This park is convenient to downtown Asheville, Blue Ridge Parkway, Breweries (especially Sierra Nevada) and all Asheville has to offer. It is secluded, has great hiking, some fishing & a friendly staff. We stayed on Site #1 on the Big John loop. It WAS NOT PRIVATE. The campground host’s RV was about 25’ from our awning and the site behind us was about 25’ behind us. The showers were heavily used but relatively clean. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

The roads are narrow and winding into the park with a few low limbs scraping the coach. Easy check-in. Very private spots with dense trees cover making any TV reception impossible. Our site was long and very spacious. We needed to use blocks to get our rig level. The bathrooms and showers were very clean and nice although there were just 2 of each for the loop so sometimes there was a short wait. Our site had full hook-ups so we just used our own facilities. Some of the sites appeared to be smaller, tighter and not as level as ours. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Very nice area. Our site , #57 quite large. So wooded could not get complete satellite signal but OK. Was scheduled for site #5 but was upgraded at no charge because camper was unable to leave as scheduled due to vehicle problems. Told at check in that there had been recent bear sightings so told not to leave food out. Beautiful park. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

We enjoyed our stay @ Lake Powhatan. Very green & lush, lovely lake w new pier, relative privacy, dog friendly, quiet & peaceful. The stay gave us access to wonderful Asheville & surrounds. Will return. Couldn't have enjoyed it more. Tip: if you think you may want to extend your stay, reserve longer rather than try to add days @ last minute. Day after reservation stays are "first come first served" as well as booked off site. Even if camp hosts want to accommodate you, they can't. Just book extra if you might need/want more time. Thanks. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Wonderful wooded park. The amenities lean toward tent camping, as they should. Large RVs are accommodated but not catered to. Well maintained and convenient to all that is Asheville. There are many trails and opportunities for woodland adventures. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Level roads and large, level campsites. Easy to get in. Plenty of water spigots to fill your holding tanks (we camped at a site with no hookups). The campground is very well maintained. Staff was out cleaning up almost immediately after campers left, including raking the gravel. Lots to do within the park, and it's close to Asheville as well. Lots of mountain bikers and nearby trailheads. We stayed for 3 nights and will definitely be back. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This is a National Forest and the area is beautiful but the roads are very hilly, narrow, winding! Make sure your vehicle is up to taking on these steep roads. We made it with our pickup and 32 ft travel trailer, you just have to go slow & easy. Backing into our site, #44, was a little tough with posts etc in the way, but we finally got it. The site was asphalt & fairly level. The park hosts/rangers make rounds alot. Sewer connection was all the way in the back so we had to go buy an extension (since our sewer outlet is located mid-camper, not at the back). No cable or internet; AT&T was pretty non-existent the 1st day but got a little better. TV stations were only a few local w/antenna & they break-up sometimes. Our site backed up to the woods which was really nice; had many hiking paths. There's lots of room between sites and trees all around. Cost is usually:$22 per night, then an additional $9.oo per day for full hook-ups for a total of $31.00 per night. We used our National Park Senior pass so we got a discount of $11.00 per day. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The Biltmore estate is a must-see (20-30 min drive). If you like breweries, Asheville is full of them as well as lots of nice restaurants. Parking around the action (where all the breweries & restaurants are) can be challenging. We did a City Comedy tour with LaZoom which was a fun way to learn about the city.

The utilities weee placed well and worked as expected. The site was plenty long enough for our 35' and we had room for the car on the drive. The dolly was beside the RV. There is a nice table and fire pit on site. Our site needed boards under our front wheels to help level without causing the front tires to be off the ground. It's very quiet and relatively private. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Spent the weekend here in order to be close to Biltmore and Asheville. Beautiful park with very friendly, helpful staff. Sites are spacious and wooded. Some could be tight for large rigs, but our 28' Airstream fit just fine. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely return again! Overall Rating:

Beautiful, heavily forested campground in the Pisgah National Forest. We stayed in site 36 which was a long, fairly level site but a bit of a challenge to back into due to trees and posts surrounding the water hydrant. Our site was FHU with excellent water pressure. Verizon signal was mostly non-existent within the campground. The Hardtimes Loop and Bent Creek Loop where closed while we were there, so I could not rate the sites. The Lakeside Loop sites (where we were) were all asphalt with a fire ring and concrete picnic table. In my opinion, site 36A (right next to us) was the best site in this loop, having the most privacy and the easiest site to back into and get out of. A few other sites in this loop are more difficult to get out of due to the posts surrounding the water hydrants (one camper had to dig one of the posts up to get out of his site). Big John Loop sites were all gravel, but smaller, and many sites were very unlevel so I wouldn't recommend this loop for larger rigs (although there were one or two in there). There are low hanging branches on the road leading into (and within) the park, one of which took out our antenna on the way in. Also, the road coming into the park is narrow and has two blind curves on it, so take it slow. There are miles of fantastic hiking and biking trails in and around the park, along with a beach/swimming area (closed while we were there) and a long fishing pier complete with rod holders. Restroom/shower area was spotlessly clean, but there are only two toilets/showers for each loop. Dump station is at the back of the park and looks to be easy in/out (although we didn't use it). There is no campsite store onsite, but they do sell ice and firewood. We were able to get a few OTA channels (even with our broken antenna). Workers were nice and helpful, and cleaned sites thoroughly almost immediately after someone left. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Ingles grocery store is less than four miles away. We were able to get propane from Tractor Supply nearby. This campground is in a great location for exploring waterfalls and the Biltmore Estate (which gives a 10% military/veteran discount off of everything including admission and purchases). If you go, get the audio guide as it's well worth the extra $10.

Narrow, winding, hilly road into the park with a few low limbs scraping the coach. Easy check-in. Recommend unhooking the tow car at the entrance as the interior roads are hilly and winding. Dense tree cover so no satellite reception possible. We received a few over the air channels, mainly NPR. Very private sites with large sitting areas. Our site was long and level. The bathrooms and showers were very clean and nice although there were just 2 of each for the loop so sometimes there was a short wait. Our site had electric service (50 amps) only, no water or sewer although there were several places to fill tanks and the one dump station was adequate with water hose to flush black tank. Some sites have full hook-ups. However a large number of sites appear to be for small units and some appeared unlevel. There is a short drive to restaurants, groceries, etc. and a outlet mall not far away. IMO although nice not a place for larger rigs. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

The campground is one of my favorites. The Lake Loop has paved pads, the other loops have gravel pads. Some sites have sewer hookups as well as electric and water. Sufficient privacy between sites, bathhouse convenient to all sites and very clean. Camp hosts are abundant, helpful and pleasant. Very poor cell service with Verizon, and absolutely no Hotspot use here. Lots of bike trails nearby and Blue Ridge Parkway very near. Fishing is allowed in the lake. Swimming only at beach area. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

What a pleasant campground this is. While near all major attractions in the Asheville, NC area, the camping experience is what you would expect in the Pisgah National Forrest...quiet, relaxed and in an environment of beautiful hardwood and pine forest surrounded by mountain views at the small nearby fishing and swimming lake. The roads into and out of the campground were easy to navigate and the campground roads are very good. Our site was fairly easy to back into and most other sites appeared likewise. The check in process was a breeze at the campground gate. Our site was mostly level with one block to help. The site was long but a little narrower than most other sites and had plenty of nice shade which only allowed us to see one other camper. The pad was asphalt with a nice but small area to the side with a fixed picnic table, fire ring with grill, and a lantern post. As our site was somewhat narrow, the fire ring was placed close to our awning which limited a fire to a small size. We stayed in the Lakeside Loop which has mostly full hookups. The hookups were excellent...worked well and placed properly. I checked out the bath houses which are among the nicest I have seen. The bath houses have two individual private bathrooms with sink and toilet and two individual private showers. They were cleaned twice per day and always seemed to shine. The campground volunteers were very friendly and actually cleaned out the fire pits, blew off leaves around the campsite and raked the small gravel in the outside living area. If you need great communications with the outside world, don't expect it here. But then what can you expect in a national forest in the mountains? You can run down the road for 5 minutes or so and have great cell phone service, just not at your site. Overall Lake Powhatan is a great place to camp with good hiking trails, bike trails, small fishing and swimming lake and yet close to all the attractions that the Asheville area has to offer. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed here for 2 nights en route to the Smokies. We wanted a nice home base to enjoy the amazing restaurants in Asheville. Based on the reviews, I thought this would be a nice, clean place. We were more than pleasantly surprised. We will be returning just to stay here, not as a stopover on our way to somewhere else. This park is beautiful! Spots are very spacious. Mountain biking trails are everywhere. There is a beach area for kids to play in the lake. The lake is rather small, more of a large pond. But, this is a very private, woodsy, beautiful place to camp. I'll definitely be back soon. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.
