This is a beautiful campground in a lovely area. Would have given it a much higher rating, except that their power for our 30 A site was very unreliable. Could not even run one AC unit with everything else in the MC turned off. We finally resorted to running our generator during one particularly hot afternoon in order to make the coach livable. That said, the site was paved, level and there are enormous amounts of room between most sites. Really large open areas to walk your dog. No ATT cell, no WiFi. We camped at Wellesley Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Stayed in the no hookup Eagle Loop... but was surprised to find a water tap within 100 feet so I could fill my tank. Campsite itself was not very level (and I did not bring enough blocks) but the view was fantastic. Huge picnic tables, good fire rings, plenty of space between sites, convenient bath houses, etc. A real winner. The campground is about 15 minutes from downtown Alexandria Bay. At the entrance to the park there are good stores for firewood, bait/tackle, and even a sizable convenience store. Boats for rent, clean laundry room, etc. all at camp headquarters. Quite nice, if a bit pricey for no hookups. We camped at Wellesley Island State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Follow the directions on the web site and look for signs. Must stop in registration office to get entry pass. Roads are paved. Follow speed limit. There are only about ten 50 amp sites so reserve early. All are on loop F. Water pressure was a little low. Sewer and electric good. No cable. Getting a satellite signal was tricky with the trees but doable. Only 2 OTA channels. No ATT signal in park. Only phone signal was from Canada so shut roaming off. If have a longer coach recommend exterior sites in loop F. We needed plenty of blocks to level out. Lots of places to walk dogs. This place is over 700 acres. Beautiful park with trees and boulders along with crystal clear water of river. Nature Center is worth a visit. Recommend you bring a canoe or kayak to enjoy paddling to the nearby islands. Bring your supplies since market is about 20 minutes away in Alex Bay. There is a $3 toll to go north on the bridge to the island but none going south. Going north from the park you end up in Canada. This place is the nicest state park ever. Very clean. We will be back. We camped at Wellesley Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Go north to Canada and drive along the scenic parkway. Visit Alexander Bay and Sacketts Harbor and towns in between. For sure visit Boldt Castle on a Uncle Sam tour and include the boathouse. This will take a day. Eat at Tin Pan Alley in Sacketts Harbor and visit bakery across the street. Fishing is good here both from boat or shore.

Ok, maybe you think, this guy doesn't get out much! But you're wrong. This is our fourth annual 3-4 month trip across the country...keep that in mind. I didn't feel good about picking one of the standard parks in the area, lots of reasons, so I took a chance on a "State Park". Now, know we are standard park users. This park is unbelievable. Truly. Nope, not a lot of amenities with the park; i.e. water park, video room, etc., etc.. Nope. Just one of the most beautiful, well laid-out parks we've ever encountered. Spaces are at least 30' apart. Seriously. Each is paved, level, with fire ring and patio table. Deep enough for trailer & truck. Gorgeous setting near the seaway. If in this area, do pick this. We camped at Wellesley Island State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

September 25 Wellesley Island State Park, Wellesleyl Island, NY 1000 Islands, site 76 no hookups, electric and full in the park, 5 areas in the park, $31, bathhouses with showers, dump station, This park is right off 81, exit 51 crossing the international bridge in the 1000 island area. There are five areas in the park with electric, full hookups and no services. We decided to take site 76 in the Eagle area with no services. Our site was on the water with plenty of shade and the breeze from the water. This was a very hot and humid day and we would choose the site again if in the area. Bathhouse with shower in walking distance and water just a few sites over. This park is huge and most of the electric sites are in fields with no shade. Check in was easy and the girl was very nice. This was a weekday so the park was not crowded and will close the second weekend in October. A one night stopover for us as we are heading back to New England. We camped at Wellesley Island State Park in a Motorhome.

This place is huge and pretty much out of the way. You have to cross a narrow toll bridge to get to the island. The staff was very helpful as the site I picked out on line was stabilized but was muddy on each side with a small lake on the right side after an afternoon of rain. We were allowed to move to a paved handicap site which was more than I hoped for. We camped at Wellesley Island State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a fantastic state park. Has all the amenities you need. We stayed in the full hook-up loop and the site was very spacious. Site surface was asphalt and featured a fire ring and picnic table.

Newer camp store with playground was very nice. The beach is adequate and refreshing. The views of the St. Lawrence were amazing. I will be back. We camped at Wellesley Island State Park in a Motorhome.

This was our second stay at a NYS park and we were impressed with the beautiful grounds and upkeep of same. Although we did not have a waterfront site, we were within an easy walk to the water. Touring each loop, many sites were waterfront and just spectacular. We camped at Wellesley Island State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a $2.75 toll for cars to get on the island, but definitely worth it given the benefits of staying at this park. Do take the Boldt Castle tour/2 Nation tour as it was interesting and so pretty. Clayton is a lovely town to visit - a little more sophisticated/upscale than Alex Bay, which we enjoyed also.

This is a terrific campground. We stayed with our toddler in the last week of the season. It wasn't crowded and some beautiful fall foliage was just beginning to come in. The park is massive, but impeccably maintained, although the nature center was closed for renovations during our stay. All of the sites in our loop had been redundant in the last year, and while not level, our site required minimal effort to level the trailer. It was also spacious from side to side, and there's plenty of room between sites...you're not on top of your neighbor. The only complaint I would have is that the camp store and recreation center close after Labor Day - in my view these should remain open for the entire camping season. The beach, the playgrounds, the trails, all made us want to return at the height of the summer season. We'll be back. We camped at Wellesley Island State Park in a Travel Trailer.

What an amazing state park. We stayed in the Fox loop with full hookups. Note, there is not a bathhouse nor showers in this loop. Check in was easy since we had reservations. Bring your pets vaccination records as they will ask you for their proof of rabies vaccination. We chose site 15 because it backed up to the woods, we had morning sun at our awning and great afternoon shade, this along with sites 17, 19, 21 and 23 would be our choice for future visits. The sites are spacious so you actually have a "yard." The sites are paved but do require some leveling blocks. Water pressure was excellent, sewer worked without any issues but the electric dipped down to 99 volts on occasion. This park is BIG. We took our dogs on many walks and with walking "around" the park loops you can easily do 3 plus miles. If you are looking for electric only, you might want to to try loop H, very open sites and quiet. We kayaked several times from a put in spot by loop H, parking is available so you can leave your car. Great playground for kids by the camp store / marina with amazing views of the river. We can't give it a "10" due to the lack of security, after the staff leaves anyone can drive into this park and set up camp. There are no markers on the sites to tell you who belongs and who does not. A couple sites down we saw a RV drive in after dark and leave early in the morning. The week we were here we only saw maintenance staff, never a park ranger. We camped at Wellesley Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Looking for great firewood, bait or the fish that everyone hangs from their awning? Stop at Woody's just before the park entrance, plenty of room to park your car, truck or motorhome. Craft beer and brick oven pizzas? Wood Boat Brewery in Clayton is your place. Tour of the 1,000 islands? Uncle Sam's Boat tours, do the two nation tour.

Campsites are a little closer together than some State parks but adequate. The real payoff is the St. Laurence. If you kayak or canoe and have not paddled the crystal clear water of the Thousand Islands, you are missing out on something spectacular. We stayed at this state park in the Thousand Islands area. It is a large state park but well maintained. They are upgrading some of their camping loops and buildings--next year they will have a new camp store. The dump stations were recently redone and very nice. We walked in and were given several available sites and allowed to check them out before we decided. We stayed in Loop C. We had electric. About half of the sites are in full sun with little shade. The restrooms/showers were nice. We wanted to take a tour of the Thousand Islands and Boldt Castle and Clayton Island Tours makes a pick up at the marina in the state park. It was very convenient not to have to leave the state park. The price per night includes a $15 base fee, a $6 electric fee, a $5.00 fee for being a non-resident and a $2.75 fee for walk-in. We camped at Wellesley Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This enormous, beautiful New York state park in the 1000 Islands region is located on the same island as the bridge to Canada, though you would never know it while you are in the park. Most of the 6 camping areas were closed when we were there, the park closed for the winter a week later. Our campsite was a few yards from the St. Lawrence River and some of the many islands that give the region its name. There are informal put-in spots for canoes and kayaks throughout the campground. It was several miles from our campsite to the main entrance, and miles beyond that to a town. I wouldn’t suggest using it as a staging point for touring the region, but there is plenty to do in the campground, so you may not need to leave. We were here for only one rainy night, and will definitely return here again to enjoy all that this wonderful park has to offer. We camped at Wellesley Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Stayed on the Heron Loop, the newest of the campsite loops at WISP. (As others have noted, the full-hookup Fox Loop is scheduled for substantial upgrades during the fall of 2014.) The Heron loop appears to be designed for RV/trailer camping; all sites have 30 amp electrical service, are generously sized, and have gravel laid down for your camper. The bathroom/shower house is new, and is based on the same design as other recently installed facilities at Gilbert Lake State Park and Westcott Beach State Park. The camp store was poorly stocked at the time we visited; we were told that was because it is being torn down and replaced during the fall of 2014. The swimming area is fairly small, given the size of the park overall. WISP is great if you are in a position to partake in activities at the park, such as the Minna Anthony Common nature center, the marina, the golf course, the swimming area, or the hiking trails in the campground. It's less effective as a 'home base' for 1000 Islands activities - anything else you might want to do (aside from visiting Fineview) requires crossing the 1000 Islands Bridge, meaning a $2.75 toll every time you return to the park, and lots of additional time driving back and forth to Clayton or Alexandria Bay. During August of 2014, Clayton Island Boat Tours stopped serving WISP due to a dispute over how the ferries were docking at the marina - as of 8/30, there was no word on any resolution to this. Please keep this in mind if you were counting on taking one of their tours from WISP. We camped at Wellesley Island State Park in a Travel Trailer.
