The park was nearly empty when we were there...out of 20 campsites, only one other one was occupied. But it felt safe and we loved our time here. Spent 4 days just being outside, exploring the park and trails, and enjoying a little solitude in nature. No playground for kids, but they had fun exploring the surrounding woods. The park office has a small museum about the area that's entertaining and informative. The only drawbacks were no laundry facilities and the long drive into town for groceries. We camped at New River State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

We live close by to this park and frequently go here for the night for some fun family time. This park is a gem as far as state parks are concerned. The sites are well maintained and very spacious. Each site offers a large patio area with a picnic table and a fire ring. The park itself is lovely and a great option for those looking for relaxing hikes, canoeing, and fishing. I can't think of anywhere else that offers more for your money. We camped at New River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Ashe county is earning fame for being the "coolest corner" of the state. There is so much to do here all year long. Be sure to venture the short distance to West Jefferson. It's a lovely quaint town that's been revitalized and now offers lots of great shops and art galleries. Don't miss a trip to Ashe County cheese where you can see cheese made and take home delicious samples from NC's only cheese plant.

This is one the nicest State Parks we've visited. As others have stated it's small. It's very nicely maintained. Our Camp Host was friendly. It's one of the few State Parks we've stayed at with full hook up. Gorgeous area. There is some road noise from 221 if you're near the top of the park but it wasn't terrible. Certainly the nicest bathhouse I've seen at State Park. It's an easy drive down to a nice day area by the river. We'll be back! We camped at New River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Just an FYI- The sites that aren't full hook up are electric only. You will need to fill your fresh water tank on the way in to the campground. Out friends found that out after they set up.

Overall Rating:

One of the cleanest and best maintained state parks we have ever visited. We reported an issue with the bathroom water heater and they had a crew working on it within hours.

The park staff and the camp host were friendly and helpful.

We tubed the New River twice and kayaked it while there, and also drove over to Stone Mountain State Park to hike the upper loop trail. We camped at New River State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Great state park up in the mountains: small, clean, well kept and VERY friendly staff. One thing you need to be aware of is that some of the sites that have electric are constructed backwards, meaning that the picnic table, fire pit, tent pad, etc are on the "driver-side" so if you have a trailer that can be an issue. We camped at New River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

New River is a beautiful little state park in the mountains, about 15 minutes from the quaint little town of West Jefferson. The park is small, with only about 20 total sites. A limited number of sites have full hookups and are big rig friendly. I had no problem with a long bed truck towing a 39' fifth wheel. The approaches to the park on 221 are also big rig friendly, though going slow is recommended the last few miles from Jefferson northbound on US 221.

The park has about 3 miles of very nice hiking trails, as well as a canoe launch and some day use areas along the New River. Very scenic. There is also a small museum and interpretive center at the park office that is worth a visit. The facilities are all in great shape and the bathhouse was immaculate (and heated!).

Plan to visit West Jefferson's downtown area for shopping and a number of eateries, including a nice brew pub. Also, the drive up Mt Jefferson is well worth it for some gorgeous views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. A bit longer drive (one hour) will get you to Stone Mountain State Park, which is also a must see.

Overall, this is a great little park if you are looking for somewhere to just unwind and maybe do a little bit of hiking and sightseeing. We camped at New River State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This campground is fairly new and the trees planted have just started to grow. This will be a very nice campground when it has some age on it. Some sites have full hook ups and others have water and power only with an easy to get to, dump station. Not a whole lot to do in the area as far as shopping etc., but that is not my thing lots of site seeing the country side and tubbing the river. We had a very nice stay quiet nights. The roads are driveable just be careful lots of curves not many inclines or down slopes. I pull a 30 footer with a four door, long bed dully and had no problems with roads or the campground. We camped at New River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Beautiful park at 3000' elevation. Only 12 miles from West Jefferson where there is a WalMart, Lowes, and other grocery stores. All sites have electric, but water and sewer only at a few sites. The NC Parks website indicates facilities by site. We stayed a week and plan to go back. Price reflects a senior discount. Highway 221 is narrow and many curves, so slow is the way to go. We camped at New River State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

While we toured the RV campground (very nice), we stayed in the tenting area along the New River. The facilities were cleaned twice each day and were very well maintained. The staff, rangers, and volunteers were very friendly and visible throughout our visit. The site was large with privacy from neighboring sites. There was a 200 yard walk to the tent sites, but wheelbarrows were provided to haul gear. The visitor center had a nice informational display and movie. The sites had direct access to the New River. This was one of the cleanest rivers I have ever visited! We stayed with another family and the children had a great time, as did the adults. While we were there, the blackberries were available for picking and we had a wonderful cobbler. Overall, we highly recommend New River State Park at the 221 Access. We camped at New River State Park in a Tent.
