This is one of the seven self-registration Provincial campgrounds in Nova Scotia. Reservations can be made online ($9) or onsite (no fee). If you do not require a serviced site, sites are generally available on weekdays. The paved entry road into the campground is in desperate need of re-surfacing, though the gravel roads throughout the campground are in good condition.

The 10 EW sites in Loop A resemble a parking lot, though site # 1 is waterfront and has decent privacy, and site # 3 has an unobstructed water view. The EW sites tend to fill up quickly and typically are fully booked on weekends, so if you are unable to boondock, advance reservations are recommended. There is decent privacy between sites in loops B & C and these sites are more typical of what you would expect to find in a provincial park.

There are vault toilets and several water faucets throughout the park. As this is a provincial park, water is tested daily. The washroom building is located in Loop B and has free hot showers, sinks, and electric outlets. While cleaned once daily, the washrooms could stand to be cleaned more thoroughly and frequently. There is a dump station and generator hours are from 10am until 8pm. Firewood and ice are available ($) and there is free wifi at the check-in kiosk. Full recycling is available.

There are no hiking trails within the park, though walking through the 3 loops makes for a nice walk. There is a small pebble beach and a boat launch, though canoe and kayak rentals are not available. The picnic park has become overgrown and is largely abandoned. This is truly a shame as the park is on the shores of the lovely Porters Lake. We camped at Porters Lake Provincial Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

This is the closest provincial campground to Halifax (40 min) and Dartmouth (20 min), and there is easy access to the Halifax International Arport (30 min).

Overall Rating:

Most of the paved entry road is in need of re-surfacing, though the gravel roads throughout the campground are in good condition. Firewood and ice are available ($) and there is free Wi-fi at the check-in kiosk. Cell phone coverage is excellent throughout the campground. The campground is located 10 km from the Porters Lake Shopping centre where there are gas stations (including diesel), bank, hardware, grocery store, liquor outlet, etc. Since hurricane Juan, this has become an open campground, though fast growing spruce trees generally provide decent privacy between sites. The 10 EW sites in Loop C resemble a parking lot. The rest of the sites are more typical of what you would expect to find in a provincial park. With the exception of the 10 EW sites (one of which is permanently occupied by the campground host), the rest of the sites are unserviced. Generator hours are from 10am to 8pm. There are clean washrooms with sinks, electricity, and free hot showers in each loop, as well as several potable water faucets and vault toilets in each loop, but no dishwashing station. This campground only recycles refundables. There are no hiking trails within the campground, though it is about a 7 km walk through the loops of the campground and the picnic park. There is a boat launch, and canoe and kayak opportunities are numerous, though rentals are not available. We camped at Porters Lake Provincial Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Nice gem, a little north of Halifax. Park only has about 10 electric sites. We stayed overnight and dry camped but the views of the lake and the serenity made it worth it. Site were mostly open. Staff was super friendly and helpful. We camped at Porters Lake Provincial Park in a Motorhome.
