This is the place that RVrs don't want others to know about. Awesome views, great service, perfect sites. No Wi-Fi but ATT cell had three bars and LTE. Went to Mount Airy and the Wilks Heritage museum ... both were great. We camped at Bandits Roost COE in a Fifth Wheel.

First time staying here. Very pleased with facilities. Our site was very shady, level and long. Water pressure was good. NO CATV or Internet, but antenna picked up about a dozen channels. Easy to navigate in park. Lake access is nice and water is clean. Gated access and ice and wood available from attendant. About 10 mins to downtown Wilkesboro or to major shopping/dining area on Hwy 421N. Nice playground for little ones. Bathouses clean. Dumpstation on way out. Highly recommend and will return. My site was 15A and it wasn't exactly what I thought it would be. It was basically 2 sites together; it would have been great for family or friends. There was not another camper next to me so it was fine. The picnic table and fire pit were "behind" the trailer NOT on the side; the site was therefore narrow, but very long. There are several sites like this so be aware. We camped at Bandits Roost COE in a Travel Trailer.

This is one of our favorite parks. Sites are well spaced and large, water access is good, especially for our dog who loves to swim, and for us seniors, the price is very right. The only thing missing is sewer hookups but for our 4 day stay this time that was not a problem. Always like COE parks and this is a good one. We camped at Bandits Roost COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The site we were on had a very sloped area right next to the pad area so you need to be careful placing your unit to avoid falls when exiting your rig.

This COE has so many spots overlooking the water - well done COE! We lucked out and got a long pullthru for one night on our travels. It is long and spacious enough so you don't feel right on top of each other. The site is gravel and clean. No real shade to speak of in the pull thru section but there is wrap around water view.

This is just a water and electric site park, but there is a dump station. Plenty of room for your boat and extra vehicles in nearby parking areas. The road into the COE is very narrow - would hate to pass another large rig on the way in or out so plan your times accordingly. We camped at Bandits Roost COE in a Motorhome.

Decent, quiet CG on lake. Sort of hilly but not bad. Site we were in was narrow, with barely room for a chair between camper & several steps down to patio. Swimming beach was closed during our visit. If using the provided grill/table/firering be prepared to travel up and down a short flight of steps (about 6-7). Would still recommend this place if your priorities are not major amenities. Tips for other Campers:

Town of Wilkesboro has a museum that is kind of neat, along with an old jail and 1770's log cabin. Major shopping area is northwest of town on Hwy 421 and we did not find it until leaving. Several apple orchards south of town on Hwy 16. Medium size waterfall/slide also south of town just off Hwy 16.

We love camping at Bandit's Roost. The sites are large and many of them have wonderful views. As much as we love it, there are some issues though. Often the campfire smoke can get really thick and it becomes miserable to sit outside. I can deal with that though. My biggest complaint about Bandit's Roost is we always have people trying to push us off our site on the day we depart. Checkout at this campground is not till 3pm. Check in is 4pm. The people showing up for our sit always show up early and park right behind us. Sometimes they try to intimidate us into leaving early (before 3pm) which is really annoying. The attendants at the gate house should not allow this and enforce the check in time if the site is still occupied. It's too bad, because we really like this campground otherwise. This is a favorite for us since we live close by and love to be on the lake, but here are the ups and downs of what you need to know. If you want lake views then you need to stay in Loop A and you will sacrifice having shade. Most shaded sites don't have views of the lake. Loop B has more sites that are shaded. Reservations as far ahead as possible is a must. Most sites are fairly level and all are gravel. All sites have picnic table, fire pit and grill, some sites have these that are below the site itself and you have to walk down steps to get to. I hate those. The bathhouses are small and old and I don't care for the showers at all. However the staff does a good job at keeping them clean. We use the restroom facilities often but never the showers. This park is fairly close to our home and we love to visit it. It is easy to get to, easy to maneuver, and most sites are fairly level. Some of the sites have excellent views of the lake. Local families like to visit on the weekends so it does get crowded, but the sites are spacious. The restrooms and showers are older, but they are as clean as any other state park we have been to. Power was a little low on voltage, but the water pressure was good. The dump station is convenient. The park is gated, but they give you a code so you can get in after they close. Overall we really love this place. It is our favorite weekend spot close to home. We camped at Bandits Roost COE in a Travel Trailer.

I have reviewed this before but since their seems to be a big change , I thought I'd review it again. It seems this park has gone down. I am a big fan of COE parks so I do have a standard of comparison. First, the good: large sites, bathrooms and showers are always clean, either the park ranger, attendants, or police patrol frequently, good boat facilities. Not so good: no maintenance of the sites as evidenced by the trash left on the sites and in the fire pits between campers, garbage roadside not picked up (I reported a dirty diaper that was still there a week later), soda cans and plastic bottles litter the grounds, Firewood is no longer sold as it was being stolen, roads not cleared of debris after storms, rotting railroad ties. Maybe it is showing its age, but neatness is ageless. Only two TV channels as stated. Good AT&T signal for phone. We camped at Bandits Roost COE in a Fifth Wheel.

There are 2 loops. Loop A is by the lake. The more popular loop. Good for class A vehicles. You must book far in advance to get those sites. Loop B where I stayed is like a different campground in a woodsy area. Spaces do not seem well designed with tight curves and lots of railroad ties remarking the sites. Campsites seemed littered with little trash items. Hiking trails over grown and not maintained (again much litter). Bathhouse very poorly located down a steep set of stairs. Only 1 dumpster available and very grimey. Check-in person not friendly nor helpful. We camped at Bandits Roost COE in a Travel Trailer.

Like all COE parks, this one is well laid out and has many good features. However, the campsite spacing is closer than most COE parks. The best sites are 1) the outside sites in the higher number loop, 2) the lakeside sites in the lower number loop. The other sites are just too close for me.

This is a good campground if you like to meet your neighbors. We camped at Bandits Roost COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Full of Locals and noisy kids every weekend. Reservations Highly recommended. Nice campsites if not a bit close together by the lake - I think the CoE usually does the best job of designing and building sites of Anyone, 2 other sites not yet open. Only 2 tv channels - PBS NBC. Cell phone WiFi worked. I liked this park, even with the kids around, and would return for longer stay if I was in the area. Just 'passing through' and stayed 2 nights (before the fully booked weekend came). We camped at Bandits Roost COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

A nice COE campground with friendly staff, located in the NC foothills, very convenient to Wilkesboro. A few sites are on the water and many of the others have water views. Campground roads are paved, sites are gravel, unfortunately some sites are very muddy when it rains. There are two RV sections at the campground and a separate tent camping areas. A number of the sites have picnic tables down stairs, below the campsite, not convenient and a fall hazard. Section “A” bathroom should be condemned - It is a disgrace (hence the rating). Consequently section “B” bathhouse is not big enough to handle the volume. Verizon cellphone reception was great, internet reception was okay and TV with antenna was okay. We stayed for 7 days and will stay again. Rate shown is with senior pass. We camped at Bandits Roost COE in a Motorhome.
