Location, Location, Location. That's the big deal for us at this RV Park. It is right on the Atlantic Ocean. A short walk and you are on the beach. The place is old and spaces are tight. Lots of long-term summer residents. Many are fisher people who haul their tackle and gear out to the beach and spend the morning and evening hours. Friendly folk. The lady who checks you in and runs the place is a dear. Showers and toilets are tight and old, but everything works and the water is good and plentiful. Sewer hookup is the rear of your site and was a long run from our RV port. The nice rustic park. We camped at Surf City Family Campground in a Motorhome.

This is my second review of this campground as it was our second time staying with them. We love the place so this probably will not be my last review of it either! Surf City Family Campground still isn't a place to visit if you're worried about exclusivity or have issues with folks spending the night in their car/truck in order to get an extra day of fishing in. They do an excellent job of managing the facilities despite the seemingly last-minute nature of a lot of their guests, and anyone I've ever had a conversation with while staying there was more than pleasant. Again, it's not a resort - don't expect it to be. You will be relatively close to your neighbors. You probably won't be having a campfire. But remember, you're not tucked into the woods, you're at the beach, so put on your flip-flops, pack a cooler full of beverages (no glass, please!) and enjoy Topsail Island, its beaches and small-town atmosphere. We camped at Surf City Family Campground in a Motorhome.

Do visit The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center on the mainland if you're in town while they're open and be mindful of the turtle nests!

As others have said, if you're looking for a resort-style experience, this is not the campground for you. If you're opposed to seeing other RVs that have some age to them, this is not the campground for you.

However, if you're looking for a quaint, clean park with direct access to the beach, then look no further. What this park lacks in amenities it more than makes up for in charm and relaxation. Fishing poles and flip flops are the order of the day here.

The park itself is relatively small and they do pack folks in tight. Our particular site had a picnic table and room for our awning and that was about it. It's no tighter than your average KOA, but the thing to remember here is that you're here to go to the beach, visit the local tourist traps, eat seafood and generally enjoy everything except your RV. We had ample room to grill and eat, sit outside and chat with neighbors while listening to the waves in the evenings.

The park is primarily flat and sandy but fairly well maintained. Our site was not paved but level and solid enough. There is a game room that contains a few pool tables and an air hockey table. The office contains a small store that has the basic stuff one might expect to see at a campground store. The people here are super friendly, helpful and love nothing more than to sit on the porch and BS for hours. If you need ideas on where to go eat or what to go see, the office is probably the best place to start.

I do realize that $45 per night may not seem like a value to some, especially when one realizes that there's no pool, no dog park, and no playground, but if you've ever spent a week on Topsail Island in an oceanside rental house, you'll immediately realize that $45 per night is a steal. Again, you're here for the beach, not the playground. The real playground is just over the dunes and it's the best playground I could imagine for kids and their parents alike.

Oh, Verizon cell service works just fine here. We camped at Surf City Family Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

If gift shops are your thing, check out Topsail Island Trading Company on N New River Drive almost to the main intersection on the island. The Gift Basket on the south end of the island also has some neat stuff. Gallagher's is a neat locals watering hole a few minutes south of the park. For seafood, check out the Crab Pot just before you cross over the swing bridge back to the mainland. Their reviews seem somewhat mixed, but if you stick to seafood, we've had good luck.

This campground is on the ocean side which is nice. We were there in the off-season so it was not crowded. Full service and the WI FI worked very well which is not always the case. Our site was sand/grass, sunny/open, and had a picnic table. We camped at Surf City Family Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We spent six days here, and selected this campground due to the close proximity to the ocean. We were very pleased. This is not a luxury campground, nor does it advertise itself as one. The "9" rating is comparing this campground to how it is advertised. It you are expecting a resort, this isn't for you. If you want friendly folks, relaxing atmosphere, with the Atlantic Ocean is just a few hundred yards from your camper...this is for you. The owners are very friendly, as are the fellow campers. We are new at the camping lifestyle, so I was surprised to see someone "camping" in his car, but to each his own, I guess. There are quite a few "seasonal" sites here, which I found to be a bonus...since these folks were very knowledgable about the area. The camp store provided us with a few staples that we ran out of, which was very nice, at reasonable prices. Parking is tight, but doable. The staff will help park the trailers if spaces are too tight, which I did not realize until after we had parked. Topsail Island is a great place. Not over populated like so many others. And, it's dog friendly all hours, 365 days of the year. We camped at Surf City Family Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Still a very nice park with very friendly owners. Sites are small but can accommodate larger RVs. The best things about this park are the friendly people, owners, and the great beach, just over the dunes. This is our second time at this park and will be back again. We camped at Surf City Family Campground in a Motorhome.

If you're looking for a campground on the beach then this is the place for you. We had a spot very close to the dunes with direct ocean access. We could hear the waves crashing while sitting inside our camper. If you're looking for a roomy campground with lots of amenities then you should look elsewhere. This isn't the typical campground that we look for because the sites are very close together and people are on top of each other, but the beach access make it worthwhile. The couple that runs the place is very nice and helpful. We camped at Surf City Family Campground in a Motorhome.

This was a very nice and small park. The campers are packed on one another but the ocean access makes it worth while. Some longer camper rigs hang out into the CG road but do not pose any problems. The owners are as nice as they come. When we had to cut our stay short they offered a refund of the unused time. I would not accept the entire amount as it was not their fault we had to leave. The park is composed of half seasonal people and half travelers. There is not much here for children as the playground is a backyard swing set that looks like it does not get used much. There was a pool table and a small campground store with basic items. If you looking for 100% beach and not a lot of people this is the place to go because the beach is uncrowded and there is not much going on in the surrounding area. We camped at Surf City Family Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Exactly what we wanted when we were looking for a family oriented campground. We also do not like the commercial aspect at the beach, so this fit us perfect. Our stay was during the week and we were just about the only people camping. It was wonderful. Direct access to the beach and we were able to camp close enough that we could hear the waves crashing at night. The restrooms are clean and there is a swingset and gameroom for the kids. We camped at Surf City Family Campground in a Motorhome.

While this campground is by no means fancy, it is a family friendly, fun place to enjoy the beach. You are no more than 100 yards from the beach with access at all times for swimming, surf fishing, or beachcombing. The facility is old but the owners go out of their way to make you feel welcome. If you are into fancy parks with lots of amenities, this place ain't for you, but if you like a nice, quiet place to camp on the beach, you will find it here! We camped at Surf City Family Campground in a Travel Trailer.
