hosts.

The bathrooms and showers were clean. The showers were on a push button timer and the water temperature could not be regulated. We did not use the showers.

All of the interior roads and sites were on crushed rock and dirt. It rained quite a bit during our stay but the interior roads were not muddy. There was a combination of pull-thru sites and back-ins. All sites had a picnic table and a fire ring. Sites 52 thru 60 are non-reserveable. You can stay at these sites for a maximum of 14 days.

The Blanco loop appears to have more privacy and is not as squeezed in as the Willow loop. The electrical box contained 15/30 amp service. The voltage was low - hovering around 116 volts.

Verizon cell phone was on "extended" network but the reception was good. The Verizon air card reception was good. It was extremely quiet at night and during most of the day.

We would definitely come back to this state park is we were in the area. We have a 32 foot 5th wheel. We camped at Heron Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is regarding the Blanco Electric campground. This is one of our favorite places to stay in NM. The sites are large and private. Most have shade. It's a quiet campground during most weekends--the campground hosts and rangers are available for help, if needed. The area has walking and biking trails right from the campground, and the visitor's center has interesting information about the area. If you want to get away to a quiet place, I would recommend Heron Lake. We camped at Heron Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This review is for the Blanco Loop. You have very large private level sites. Some sites you can see distant views of the lake. The lake is very low at this time. We would have given this park a 10 if it had sewer. While we were here the restroom and dump station were closed for repairs. The camp hosts were nice people. For us it's a good location, as we like to be away from towns. We camped at Heron Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.
