This is a hidden gem after the beaten path. There are about 20 sites and first come, first serve. Pull in and set up then go over to the police department to pay. It is a bit isolated but the police are in and out of this park regularly. We camped at Contentnea Creekside RV & Trail Park (Temp. Closed) in a Motorhome.

Park is operated by the city. You are supposed to pay at the Police Department. When we arrived on Friday about 11am, I went to pay. Police department is locked, city hall has closed for the day. This is after numerous phone calls to try to see if they were going to have the park open, which took about 3 weeks to get an answer. I was told the rates were going to be $20 this year instead of the $10, but they assured me a spot and took a "reservation". We just took a spot when we got here as there wasn't anybody else. I finally found a police officer who helped me out.... We camped at Contentnea Creekside RV & Trail Park (Temp. Closed) in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This is a beautiful, well maintained Campground, very peaceful, right on the Contentnea river. The park is operated by the local police department and is very secure. I wish we could have stayed longer. The walking trail around the grounds is nice. It was a little confusing when we first got here. We thought one of the walking trails was an interior road. Try that in a 46 foot 5th wheel on a stormy day. We camped at Contentnea Creekside RV & Trail Park (Temp. Closed) in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a small park in a small town. There are 10 full hookup sites with 50 amps. The road is paved and the sites are grass/gravel. There is a trailer with 3 air conditioned bathrooms and 2 outside shower stalls. The park is run by the city and you pay at the police department. We set up and drove the car to the police department, which was a short distance away. The police are in and out of the park on a regular basis. Again, there are no amenities but there is total peace and quiet. There are benches, tables and fire pits at each site. Our antenna picked up about 25 channels. We crossed a railroad track near the entrance but never heard a train in our 4 day stay. The traffic in and out of the park is very light, mostly people fishing in the river next to the park. This the best campground that we found in this area. We would stay here again. We camped at Contentnea Creekside RV & Trail Park (Temp. Closed) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Grifton had a very small downtown area. There are some fast food chains. I don't recall any restaurants. Kinston is about 20 minutes south on Hwy 11 and Greenville about the same distance to the north.

Overall Rating:

We stayed just one night with friend that just bought a "new" used 5th wheel. We paid our $10.00 per site at the police department across the creek and was told to just pick whatever sites we wanted. They place was spotless and the sites were spacious. There were some sites that had updated fire rings with benches and new picnic tables but they were taken. There were large trash cans to place the trash. From what another camper told us, if you pay $5.00 they send someone to unlock the restroom for you. Not sure if that was for the entire stay or just the one time, but we didn't need it. Not much to do around the area but a nice place just to camp. We camped at Contentnea Creekside RV & Trail Park (Temp. Closed) in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This city owned campground is a result of Hurricane Floyd in 1999. It flooded a section next to the Contentnea Creek and the homes could not be rebuilt. The city decided to turn the area into an RV park with walking trails and a play ground. Sounds like a good idea, right? Unfortunately, they need a little more attention to get it right. There are no bath houses, just air conditioned toilets. They were a mess and not clean, being open to the public. The campground is isolated from the rest of the town and it is very peaceful and tranquil. We listened to the birds while sitting outside. No traffic noise. There were four other RV's on site, long term with construction workers. Luckily, it was a holiday weekend and they all went home. We were the only occupied RV in the campground. Lot's of open space to run the dog. No garbage cans, though. We had to use the cans belonging to the long term guys. The site was level and open. Plenty of shade from large trees, but yet open spots to set up a satellite dish. We were able to pick up two local TV stations on our antenna. Good water pressure. No pool, no 50 Amp service, no cable, no wi-fi. This is a very basic campground that is quiet, on a river, and very cheap. We had to go to the police station to check in. A policeman escorted us to our site, a lot better than following a golf cart with a campworker driving. We camped at Contentnea Creekside RV & Trail Park (Temp. Closed) in a Fifth Wheel.
