Our rate included a $10/night discount for staying 4 nights or more. This quiet park is on a small private brackish lake where you can see smaller fish from the seawall. The sites that back up to the seawall have a great view! Wifi was excellent. OTA TV reception is very poor. Only a couple of TV stations come in. The very clean bathrooms & showers are in an elevated building (with a handicap ramp). Water/electric/sewer hookups are very good. Roads & sites are not paved. The single washer & dryer worked well ($1.50 each). We had an issue with our space (being next to 3 small dogs) & the manager/owner worked hard to get us a space that was better for us. We like it here and will return. We camped at The Refuge on Roanoke Island in a Travel Trailer.

This s a newer campground with modern hookups in very good condition. It's along the road to the very small town of Wanchese, NC, so very little road noise. Rate is $62 a nite if staying 1-3 nights, $52 a night for 4+ nights. We camped at The Refuge on Roanoke Island in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Check out the local retail seafood shops. We got excellent sword fish to put on the grill from Austin Fish Company, 3711 US 158 in Nags Head. It's about 11 mi to the northeast.

Date of Stay: November, 2016 - $55.00
Overall Rating:

We were here for 5 nights. We did not use the bath house, but did check out the facilities and they were clean, although small. We did try to use the laundry room which is essentially a closet with a washer and dryer, coin-operated. It was out of order the day we tried.

The campground is situated around a quarter circle on the sound (not ocean) with beautiful views, but also with pretty strong winds at times. You can see crab and fish but no toe-dipping since the seawall is about 5' high. There is a pier at the far end of the campground, as well as a picnic shelter and pool.

The grounds were clean. The sites were dirt and grass with a picnic table. The hookups worked well although the cable hookup is a little tricky...you get a cable box and some instructions that may or may not work without calling the company help line. We got only a few public channels with our air antenna.

There is a camp host on site if you need help with anything. About half or more of the sites are permanent, but the nice waterfront spots are saved for short-term visitors. We camped at The Refuge on Roanoke Island in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The only drawback is proximity to Outer Banks water activities. We love the island history and took in Fort Raleigh, Manteo waterfront, Festival Park (and we had seen The Lost Colony during an earlier visit) -- all of these are only a few miles down the road. If you want the wild horse tours, parasailing, beaching, shelling, etc. you will need to go across the bridge to Nags Head, and the other towns along the Outer Banks stretch. it is not far to Nags Head, but if most of what you want to do is on that side of the water, you may want to stay closer. We liked the fact that we were away from the hustle and bustle, but to each his own.

There are quite a few restaurants on Roanoke Island, drug stores, grocery (small but adequate), hair salons, and about anything you would need while visiting.

Stayed here middle of September for a long weekend doing the shakedown of our new TT. Sites are wide but not level. Sites for overnighters are close to the highway which makes it noisy all night. Walkway around sound has no fence or railing which wasn't good when you have a toddler. But the reason we gave it a 1 is because of the rude manager when we checked in but even more so when we were hooking up trying to leave on time. He rode by on his golf cart 3 to 4 times making sure we were out and telling someone loudly we'd better hurry or there'd be hell to pay. Check in and check out here are both at 11:00, wth?? We camped at The Refuge on Roanoke Island in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed at end of October so campground was very quiet with only 2 other campers. Several sites appeared to be full timers. Manager was helpful and made several attempts to get the cable set up working. Fortunately we are not huge TV folks, so lack of cable was not a big issue. Our site (15) was right on the bay and delightful for relaxing and reading. We camped at The Refuge on Roanoke Island in a Motorhome.

This is an excellent alternative to the "beach" campgrounds we passed, that were super tight & not actually on the ocean. The area is quiet at night. There are many well-kept long term units, but they put short terms on the sea wall at the edge of a larger salt water pond, which is beautiful. The spectacularly clean restroom/showers are on an elevated building with stairs & a ramp. A lovely boardwalk winds through the marshes. There was no WIFI, no cable and only a couple OTA TV stations that were UNC PBS. There is a discount for an extended stay. We loved the atmosphere here and will come back. We camped at The Refuge on Roanoke Island in a Travel Trailer.

The Park itself was OK, Level spaces in an semi circle around an Pond. The paved walkway is elevated about 3 ft without a fence or barrier. The park used numerous 2 ft high 6"X6" post to mark sites very difficult to see from your vehicle. The Manager had the worst attitude. He threatened to have us "kicked out", Accused my wife of being drunk, and told her to get new batteries for her hearing aid.( She is a retired business professional who do not drink).I have never encountered such a rude individual dealing with the public. We will never be back. We camped at The Refuge on Roanoke Island in a Travel Trailer.

This park is very nice, with a beautiful view of a salt marsh lake. The site was level and pretty spacious. The only bad thing was there was no shade and it was very hot! The facilities were excellent as well and were kept very clean. The site manager was very hands off, but polite when we arrived. We stayed in an older pop-up camper and felt a little out of place with so many new RVs and motor homes. There was also quite many seasonal guests who were staying here. They were nice enough, but they kept to themselves. We camped at The Refuge on Roanoke Island in a Tent Trailer.

Stayed 8 nights. Good campground.

Dirt/gravel roads and sites. All sites back-in perpendicular to campground road (not angled) but no obstructions at all so backing in was not an issue. Reasonably easy to level.

Very good bathhouse/shower. One set of laundry equipment that we did not use.

Most sites seem to be seasonals. Not all the seasonal rigs and their sites were all that well kept but none was what I'd consider dirty or rundown. Few of them occupied during the week, so it was pretty quiet.

Transients given back-in sites along man-made lagoon close to local road. Traffic noise very noticeable during the day; less so after dark but occasional loud trucks were quite noticeable.

Transient sites filled up on the the weekend. On the weekend we were there everyone was well behaved, mostly. Not a problem. But this is not a campground for you if you want separation and isolation and privacy.

Overall, a decent place but it seemed to me to be just a bit less "spiffy" than it appeared on its website. My wife was less concerned about this than I was, but I was not negatively concerned; it's just something I observed.

Nice boardwalk out around the marsh and lagoon. Less bird life than we would have liked. I think the fisherman next to us would have liked more fish in the lagoon than he seemed to be finding?! We camped at The Refuge on Roanoke Island in a Travel Trailer.

Great fresh seafood retail (O'Neal's) about a mile south. Campground will give you their brochure. DEFINITELY go for lunch seafood baskets, sandwiches, etc., one day. Prepare to wait but it's worth it!

This is a very nice, well landscaped park, but it has absolutely no shade. Short term sites are along a seawall next to a pretty tidal pool. Sites are gravel, but pretty level. The only negative is the cable TV service. At check-in you are provided a converter box which you have to connect to your TV. The instructions are generic, so good luck in figuring out how to do it in your particular unit. It took me two days, two calls to the cable provider's tech assistance, and exchanging the box to finally get it working. (Park staff wasn't any help technically.) Three other neighbors also had problems, so I know it was not just me. How can a park that is modern otherwise have such an antiquated/obsolete cable setup! We camped at The Refuge on Roanoke Island in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This campground is in a secluded prime location on Roanoke Island in Manteo. It's within minutes to the outer banks where there is plenty of shopping.... restaurants and salt life. It has all level sites that are grass/gravel.... in the sun.... with zero shade. Utilities are good and in the correct location. Some sites face the pond but are back-in sites The manager lives in her motorhome in the park and is very accommodating. The roads are packed gravel....wide and in good shape. There are some seasonals but the c/g is clean... quiet and neat. The pool is decent but could use an update. The cable TV system is antiquated and you need to rent and install a park owned cable box if you want cable channels. Satellite reception is excellent. The WiFi is annoying.... useless.... and kicks you off every 8-10 minutes.

Overall the c/g is nice and we would visit again in the future. We camped at The Refuge on Roanoke Island in a Motorhome.

Out of the way on the Wanchese end of Roanoke Island, the fisherman's end of the island. We loved it. The campground is quite new and sits on a salt water pond amidst miles of marsh grass. The woman who runs the place lives in a camper right in the park. A really lovely park. We camped at The Refuge on Roanoke Island in a Travel Trailer.

This park was quiet and had a nice view of a lake. Sites were not too close together. Unfortunately when on the Outer Banks you do not have a lot of choices for RV parks, and this park was quite expensive for what you got. There is no cable TV. The Wi-Fi only worked for a brief period of time while we were there. The woman manager that checked us in was very nice and helpful, but when I went to inquire as to the problem with the Wi-Fi she was not there and the man who stuck his head out the window of their RV was very rude, grouchy, and told me to come back when she was there. We have been traveling from RV park to RV park. This is the first review I have written. Would not stay there again. We camped at The Refuge on Roanoke Island in a Travel Trailer.

Nice campground but quite pricey. The wifi wasn't working but when I spoke to the lady at the office she was able to get it running and it worked fine for the rest of our stay.Cable and phone service worked well. Looks like lots of seasonal campers here, the waterfront sites are used for short term visitors so that was very nice. We would stay again if in the area but would opt for at least a 4 nite stay which lowers cost $10 per nite. We camped at The Refuge on Roanoke Island in a Fifth Wheel.

This park is a good spot to relax for a night while on Roanoke Island. The park staff are nice folks and the full hookups are very welcomed. All the sites are crushed stone and I had to do a little leveling to get my rig leveled. We camped at The Refuge on Roanoke Island in a Motorhome.
