Deerhorn Campground has been condemed and razed by Caldwell County. For many years this campground was a hangout for people wanting to party hearty. All you had to do was drive past on Brown Mountain Beach road and see the huge piles of beer cans to realize this. In all my years of camping, I don't think I've ever seen a more filthy or more disgusting campground. Thank God the county officials saw fit to eliminate this eyesore from the beautiful Wilson Creek recreation area. - elmo

The park is nice and quaint, sits pretty far back in the woods with narrow roads into and through out the park. The back section is a gravel parking lot with little if any shade, although the staff say they are working on a landscaping contract to improve this section of the park. All the sites have a concrete pad and a wooden deck, but are really close together. The one we were parked in was in good repair but the deck was right behind the tail end of the next site, thankfully it was empty. At the time we were there a lot of the amenities were closed due to weather damage, but pool and putt-putt golf were open. This park was recently purchased by Thousand Trails so the upgrades that need to be made will be coming soon. Staff is very friendly and helpful. After speaking with them and getting details on upcoming improvements this will be a very nice park in a year or so. We would stay here again. - Papabee49
Jul 2016 - $1.00
Gravel un-level. Too narrow of an area to actually use. Enough room between sites but muddy clay ditch between sites. Sorry I signed up for two weeks. Cannot recommend and would never stay again. Camp site too far back in the toolies. No cable, no internet. Only one bar on Verizon and Jet Pack has problem. - saintjamescity
Jun 2016 - $1.00
Stayed three weeks, this is a very nice RV park. Has wooden patio at most sites and near all sites are cement pads to park on. Plenty of shade in the lower section so when the temps are in the 90s it is still nice outside by the trailer. Plenty of park activities offered and a nice little pool along with a water feature for kids to play under. Roads are in fairly good condition through out the park. Verizon data signal is 4G but does struggle on some parts of the day, but is good for surfing and most of the time for streaming movies. Verizon cell is only one bar and struggles. Over all a very nice park and if back in the area we will be sure to come back here. - M5Adventures

Unfortunately this business no longer accepts RV's. They concentrate on cabin rentals and hosting affairs such as weddings and business conferences. Owner said campsites were not profitable enough and he had to cut back on staffing. Very sad as this was one of our favorite places to go and relax. - amxpress
Jun 2013 - $50.00
This is our 4th trip to this campground. Each time gets better. We had a back in site, on the creek with 30A service. There are young trees along the road which can make backing a challenge, but with a little maneuvering we made it in. The site was level. Good water pressure, fresh well water. The campground has WiFi at the sites closer to the front and at the camp store. The camp store really is a snack bar with home made sandwiches including a trout sandwich. The owners are awesome people. This campground is isolated with no cell service, cable or antenna TV. There are no planned activities for the kids. There is a swimming hole next to the clubhouse. They offer canoe trips and tubing. This is not a luxury campground, but a basic, clean, friendly, quiet, and private campground. - amxpress
Mar 2013 - $50.00
We planned a last minute trip and got a very good surprise. If you want quiet and peaceful on a mountain stream, this is it. The place has new owners in the last couple years, and they are working hard to have a quality place. All the available lots are riverfront, where you could cast from your RV steps or tie your kayak to your picnic table. The lack of a pool is no problem for us. The river was crystal clear and varied from ankle deep to a large deep pool behind the main lodge area. The place is small, quiet, and family managed. We loved it. Oh, and they had a neat clean camp store/sandwich shop with friendly staff. - Donttrvlenuf

Sep 2017 - $30.00
This campground isn't for the faint hearted. You follow a road downhill until you come to a gate. There you telephone the office. If there is no vacancy, you still have to enter to be able to turn around. The steep and gravely road is navigable, but might put many people off. That being said, this really is a wonderful campground. We parked in what was considered the overflow, so all I did was back my motorhome up about 30 feet and hook up. The owner was super friendly and the price was spot on (cash only). Plenty of space to walk the dogs. We were close to the office, so WiFi was good. Would return and would recommend to those unafraid of a rather dubious entrance. It's really worth it. - villager04
Aug 2017 - $30.00
Won't repeat previous good reviews but they are correct. This was our first visit and the dirt road down to the campground had us wondering if we made the right choice, but all was well once we got there. Nice quiet hideaway for short or longer term stays. Would definitely stay again but do make reservations. It is a small campground. - Grumpier99

Great little campground. Friendly staff and very clean grounds. Nice river out back for swimming if needed. Lots of big sites with good hook-ups. Gated campground which was nice. Very quiet, relaxing and peaceful. - Manyadventuresahead

This RV Park is an old amusement park. They have a driving range and a Putt Putt course on site. You can see the old batting cage and a go-cart track on site. Staff was friendly. Several long term campers. We spent only one night here. I would camp here again. - Bburgbrewer

Only a few 50A sites, WiFi & cable are good. Roads and sites are stone and level. Miniature golf & driving range. Great stay for a golfer. - Stan1

Jul 2017 - $35.00
Been at this campground for 10yrs. We kept it up very well and considered it home away from home. I looked at the WIFI signal strength while inside the store and it was weak so I mentioned that if they were to call the company who they had it with that they would come out and adjust to get a full signal but they said no. Being disabled we did't want to have to go to the store just to get WIFI. I did complain about the water on/off on our site, it took them yrs to put a handle on it since I was having to use pliers to shut on/off the water to our RV. Because of health problems we did not get to go up there for 2yrs in a row yet I did go, with help, and pressure washed , raked leaves and kept the grass trimmed except for one time when they sent me a letter saying the grass was too high and I went right up and took care of it. We paid yearly rates, never broke any of their rules and really enjoyed the peace and quiet of the campground since there's only fishing in the pond to do while up there and a small playground for children in front of the bath house. Our RV was on blocks and they let me know one side was leaning so I called a wrecker service to fix it but the driver had a head on wreck while on his trip there. I stayed all day waiting to get it fixed. I ended up selling our RV for dirt cheap and lost money because they charged the new owner half yrs lease for the lot too. Nice people, quiet and kept up well, just don't make the mistake I made by saying something about their WIFI. Sad that they kept my money for the whole season without refunding me the differnce once they signed over my lot to someone else. People can't help when a disabilty keeps you from going every week to relax and enjoy or else I would have jacked it up myself if I had seen it first. Wont fix their own stuff unless they simply just have to. RV sites are totally not level near the road was the main problem for the most part. - 10yr camper
Jul 2015 - $35.00
Park looks nothing like their website. Swimming area unfit for human use due to duck feses. Park must have septic issues because campers tollets were backing up.Park was pumping leaving campers smelling horrible odors. Owners were extremely unpleasent to deal with. Campers are stacked in on top of each other. This park should be shut down. - Rhonda Andrews
Apr 2013 - $25.00
While the new owners were very nice and friendly, and the April discounted price was low, the large number of seasonal units which were dirty and junky was a real turn off. - MsLucy

Very nice campground. You can choose your own site. A lot of different kinds of sites. A very nice creek, which is good for tubing or fishing, goes through the whole campground. Has a large beach area for swimming. The grounds are well kept. The only complaint is the owners are very rude but if you can overlook that then it's a great campground. - fireboy7
Jun 2014 - $35.00
This park is in an attractive destination for families seeking outdoor fun. Its remote location is not, however, suitable for over nighters and it is lacking in the usual facilities for RVers. No Verizon cell phone coverage. Friendly staff. Pretty spot. - Roger H.
Aug 2012 - $30.00
We have stayed here a few times during the week and had a great time. We hear weekends get crowded but not enough to avoid staying here. The water slide may be the fastest I've tried in a long time. Camping conditions were fine. Most good sites are backed up to Steele Creek, which you can also play in. A family friendly place that we will go back to more than once a season. Take some money. It does get pricey. - justhollerhandyman

Jul 2012 - $10.00
Mortimer Campground has changed a lot in the past year. Eight sites were closed due to flash flood danger, leaving just 11 sites open for the public. While this limits the use, the facility continues to offer wonderful, semi-rustic mountain camping. We stayed in the upper loop this year in a partially shaded site. The site was clean and offered a short trail to the creek. The restrooms and showers were very clean. They were well attended to by the campground hosts. Other campers told us about a swimming hole below a waterfall 500 yards up the creek and a great sandy beach swimming hole within walking distance. Both were enjoyed by our family. Again, we enjoyed the cool mountain nights and our camping adventure. Just a reminder, that Wilson Creek Wild and Scenic River is located nearby and the visitor center there is worth a relaxing visit. - dmaerz
Jul 2011 - $10.00
My daughter (6) and I spent the night here while picking up my son from summer camp. We stayed in a tent and enjoyed the campground. The campground is divided into two sections, the lower section is along a creek with walk-in and drive-in sites. The upper section is more open. Each section has access to water and bathhouses with flushing toilets and hot showers. The campground host was very friendly and was dutiful in maintaining the campground. There were more tents than camps while we were there. It should be noted, the roads to the campground are gravel and not in the best shape. The road in follows Wilson Creek and is a beautiful wooded canyon. - dmaerz

This is more of a park for long term campers. Only 10 back in sites for people traveling. Super low water pressure. The first night we stayed, music was blasting till way past midnight. No security to stop it but it was a DJ. Very hard to make turn in this park and back into the site. It does sit on a beautiful lake. We would never go back to this park again. We were to stay 3 days but left out after 2 days. - Steve Solomon
