The very nice and fun gal that checked us in answered all our questions and then we were escorted to our site. The laundry, bathrooms and showers are immaculate. The park is situated on a hill, so there are different levels for each site. If you take it slow any size rig can make it just fine. The gate adds another level of security. Very quiet and a stream is close by to listen too. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Road into campground is 18 to 20% grade. Difficult for towing a vehicle. Suggest you unhitch before you get off the freeway or crossover to do it first. People were rude about it when we were surprised. Difficult to unhitch the jeep. Area in front of office for a check in is on a steep incline not easy to unhitch there either Even though they believe it is. Wi-Fi is good, worked all the time but not secure. Spaces while they may be level once you get into them are extremely difficult to enter and leave with the severe drop off on the hill. We scraped our front bumper and our back bumper and hitch while trying to get in and out of the spaces. Did not check mountain top ones but not sure how you get up there without a tow truck. Is convenient to Asheville and nearby sites if traveling during tornado season because the mountains block them. We camped at Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground in a Motorhome.

Lots of art galleries and studios to visit. Biltmore was very expensive so we did not. up to you. Lots of nice antique stores with some very reasonable prices. Blue Ridge Parkway nearby also a great drive and not too far from the smoky mountains. We would come back to the area but not to this campground.

Date of Stay: February, 2017 - $52.00
Overall Rating:

We've loved this campground since our first stay. It's not a huge place and maneuvering can be somewhat intimidating due to the hills and curves, but the folks there will help you get to your site in one piece and with minimal stress. Once you're set up, you'll be rewarded with a heaping helping of peace and quiet. Road noise here is nearly non-existent. The grounds are well kept and clean and the gate at the entrance helps one feel a bit more secure in the evenings. Only a few of the sites are paved, so if that's your preferred landing pad, call ahead to ask. The sites at the top of the hill provide extraordinary views but are, unfortunately, closed during the winter (can't blame them - would hate to get stuck up there in the snow!). There are a pair of pinball machines at the main building that we normally love to dump quarters into. They too, however, are not available during the winter months. The pinball preservationist in me worries about their long-term health... There's also a horseshoe pitch that we didn't take advantage of and, I believe but cannot confirm, there's also a pool table in the main building. Our site came equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a really neat fire pit. Firewood is available at the office for $5 per generous bundle. If you happen to forget to pick up your wood prior to the office closing, the Ingles supermarket in town usually has some in the produce section. We had no problem with satellite service (the one owned by the phone company) or Verizon cell/data service. They do offer free wi-fi, which seemed passable, as well as digital cable, which we didn't use. As others have said, there is a church with a large parking lot that's normally empty and makes a great spot to disconnect your toad, should you have one. You could disconnect in the reception area of the campground but it would be tight and could slow others down. We camped at Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

While here, check out Okie Dokees Smokehouse for great BBQ (try the jalapeno hushpuppies!). Head out of the campground, go straight over I-40 and take a right at the three-way intersection. If you instead turn left, you'll find an Ingles supermarket, a post office and an Ace Hardware in a nearby shopping center. Black Mountain is a few miles east and has more dining choices and some neat local shops.

We visited Ashville to tour the Biltmore Estate during Christmas. Outstanding. And Mama Gertie's was a great place to stay - just about 10 minutes away but much nicer than the closer RV parks.

It is on a hill and it can look a little imposing when you first arrive. But the staff is so helpful and friendly and will help you get into your site. The roads are plenty wide and recently repaved. Turns require some care but are good for even the largest rigs.

Views are amazing especially from the upper parts of the campground. We camped at Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

We're on a long road trip and have stayed in dozens of campgrounds, usually choosing only CG's with excellent reviews. Mama Gertie's has great shower and laundry facilities and is spotless. The CG is on a steep hill, so the sites are terraced, providing privacy between sites. Good wifi connection, good AT&T and T-mobile reception. Would definitely return here. Stayed in one of the sites atop the hill and truly enjoyed the deck along with its' swing and patio chair set. The restroom and laundry atop the hill are literally brand new and spotless! The laundry machines are all digital and the room has a bill changer for added convenience. The entire campground is beautifully landscaped and well kept! The staff was extremely nice and helpful and even brought firewood up to our site. The entry gate requires a 4 digit number to get in and it makes the entire campground off limits unless you are registered guests. We are already planning a return trip for next fall! You will love this place guaranteed! We camped at Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground in a Motorhome.

Sites 35 & 36 are nice, but the power lines do obstruct view! If the view is important select 33 or 34. Sites 27 thru 32 are pull thru's but don't have the deck and swings. Best tip is to reserve EARLY as they are already booking heavily for Fall of 2017.

Nightly rate based on their weekly rate of $300. I don't give 10 ratings out very often! This is an awesome place. Built into the side of a mountain, the roads are very steep and the sites are terraced in places. (Not necessarily everyone's cup of tea, but large motor homes and fifth wheels made it with no problems.) The people who run it are friendly and helpful with advice on nearby Asheville, a great town to visit. The sites are cleaned up after each visitor leaves, and the whole park is immaculately clean. Their cable tv worked great, giving us lots of stations very clearly. Their web site was fine. Our Verizon signal was hit and miss. The cabins are placed away from the RVs in pretty sites next to a little mountain stream, by the way. We will definitely be back! We camped at Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground in a Motorhome.

We stayed at the top to enjoy the view. The view is truly exceptional and worth the road up and the extra expense. The top is a broad shelf carved into the side of the hill and its entirety is level. There is no shade but the grounds are well landscaped. The bathhouse is new and spotless. There is a small area for a dog walk with dog waste containers.

The entire CG was well maintained and very clean. The roads are paved and they are all fairly steep, although the sites not on top were all fairly level with plenty of shade. Just pay attention, and the roads are quite manageable. Other than that, the other reviewers covered most everything well.

We will definitely stay here again. We camped at Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There is plenty to do in the area. The Biltmore is a must visit. Asheville was settled by my old hippie friends from the 60's and in my view, is not what it used to be. Today, I find it crowded and commercial. Too bad. ("Find paradise and put up a parking lot.")

Yes, the parking is very limited. Parking our F-250 was a challenge. Go early. The Blue Ridge Parkway runs right through and the Folk Art Center should be seen. Also, Mt. Mitchell is near and worth the ride to the top.

This was our 3rd time here and our first in the premium sites with decks. The view is spectacular! No problems getting a 41' fifth wheel and long bed dually up or down the mountain. The bath house on the top level is almost complete and looks great inside. We used the main office showers and bathrooms at times and they were spotless. The wi-fi and phone signal (Verizon) are much improved from our last visit here. The cable set up is a bit odd in that you get one remote that operates the box, so if you have more than one TV, you have to pass the remote between rooms. Not a huge deal since we don't watch much TV, but could affect some campers.
The owners work hard to make this park a great experience. They are very friendly and helpful. I only had 2 very minor issues all week. First, I think there should be exceptions for the one car per site rule. The pull thru sites up top have plenty of room for a small second vehicle (which we had) and saves a very long, steep walk down to the office where extra cars must be parked. Second, and a bigger issue, was the manager enforcing some unwritten rule about not moving the picnic table off the deck. We had moved the table literally 5 feet to be under our awning so some of the the large crowd we had could eat outside during the rain, which we had a lot of that week. The table and chairs are wrought iron, so it's not like they could be damaged by moving them, and we even said we'd put them back after the rain stopped. No dice. Kind of a bad rule, and furthermore - if it's a rule, put it in the list of rules you give at check in.
One last note - be very cautious if you have a long trailer or MH and stay in the lower sites. We saw many gouges in the pavement where folks dragged the back of their rig pulling into the site. Very steep approach and exit.
Overall, we really like this campground and all there is to do nearby. It's a bit pricey at $70 per night ($5 more per extra person), but the views are worth it. We camped at Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed in spot 7. Originally sad that we couldn't get the top level but this spot was private and shaded and we were happy. We scraped our hitch pulling in and was a bit tricky. There are no amenities and no open spaces for kids to play, but for a few nights or for someone without kids, it's very peaceful and pretty. Well maintained property and nice staff. This park is amazing. The sites are immaculate, the shower and laundry facilities well supplied and clean, wifi works well and consistently, the water pressure is good and the staff is very helpful and friendly. We stayed in one of the mountain top views with a deck that included a wooden swing, picnic table and grill. The deck was built into the side of the hill so the back of it was literally 20 feet off the ground. The view was amazing and totally worth the effort it took to get to the top site.
The mountain sites are hard to reach, but the staff members are expert at escorting you up the hill. They even convinced us not to unhook our tow knowing exactly how much space we would need to make the turns up the hill.

I strongly recommend this RV park if you are looking for that special place to enjoy the glorious mountains near Asheville. You will not be disappointed! We camped at Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground in a Motorhome.

This was our second summer stay at Mama Gertie's and both visits were exceptional. All the great reviews you read are indeed the "real deal". The campground is absolutely beautiful with great landscaping and spectacular views. It is very quiet, peaceful, and relaxing. You don't even want to leave each day to go do other things in the area. All facilities are well maintained. Bathrooms, showers, laundry areas are always spotless. Also, they have a game room and small gym. The on site store is nice and adequately stocked. The only thing we would like to see that is not there is to have some nice playground equipment installed for kids. Yet, kids always seem to be very happy regardless!.This is a great base camp to do everything in Asheville, western NC or even into eastern TN. Day trips are a breeze to anywhere you want to go. The two primary staff members with whom we have dealt are everything guests should want in a host. They are both friendly, good natured, welcoming, inclusive, and responsive. Finally, I will say that in our 2 trips here (which has covered about about 21 nights), we are amazed at the clientele at the campground - everyone is very friendly, quiet, and totally respectful towards each other and the campground premises itself. Just an awesome place. We camped at Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground in a Travel Trailer.
