The campground is one of my favorites. The Lake Loop has paved pads, the other loops have gravel pads. Some sites have sewer hookups as well as electric and water. Sufficient privacy between sites, bathhouse convenient to all sites and very clean. Camp hosts are abundant, helpful and pleasant. Very poor cell service with Verizon, and absolutely no Hotspot use here. Lots of bike trails nearby and Blue Ridge Parkway very near. Fishing is allowed in the lake. Swimming only at beach area. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Narrow, winding, hilly road into the park with a few low limbs scraping the coach. Easy check-in. Recommend unhooking the tow car at the entrance as the interior roads are hilly and winding. Dense tree cover so no satellite reception possible. We received a few over the air channels, mainly NPR. Very private sites with large sitting areas. Our site was long and level. The bathrooms and showers were very clean and nice although there were just 2 of each for the loop so sometimes there was a short wait. Our site had electric service (50 amps) only, no water or sewer although there were several places to fill tanks and the one dump station was adequate with water hose to flush black tank. Some sites have full hook-ups. However a large number of sites appear to be for small units and some appeared unlevel. There is a short drive to restaurants, groceries, etc. and a outlet mall not far away. IMO although nice not a place for larger rigs. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

What a pleasant campground this is. While near all major attractions in the Asheville, NC area, the camping experience is what you would expect in the Pisgah National Forrest...quiet, relaxed and in an environment of beautiful hardwood and pine forest surrounded by mountain views at the small nearby fishing and swimming lake. The roads into and out of the campground were easy to navigate and the campground roads are very good. Our site was fairly easy to back into and most other sites appeared likewise. The check in process was a breeze at the campground gate. Our site was mostly level with one block to help. The site was long but a little narrower than most other sites and had plenty of nice shade which only allowed us to see one other camper. The pad was asphalt with a nice but small area to the side with a fixed picnic table, fire ring with grill, and a lantern post. As our site was somewhat narrow, the fire ring was placed close to our awning which limited a fire to a small size. We stayed in the Lakeside Loop which has mostly full hookups. The hookups were excellent...worked well and placed properly. I checked out the bath houses which are among the nicest I have seen. The bath houses have two individual private bathrooms with sink and toilet and two individual private showers. They were cleaned twice per day and always seemed to shine. The campground volunteers were very friendly and actually cleaned out the fire pits, blew off leaves around the campsite and raked the small gravel in the outside living area. If you need great communications with the outside world, don't expect it here. But then what can you expect in a national forest in the mountains? You can run down the road for 5 minutes or so and have great cell phone service, just not at your site. Overall Lake Powhatan is a great place to camp with good hiking trails, bike trails, small fishing and swimming lake and yet close to all the attractions that the Asheville area has to offer. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Near the park is the NC ABORETUM and entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Asheville is definately a destination city with great restaurants, museums, craft shops and breweries and plenty of natural areas to explore in the region.

We stayed here for 2 nights en route to the Smokies. We wanted a nice home base to enjoy the amazing restaurants in Asheville. Based on the reviews, I thought this would be a nice, clean place. We were more than pleasantly surprised. We will be returning just to stay here, not as a stopover on our way to somewhere else. This park is beautiful! Spots are very spacious. Mountain biking trails are everywhere. There is a beach area for kids to play in the lake. The lake is rather small, more of a large pond. But, this is a very private, woodsy, beautiful place to camp. I'll definitely be back soon. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Wow. What a place! Paved roads and sites, tons of room between sites, beautiful lake. Many hiking and mountain bike trails nearby. Lots of trees and low foliage makes you feel like you are the only ones there! The staff was very friendly. Limited cell phone and data access on Verizon, but who cares when it's this nice! The only downside were the that the trees on the road into the park ware a bit low to clear our 12'8" motorhome, so it was was slow going to get there. It rained before we left, so the low rain-soaked branches made getting out even slower. There wasn't much traffic so a bit of weaving and/or slowing way down prevented any damage. The low cost and beauty of the site more than made up for that inconvenience. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Very impressive public campground that is very close to Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The facilities were excellent, modern, clean and well maintained. My site was a full hook-up, paved pad that was level, well spaced from other sites, and had plenty of room. All hook-ups worked as expected. Only drawback for this campground is very poor cell service. While I only stayed here for an overnight, I would like to return for a longer visit. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed here for a week while visiting a friend in nearby Asheville. We had one of the full hookup sites on the Lake Side Loop, and really enjoyed the peace and quiet here. A few other sites were partly visible from our large, deep back-in site, and the foliage provided quite a bit of privacy. The Verizon cell service was very weak in this loop, but our MaxAmp RV booster amplifier gave us a solid voice and data signal inside our motorhome with good speeds. Most sites in this loop have little to no satellite access, but we were on site #38 where we had a clear view of the Dish eastern arc satellites by placing our portable dish near the road. The Dish western arc and DirecTV satellites would have been challenging to receive here. We didn't try to receive the OTA stations since we had them on satellite. The utilities are well placed, and our site was paved with blacktop for the driving lane, with small gravel in the picnic table and fire ring area. The campground hosts tour the loop regularly, and the sites are checked and cleaned when a guest departs. The private bathrooms and showers are checked and cleaned regularly as well. All in all, we were very pleased with our stay here, and would very much like to return the next time we're in the area. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There are more restaurants and stores in nearby Asheville than I could possibly list. We were particularly pleased with the meal we had at the Harbor Inn seafood restaurant though. It's only about 4 miles from the campground. For Waffle House fans, there's one about 5 miles away.

This is a very nice campground very convenient to the Biltmore Estate. Shady & quiet, and dark at night; friendly courteous hosts. Over the air TV extremely limited (One major network), satellite unavailable due to tree cover. WiFi is basically non-existent due to VERY limited cell coverage and no WiFi in the park. Great park for hiking swimming & mountain biking. Occasional children activities provided. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Great place to stay while visiting the Asheville area. We had a site in the only loop that offers full hook-ups. It was asphalt, fairly level and private. Over the air TV was limited and Wi-Fi almost not existent using our smartphone as a hotspot. We were in the area to see Biltmore anyway so it was not that big of a deal. Great value with our COE 'Senior' discount. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

This is the second time we've stayed here. The first time was in April in the Big John loop which only has electric at the site. This time we stayed in the Lakeside loop which has full hookups. We had good OTA tv and cell reception in both loops. Satellite would not work well here because of the trees. The restrooms and showers are much better in the Lakeside loop plus just a short walk to the lake. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

This is one of the BEST parks we've ever stayed at and our hosts we're very helpful and so friendly. Sites can be reserved, but we, without reservations, managed to score a beautiful site (Lakeside Loop #41) for 4 days just as someone was leaving. I'm sure that isn't the norm, especially at peak times since this Rec Area is has so much to do and very close to Asheville. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Easy hike to Lake Powhatan is worth it and lots of bike trails.

Close to restaurants, outlet shopping center and gas stations on Brevard Rd. Winding narrow road to campground, some of which goes through suburbia, is a challenge, but GPS works.

A nice & very clean park where each site is cleaned after each occupant. The sites are spacious and most seemed level. The park provides easy access to Asheville which is a beautiful little city. The negatives experienced were the $9 reservation fee, low hanging branches on the entrance road as well as inside the park and all the workers and host encountered were extremely business like with no smiles or friendliness. They seemed like typical government employees with their "don't other me" attitudes. Despite this, we will return to this park should we travel this area again.
