If you are willing to boondock, the NPS campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway is a good bet for you. The campground has a few "reserve ahead" sites and a few first come, first served sites. We were there at the start of the long July 4 weekend, and did not have a problem finding a site. About half of the sites were in use. Our site was mostly level, and easy to back into. The camp host was very helpful. There is a 1 mile (each way) hike from the campground through woods and meadows to the Beringer Cabin. There is a much shorter (though less interesting) drive to the cabin. We camped at Doughton Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Absolutely gorgeous country. Heavily forested. Verdant green, rolling hills, picturesque farms and valleys wherever you look. Silent: no road noise, no trains. Colder than we realized in May: thunder, hail and rain showers.

Typical older NPS campground. Only A loop has sites big enough for RVs, only two were close to our size, 43'. (B and C loops were closed and might not open this year according to the host).

No hookups, no showers. Water is available and there is a dump station. The sites are narrow but not close together, narrow roads are paved. No AT&T or OTA TV, told Verizon works fine.

Lots of ticks in the woods, so inspect dogs and people constantly. We camped at Doughton Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Roughly 10 miles to Sparta, NC for shopping. Don't miss Parkway Craft Center at the Cone Manor House.

We had to park our car in an unoccupied site becasue our site was too short for both vehicles.

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $19.00
Overall Rating:

This is one of the old-fashioned National Park campgrounds that seems like it was created around the time that the Blue Ridge Parkway was built after the Great Depression. The roads and the campsites are narrow with no overflow parking, which means you must be able to fit your entire camping rig in the length of the driveway. It is beautiful, it is quiet (unless your neighbors are running a generator), and there are lovely places to hike. There was some cell phone voice and data coverage and a campground host. Some of the sites are reservable, while others are not. We were able to fit our 30' fifth wheel in a larger pull-through spot by backing into it. However, many of the sites would not accommodate our size or our slides. After a glass of wine and a beer, it was a beautiful place to stay and listen to the birds. There are not many services, but for $19/night it was worth it. We camped at Doughton Park in a Fifth Wheel.
