Unless you plan on catching an early morning ferry to Ocracoke Island there is not much reason to stay in this park. Yes, the location is nice (beach and marsh views) with access to horseback riding and kayak rentals. Unfortunately, the state of the campground leaves much to be desired. After checking in at Sharkys we were told that we would not be able to make the turn in the park to get to our assigned site #56 (premium with marsh view), so instead we were directed to basically drive all around the other sites but be careful to avoid certain sections that were so muddy that we might get stuck. On finally arriving to site 56 it was so rutted that I would not take a chance on getting stuck in it so I chose adjacent site #55. Sewer hookup at back of site, required extra long hose, electric pedestal and water spigots appear new. While there watched another camper trying back in a small travel trailer to site 53 and he buried his back wheels to the axle, fortunately another camper with a dually was able to get him out. The center section of the park had numerous RV's that have obviously been there for a very long time, some overrun with junk. Fortunately we arrived with a full tank of fresh water as the park water is unusable, it is brown and has a terrible odor. We certainly would not drink it. We had initially booked and paid for 5 nights up front but left after only 4 nights. We camped at Cedar Island RV Park (formerly Driftwood Motel Restaurant & Campground in a Motorhome.

Thank you for your feedback Safari Driver. If I may address some of your concerns and hopefully we can have you back at a later date. We have had over 19 inches of rain in the last 25 days prior to your stay and it has been virtually impossible to keep our pads and roads from washing out in some areas but we are working to fix them. We have a 4.5 star rating on Yelp, a 4.7 star rating on Google, 4.8 star rating for our restaurant on Google and a 4.9 rating with our awesome horseback ride on the beach. We offer golf cart, canoe and kayak rentals with amazing scenery and wildlife and one of the few places on the planet you can find 54 wild Spanish ponies and free range cattle roaming the islands. Our beach is spectacular and we provide a great escape for those who want to unplug and get back to nature. Our water is well water and does have iron, but it is tested and treated quarterly for safety. Average rainfall for August is 7.9". Please let us know how we can make your next stay better

They are in the middle of rebuilding their pullthru sites due to the storm. They are deep sand that I almost got stuck. The site was unlevel. When I attempted to level using boards my wheels only dug deeper in the sand. There is no sewer at the pullthru and the water/electric connections are on the wrong side. Excuse was that slideouts are usually on the driver side(connection side). Still have not figured that one out. Had to register at a bar down the road. They were not very friendly. Asked about laundry. Was told it was at the other end of the property. It was at the end of a run down motel behind a motel that was falling down. Not very convenient at all. Tips for other Campers:

I would not waste my money at this campground. It sits right next to the waiting area for the ferry. There is a place to park lined up for the ferry if you have a reservation. There is also a place to park lined up for the ferry if you have no reservation. This line has a few trees and picnic tables. If I had known about the free waiting lines, I would have saved my money and anxiety that was created by almost getting stuck in the sand. I would not stay at this campground again.

Hello camper19709. Thank you for your review. If we could give you an update on what has changed since your stay! All of the pull thru sites have been leveled with new gravel pads for each of the 12 spaces. a gravel road now travels the entire loop of the pull thru area which has changed the experience greatly for our customers. We actually do allow our customers to park in either direction so whichever direction gives them the best view or is most convenient is totally fine with us. Our check-in area is generally in our Visitor Center during peak season which is adjacent to our restaurant Sharky's Bar & Grill. In April we keep our RV rates down by checking them in in the restaurant. We are currently revamping our booking site so you will not even have to check in when you arrive if you have prepaid. We have 2 motel buildings on the property. One has been completely renovated and now has a brand new coin laundry room for all to use and the front motel is next to be renovated.

There are two ways into this park, either coming from the Outer Banks via the ferry; or, Route 70/Route 101 from New Bern. The later route is the one we took, and according to locals it is best to take Route 101 rather than follow Route 70 all the way in. Don't trust your GPS even if it has updated maps; rather, when in doubt follow the signs for the Cedar Island Ferry. Just bear in mind the road in is a two-lane road with no shoulder and can be interesting if the wind is blowing. The park itself is a work in progress and definitely headed in the right direction. The owner met us when we arrived and it is obvious that he is very customer oriented. This park has a wonderful location, on the water and almost the beach. Lots of wildfowl, great walking. The roads in the park are all dirt/sand and easy to navigate. There are a few trees here and there, but none are cause for concern. Everything in the park is in the progress of being upgraded, from the office to the bathrooms/showers to the sites themselves. Our site was #56 was right on the bay and was hard packed sand and perfectly level. Our utilities were right behind us and within easy reach. Even though the site was level you might want to put your jacks down, especially when the wind begins to pick up because if you don't and you are prone to sea sickness - watch out. There are no shade trees, but there is a picnic table and fire pit for each site. Make sure you bring in what you need, the only two convenience stores are Island's Choice (the only gas station also in the area) and Dollar General, one 5 minutes away, the other 20 minutes away. You can access the Outer Banks from here by using the Ocracoke ferry . We would stay here again We camped at Cedar Island RV Park (formerly Driftwood Motel Restaurant & Campground in a Motorhome.

This park has a wonderful location, on the water and almost the beach. Lots of wildfowl, great walking and of course at the Ocracoke ferry. The restaurant looks fine, staff is fine...but the showers/toilets are a total disaster; but management assures me that a complete rebuild is to be undertaken immediately, and I'm sure it will happen. When this is done the place will deserve a full four stars. We camped at Cedar Island RV Park (formerly Driftwood Motel Restaurant & Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Hi Kokopelli. We appreciate your feedback and yes our bath house was a total disaster when we took over the property. Here is what has been since your last stay. New composite decking outside, new railing and ramps for easy access. New paint, new metal roofing, new tile on the floors, all fixtures replaced, new mirrors over each sink and 2 new outdoor showers. We hope to have you back again soon!

My husband & I were here 10 years ago and called to reserve a small camper site on the bay, where we could see the beach also. To say the new owners were really nice and helpful just doesn't say enough. Once here I felt I wasn't just among new friends, I was among family. Sharky's Bar & Grill has some of the best food I've ever eaten, and their homemade tartar sauce is excellent! Homemade slaw is being made to go with the best shrimp burgers ever! There's special celebrations for so many events at Sharkys that I've lost count. This Sunday is 'Super Bowl Sunday' and being a Pat's fan I'll be there! The people who run it and work there are so polite and fun to be around. The hotel is being renovated and I get to see the progress. Being a huge Key West fan, and all of Fla. I can honestly say that this hotel rivals the best of beach hotels there. Then there's the 'Visitors Center'where you'll meet a lovely young woman, who is great to be around and very knowledgeable about the RV resort and living life 'Down East." You'll also see her at the stables alot, where she & her husband have horses and schedule taking guests on riding trails. The beaches are remarkable for they aren't crowded or commercialized where one can find seashells, go horseback riding, fish, relax, soak up the sun rays, kite surf, go boating, set up your easel and paint the lovely scenery, take the kids, grandkids & great grandbabies knowing they are safe. Got a good post office here as well! Also a laundry room! Looks like we will be staying indefinitely!! It's just that kind place! You can play pool and video games at Shaky's Bar & Grill, play the jube box, make new friends, eat a delicious meal (if you have never had a Farmer's Burger, you have to try one! 'Yummy!' You can visit the Visitor's Center where you can find gifts & souvenirs, get stamps at the post office to mail letters or postcards to send back home, go to the beach, sit on the docks and fish, Go duck hunting & fishing with very experienced guides, and just relax.

We stayed in the campground in a pull-through space as close to the beach as you could get. The views during the day and at night were truly amazing. Our only regret was not being able to stay longer. The sites were large with new utilities and hydrants, the food in the restaurant was great, restrooms were clean and the staff was very friendly. We played pool and watched bowl games in the sports bar. Our only regret was not being able to ride the horses on the beach. If you love nature and the beach this is the place to go. We walked to the end of the island on the beach and got to see a few of the wild horses grazing. Our next visit will be in the summer so we can truly enjoy the beach all day. We had a very good experience with this campground. The beach is amazing and we had the chance to see a large herd of wild horses. The park was very clean and the spaces were large and well laid out with new electric service. Views of the water were fantastic, the bathrooms were clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful. There is still work to be done before it's done so we are giving it an 8 on this trip but we will be back. We also ate dinner at Sharky's restaurant and the food was actually fantastic. We were surprised a sports bar had prime rib and fresh local flounder. We will definitely be back! I had a great visit to Cedar Island Resort RV Park this past August. The staff were extremely helpful. The views from the campground are amazing and you walk out every morning and go visit their horses. They are still working on getting the grounds fixed up but they have made some major upgrades to spaces for RVs including new water and electric. The bathhouse is also in the process of being renovated as well, but they have already done some remodeling that was a huge improvement from what it use to look like. They also have a sports bar right across the street that has great pricing and good food, and is very convenient if you aren't wanting to cook every night in your RV. Overall, I highly recommend this campground to anyone looking for a quiet and relaxing place to take a vacation. It's the perfect place to be able to catch the morning ferry. It's not nearly as bad as people made it out to be. You are able to use the restrooms in the ferry office when it's open, but there were no showers. When we were there in mid-July there were a few sites with full-hookups available, but they are limited. We brought our own water with us. There are a few full-time people there, but it wasn't a problem. It was quiet and peaceful at night. The sites were large and the lady in the motel office was very friendly and helpful. We would use it as an overnight site to catch the ferry again. We camped at Cedar Island RV Park (formerly Driftwood Motel Restaurant & Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Great place to spend the night before catching the ferry, but little more than that. The campground is clean but has no amenities (bathrooms, showers, etc) and sewer hookups are non-existent for over-nighters but a dump station is available. The nice thing about the campground is that it's less than 100 feet to the ferry and has very easy entrance and egress features. Don't plan on spending any time here; it is a good waiting place for the ferry and nothing more. If I was taking the ferry again, I would stay here. This is not a campground. It is an overnight spot to catch the ferry. It's an open, grassy, sand/dirt field with rutted roads and randomly scattered hookups. A dozen permanent RVs occupy the few sewer sites. Exercise caution when parking; there are multiple signs of prior RVs getting stuck in soft sand. Heavy overnight rains made pull-out in the morning nerve-wrackingly dicey. No cellphone service. Would not camp here again. All the sites with sewer are occupied by permanent RVs. The first 2 sites we looked at had problems with the electrical wiring. Campground is not well maintained, there was no one in the office, so we had to call a number on the Motel door to get someone to come and register us. When we told office personnel about the 2 sites that had electrical problems, he said that they had been that way for awhile. Dump station is hard to get to and was very messy when we were there. We stayed there overnight while waiting for the ferry at 7am, you could throw a rock and hit ferry toll booth. OK for over night stay but nothing to do except eat at restaurant across the street[which I thought was good, big portions]. Nothing special about grounds but if taking the ferry I would stay again.
