We stayed at Carowinds Camp Wilderness so we could visit SCarowinds (Halloween-themed setup). The campground is easy to get to off of I-77 but you will have to contend with some traffic during their busy times. The campground is clean and laid out well. It has easy access to the amusement park. The facilities looked great but we didn't have a need to use them. As nice as this campground is, the best part was the staff. They were extremely helpful with everything. They even allowed for an extended checkout on Sunday as we had to go to a wedding in Lenior. We'll definitely be back for a long weekend when we can enjoy the park more. We camped at Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Stopped here to visit family in Charlotte as it was the only campground available. Would rate it higher if our destination was the theme park but it was pricey for our use. Treed campground was partially shaded and grass had little chance to survive with cars and trucks driving and parking on it. We enjoyed a visit to the camp store and a nice clean pool that had few others since it is next door to a water park. Directly under the airport flight path for fairly continuous jet noise. Big amusement and water park next door draws most visitors. We camped at Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort in a Motorhome.

We stayed here to visit Carowinds Amusement Park so definitely worth the proximity as the campground is right next door. The showers, store/game room, pool, utilities were all top notch. We had a pull through site that was mostly dirt which was terrible when it rained. Otherwise, we loved the park, the employees and our stay. We camped at Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

They have a shuttle that transports guests to the adjacent Carowinds Amusement Park. The campground pool is actually staffed by certified lifeguards from Carolina Harbor (Carowinds Water Park) and was perfect for an afternoon swim as many campground guests tend to visit the amusement park during the day.

Overall Rating:

We came in on a Saturday morning without a reservation but they still were able to get us a site. Site was a level back-in FHU, the first two thirds paved and the last part dirt. Hook-ups were in the middle of the site and all in good working order. The site was surrounded on three sides by a five foot hill which offered some privacy and was well shaded. Picnic table and a charcoal grill are provided, no ground fires were allowed. The site did get pretty muddy after a heavy afternoon rain. It got very buggy in the evening.

Check-in was easy and staff was friendly. The office doubles as an OK stocked store and a recreation center with a nice sitting area. Nice pool with lifeguard is next to the office, and shower house is attached in the back. Showers were clean and modern. The campground offers a free shuttle to the amusement park next door. Overall a decent campground, though a bit pricey. We camped at Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Good place to stay to visit Carowinds Amusement Park and reasonably close to Charlotte. Nothing special about the campground. There is a pool with life guard. Campground roads and pads are level, paved but very narrow. Sites have old picnic tables and some have beat up grills. Space between sites are reasonable but mostly dirt so most people put down outdoor carpets/tarps by table. Pads are not swept so lots of dirt on pads. Pull through sites are not long enough for most RVs requiring cars/truck to park on grass/dirt between sites. Sites are mostly shaded. Sewer connection near road so needed 3 lengths of hose to reach. We could not get satellite coverage on assigned site but asked to move to another where we could get satellite. Good wifi - was able to stream Netflix. We camped at Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort in a Motorhome.

We camped for two nights in Camp Wilderness; the name bothered me before the booking, I was thinking of some fantasy place for camping. Fortunately it was just an RV park with normal hookups. The amusement park was just down the road but was not an issue. The roads within the park were confusing for direction and were not wide enough for passing. Sites have FHUs and paved. T-mobile was good and satellite set up was good. The staff were extremely helpful and professional. We camped at Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort in a Motorhome.

We stayed at Carowinds for what was intended to be a one night in-transit stop on our way north from Florida. Just before arriving we were notified that a pending snow storm in Virginia would make our next scheduled stop difficult at best, so we extended our stay to three nights to wait out the storm. The park is an easy on & off of nearby I-77, but there is no road noise in the park. Our pull-through site was at the end of a row, so we only had a neighbor on one side, making the site seem quite large. The site was also long enough for our coach and towed car. The electric, water, and sewer connections were well placed for our hookups, and we had a clear view for our portable satellite dish. The park does not have cable TV. The park does have free WiFi with the usual slow speeds, but our AT&T and Verizon signals were strong for our phones and Internet hotspots, so we didn't use the park WiFi. The Charlotte area offers many attractions, as well as many stores and restaurants. And the Carowinds amusement park that also owns the RV park is easily accessible via a free shuttle. Discount tickets are available at the RV park office. There is fairly frequent jet plane noise since the Charlotte-Douglas airport is fairly close by, but we didn't notice much activity from it during the night. The amusement park is close enough that we could sometimes distantly hear youngsters screaming on the rides, but only when were outside. And never loud enough to be annoying. We liked this park for an overnight stay and longer, and we expect we'll return often when we pass through the Charlotte area. We camped at Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort in a Motorhome.

Although this large, family-friendly, RV Park is located next door to Carowinds Amusement Park, it is surprisingly quiet in the park, even when the roller coasters are running. Numerous types of sites are available, pull-through or back-in, tent, or cabin. One section of the park seems to be primarily the residences of the amusement park workers. The remaining sites are for temporary guests. Within the registration office complex in a very large, very nice lobby with a fireplace and games, and a well-stocked convenience store. Check-in was efficient and very welcoming. (The RV park sells discounted tickets to the amusement park and offers a complimentary shuttle which runs all day long.) The roads and sites within the park are paved; site amenities include a picnic table and a charcoal grill. One word of caution, the levelness of sites does vary, so if you have a large coach, some sites may not work out for you. We were in a very large end site (#199), which not only was fairly level, but afforded us the use of our roof-mounted satellite dish (many of the sites are under a canopy of mature trees, thus there would be no satellite reception). Also on the property are laundry facilities, a large, seasonal pool, a beach volleyball court, and an outdoor games area. If we are ever in this area again, we would not hesitate to return to Camp Wilderness, as it is well-located for visiting Charlotte and the surrounding area, not to mention its convenience to Carowinds. We camped at Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort in a Motorhome.

Worked very well for overnight stay. Easy big rig navigation. Site was long enough that I didn't have to unhook my toad. Utilities were well placed and worked well. No cable TV, but lots of channels on antenna. Some airplane noise, but not real loud. I would stay again on a weeknight. Weekends are too expensive for an overnight stay. We stayed here on the weekend before halloween and visited Carowinds amusement park on Saturday and then went to the Carolina panthers game on Sunday. It was the perfect location for what we wanted to do. The park is clean and extremely safe. We were put over by the elderly seasonal workers and they were all very nice and gave us helpful information. I highly recommend this campground if you want to visit Charlotte or go to a Panthers game. We camped at Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Date of Stay: April, 2016 - $56.00
Overall Rating:

Overall, the value is not inclusive unless you are visiting the theme park. 56.00 per night is steep, especially when you factor in the tight location of the campsites. There is maybe 15 feet between each site, and little to no foliage for shade. The sites and access roads are very tight, for a long truck and trailer combo the "drive-through" aspect of the site we stayed in was questionable. I would recommend the outer back in sites for longer trailers. We camped at Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

We were looking for a campground close to Charlotte with full hookups and large sites, and Carowinds fit the bill perfectly. The sites were actually a little larger than I'd expected, with plenty of grass between sites and trees throughout the campground. It rained during most of our stay, and some sites were more flooded than others... in fact, the camping area of the site we were assigned was under a couple inches of water so they let us pick a different site which worked out better. The park is dog-friendly and we found plenty of places to walk ours. The campground has an RV section, tent section, and cabin section, all slightly separated from each other. It's a short drive to many stores and restaurants in the area. The free WiFi worked quite well for us, but being December the campground was mostly empty which likely contributed to the good performance. Verizon and AT&T also worked well. There was some noticeable highway noise all day long but it was not too bad. We'd stay here again when visiting Charlotte. We camped at Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The campground is literally on the NC/SC border (the state border divides Carowinds in half). Gas in SC is around 30 cents cheaper per gallon, so it pays to figure out which direction to drive when exiting the campground to fill up!

Overall Rating:

It wasn't packed as I expected it to be on a beautiful weekend in July. The campsite was a pull-through behind the check-in station, was paved, had a concrete patio and a very nice picnic table. The showers, restrooms and pool were very clean. They offer discounted tickets to Carowinds in the campground store and a shuttle every hour from open to close. This is nice since we could come back and have lunch at the camper. The food prices and parking prices at Carowinds are very expensive. That kind of made up for the campsite cost being a little steep. The staff was friendly as well. Restaurants and shopping are nearby. Very close to I-77 and Downtown Charlotte. We camped at Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort in a Travel Trailer.

This was a nice place to stay while visiting the Amusement park. The grass was very long , I walked up and asked the front desk if they could take care of it.. The next day early it was handled. It was worth the price. We camped at Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

Make no mistake, this is a run-down RV campground, not an RV Resort. At $60.00 a night we were staggered by how overpriced it was. Then again, we didn't use any of the facilities except the shower and we never went to the amusement park. If we had a bunch of kids with us and took advantage of the shuttle to the park, then maybe. Plan to be on dirt, under trees, surrounded by ants, on a fairly level pull-through site. The whole place seemed past it's prime to us. We stayed here for the weekend because we were tired of driving and this place was easy to find. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We camped at Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort in a Motorhome.
