We stayed in a full hookup site which was quite large with partial shade. We were able to get a sat signal (Dish) in the site. The park is nice, several hiking trails and close to Carolina Beach. About 20-30 minutes from Wilmington. We camped at Carolina Beach State Park in a Motorhome.

First time staying here since full hookup sites have been added. Had to make our reservations months in advance to get a FH site. Site was large with utilities at an appropriate location. Campground was full for Easter weekend but it was still quiet at night. The bath house was mostly clean except for one morning, I'm sure due to just a few slobs. Access to the bath house is confusing as most sites on the inner side of the loop all have trails to it but in order to avoid walking thru campsites, you may have to walk around most of the loop to find the one access trail. Lots of good seafood in the area. We camped at Carolina Beach State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Great State park not far from the ocean. We had one of the full hookup sites that are very nice. This particular site is odd shaped however. Rangers coming through frequently. Nice trails. We camped at Carolina Beach State Park in a Motorhome.

We stayed for four nights. It was $23/night plus a $12 one-time "transaction fee". This is a lovely state park with lots of space. The park has several trails and interior roads for walking and bicycling plus it boasts a nice marina and boat launch. There are many trash cans and recycle bins so there's always one nearby. Our site offered full hook-ups (50amp/water/sewer). The park does not offer wifi. We received Verizon cell and Sprint Mifi signals. We could not get DirecTV from our roof-mounted dish. I suspect you could find a sat signal with a remote dish and a little bit of effort. Our site was very long with good distance between neighbors. Three things to mention: 1. Check-in is at the marina office which means you drive through the entire park to the very end. At the end (marina area) is a good size parking lot which is primarily used for empty boat trailers. The idea is that you'll park (although no area is designated for campers), check-in, continue circling the parking lot and drive back to the campground (which you passed on the way in). Here's the catch - if the parking lot is full and if you have a big rig, you might have a hard time circling it. The lot wasn't full when we were there so we didn't have a problem but I can see drama ensuing on a busy day. I don't know why they don't check-in campers at the Visitor Center which is near the park entrance. 2. The front gate locks at 9pm - no key and no code - not our preference. If there's an emergency, it's nice to know you can get out. 3. Water pressure was intermittently low or very low. It's was never quite right but not a big issue for us. Historic Downtown Wilmington is approx 13 miles but the drive is surface streets so it takes longer than you might expect. We found the park to be very pretty and peaceful. It was easy to relax and difficult to leave. We would definitely stay here again if in the area. We camped at Carolina Beach State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Veggie Wagon is crazy expensive. For us, the items we bought weren't worth the cost. Nonetheless, it was a fun place to visit. Cyclists might try the 15 mile one-way Cross City Trail. It includes city, park and UNCW campus. It has a fair amount of stop/start due to traffic. It's not always pretty but you get in some miles and see the town. Start at James E.L. Wade Park and enjoy Donut Inn on Military Cutoff Rd. at the turn around.

Okay, no doubt about it, we would stay here again. First time camping near a beach, and this was near enough. Great park with good hiking trails, access to Cape Fear River at Marina. Had kayaks, but chose to spend time at beach and fishing off piers at Kure Beach a few miles south. Two loops in campground, with a few cabins between. Full hookup on site #004 was our choice, and had plenty of room to park, and much space between sites. Enjoyed our stay immensely and wanted to stay longer (but headed to VA for Shenandoah River). Biking only allowed on roads, not trails. But nice ride to marina and back got our exercise in. Nature lovers rejoice, as this campground displays various levels of coastal region habitats. Carnivorous plants indigenous here. STAFF was so helpful, friendly, informative. Great people at marina and park office. Be aware, park closes at 9:00 during this season (I think 10:00 pm in busy season) so you may be facing a locked gate if you return late. We camped at Carolina Beach State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Park closes at 9:00 pm (in off season) and 10:00 pm (peak seasons). Number to call after these hours should you not make it back is posted at the Marina. I had to walk in one night after fishing on pier till dark, and get help getting back in. Got a five day non-resident fishing license, and now wish I had fished harder in the Cape Fear River, rather than off pier at Kure. However, saw some great blues caught off the pier, and that kept me there. Nice picnic area near the marina.

This is a nice clean park with lots of room and trails. It is only a few blocks from the public beach access and has many walking trails. We stayed 2 nights and enjoyed ourselves. If you're looking for more of a resort type camping experience try the campground about a mile away. We camped at Carolina Beach State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a gem! We paid $15 per night with a senior discount - from out of state with no other charges. Very unusual for a state park in other states. The CG has no hookups - at least now. During our visit they were renovating approximately 15 sites. 5 of the sites have been turned into 2 room cabins with electric. 10 of the sites have been fully improved with full hook ups. Get your reservation in soon as these are outstanding sites in an outstanding location. They look like these sites will be ready by Memorial Day 2016. All the full hook sites are back in and can accommodate large rigs. All the sites in the campground are very sapcious and private. All are wooded with lots of shade. Restrooms were in reasonably good condition and showers were good. We stayed in site 62 close to the bathroom. It was very large and private. All sites are pretty much sand and leaf and tree litter. All had table and fire pit. Most sites are back ins. Reason for the 8 rating is that we noticed that due to tree placement it is difficult to get your rig in far enough so that door and awning are actually in the campsite. We managed to angle the motorhome and were able to get the awning tucked between two trees with an inch to spare each side. It was a great site. Most campers were tenting. Very quiet campground with little activity during the week. Full on the weekend. Great access to the beaches. Definitely will return. We camped at Carolina Beach State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The park is on intercoastal waterway. There is a marina but no swimming in the park. Lots of hiking in the park and easy 1 mile biking into Carolina Beach and beaches. A 9 mile trip down to the Fort Fisher is worth it. The aquarium is also there. Ferry ride to beautiful Southport is fun. Must see Wilmington is half hour from CG including the USS North Carolina WWII battleship.

We were able find a few available sites that would accommodate our 38' rig. Granted, off season. We chose site 9, which we could actually pull straight through. If you don't reserve in advance, just drive through campground, look for an unoccupied site that has a green tag. We did this with the co-pilot checking the reservation web site simultaneously to find a spot that was not reserved at all during our intended stay. System involves selecting a site, grabbing the green tag off the site marker and driving to Marina/campground office to reserve and pay. You can drive a 38-40' with toad through the campground and if you can't find anything, you can move on. I would not recommend reserving a site other than site 9 if you are 38' or larger, as that's the only one I can vouch for. Many other sites claim to be 40' or more in length, but may be difficult if not impossible to get in to with a big rig. Some other sites will work, but I didn't take inventory. Great value for the money. No hook ups but plenty of water spigots and 2 dumps. Generators permitted to run from 7 am - 11 pm. Out of courtesy for others, we didn't push the boundaries on that. Very short drive to beaches and Historic Wilmington. Constantly patrolled. Campground is hard locked all night, but rangers available on call if emergency exit needed. Just don't plan on a late night out on the town! We camped at Carolina Beach State Park in a Motorhome.

This park has nothing but a dump station and hot showers. The showers are pretty good with lots of warm to hot water. The roads are paved, the sites are gravel, and are pretty level depending on where you park. We had the place pretty much to ourselves in November. However like all NC parks, no alcohol is allowed and in November they lock the gates from 6pm till 8am. So if you're camping here, you must be back by six and if you're planning to stay, you have to get here before six. These hours change during the summer, spring, and fall. Check the (web) site for details. Verizon MiFI works fine here. Our rate reflects the senior rate. We camped at Carolina Beach State Park in a Motorhome.

Very nice campground with campsites in a wooded area which would be much appreciated during the hot summer. Acceptable shower facilities. Great proximity to Carolina Beach/Kure Beach attractions and not very far south of Wilmington. We especially liked the Fort Fisher SRA and NC Aquarium. Carolina Beach State Part is definitely organized for tents, pop-ups, and smaller RVs. Most sites are back-in with a few pull through. The bath houses were clean and accessible from most sites. The sites on the second loop provide more space and have more foliage between them for privacy. There were some noisy groups while we stayed there, but the rangers were prompt in confronting the offenders. Hiking trails around the park are clearly marked and well maintained. For 2009, the marina is closed for repair. My only complaint is that much of the forest areas underwent a controlled burn in the fall and this was not announced on the website. Otherwise, it was a wonderful campground to stay in. We camped at Carolina Beach State Park in a Tent Trailer.

This campground is better suited to tent campers than self-contained campers. The majority of sites are back-in with a minority of pull-through, and those were generally very small. Many of the sites are not level enough for a motorhome. Our motorhome is 30 feet and we got one of the few pull-through sites large enough for us (but did have to enter it backwards for the door to face the correct direction. I do not recommend anything larger than a 30 foot home at this park. This time of year there are very few people present, although on a Saturday with excellent weather the place was suddenly full for one night. The bathrooms were not ship-shape and the showers lacked any privacy whatsoever. The gate is locked from 8:00 pm to 8:00 am and can only be opened in emergencies by contacting a ranger. In spite of the limitations, this is a good campground from which to explore the Wilmington area, and for those over 62 (regardless of residency), the nightly price is only $10. Otherwise it's $15. The NC state parks are going to a reservation system starting in July. We will stay here again when we visit this area. We camped at Carolina Beach State Park in a Motorhome.

No hook-ups, many sites not very level but were decently sized; best suited for tent campers and small RV's (we have a 30 ft class A). This campground was in some disarray while we were there, probably in preparation for the summer season. Messy, unkept sites, large piles of dirt and gravel all over the place, only a handful of sites open for use. No reservations, gates hard locked at 7 pm this time of year. The bathrooms were serviceable but the showers were completely open, no privacy whatever. One dump station was open, both were easy to access. The Sugarloaf Dune trail and the Fly Trap trail were nice walks. Not a great campground but not bad and overall it worked well as a basecamp for visiting Wilmington. The Battleship North Carolina was fantastic, Fort Fisher interesting and the Fort Fisher/Southport ferry was fun. The old Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson area was also an interesting stop. We camped at Carolina Beach State Park in a Motorhome.
