We stayed in one of the few reserved spots. Others are first come, first serve which doesn't help me at all. I like knowing I have a spot! The spot was great, right near the water with as close as what you can get to a beach entry on a lake. Kids played in water right in front of us. Lots of boats wanting to dock there and a few other families that wanted to enter the water there, but nothing too bothersome. We went with another family who also had reserved a spot near us. We will do it again and next time rent a boat. We waited too late to reserve the boat. Hiking trails were really good, but the maps are not .. and trail markings do not match the map names. We camped at Lake Murray State Park / Elephant Rock in a Fifth Wheel.

campground was clean and well kept. Elephant Rock is closed at night. Only a fraction of the campsites are reservable. As we walked the campground, almost every site looked good. The concrete pads were very large - much wider than most. We camped at Lake Murray State Park / Elephant Rock in a Motorhome.

We will definitely return to this campground. We camped in space 30 which is a premium space right next to the lake. Great level concrete pad with plenty of space for our 40ft 5er and tow vehicle. Nearly every space in this campground, including the standard sites have water, electric and sewer, but space 30 has no sewer due to its proximity to the water. I guess the location makes up for the lack of sewer connection and still qualifies as "premium". It is a fantastic campsite. Had good AT&T wireless and data service here along with good TV antenna reception. We got all of the big networks. It's a fairly quick trip back into Ardmore if you need anything. We camped at Lake Murray State Park / Elephant Rock in a Fifth Wheel.

Visit the Nature Center and Tucker Tower Museum at Lake Murray. Walmart and Lowe's in Ardmore is about 20 minutes away, plus many restaurants. We ate at Two Frogs and it was very good.

We stayed at Lake Murray State Park, Elephant Rock campground in December 2016. Were in site 27. Our site was a pull through with full hookups. Shady site. Ours was in the non-reservable section of Elephant Rock Campground. Some sites are reservable and some have lake views. Beautiful area with much to see. Grocery and Walmart in Ardmore, OK. We will definitely return. We camped at Lake Murray State Park / Elephant Rock in a Fifth Wheel.

Date of Stay: November, 2015 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Lake Murray, located near the Texas border of Oklahoma, is Oklahoma's first state park and some say its best. Elephant Rock is located midway along the Western shore, a short drive off the Interstate south of Ardmore and about 1 mile North of the park headquarters, which itself is near the lodge, cabins, and chapel and across from a regional small plane airport and golf course. There are a couple of other campgrounds around Lake Murray and reviewed on rvparkreviews, one evidently permitting ATVs and another adjacent to the marina landing. Seemingly not reviewed (or perhaps considered part of Elephant Rock) is another excellent peninsula campground named "Tipp's Point" with gorgeous lake views adjacent to Elephant Rock, that appears to be less used or known. Not sure why, as there's a number of excellent back-ins and pull-throughs, at least some with full hook-up. Not aware of the history behind the name "Elephant Rock", but there is a large rock sitting just offshore (requires some imagination). The sites next to the shore are nice, though carry a "premium" charge (are clearly marked) and not supporting sewer, so we settled on a site closer to the entrance. The sites are first-come, first-served, and were more than adequate when we arrived late afternoon in November (note gate closes ~10 pm), but weekends got busier and it might fill up at peak times in the summer, so plan accordingly. The sites were very level and well-spaced, with many quite private. Quarters are used for the new shower rooms, but you can still find free showers in the older building away from the lake. A surprise for a state park, there was a laundry available, albeit with only two washers and two dryers (plus one washer was out when we were there). The host was friendly and helpful, and the park was well patrolled by park rangers. Maintenance & cleaning was good though the older bathrooms needed some paint on the doors and floor. It was nicely quiet & dark at night. We camped at Lake Murray State Park / Elephant Rock in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Most of the forest was oak, elm, hickory, and red cedar, with a very pleasant and bike-able asphalt trail through it. Verizon LTE and TV signals received with usable strength. Check out the rock tower on the opposite Eastern shore (history on Wikipedia). Ardmore is good for groceries.

A very nice state park. This quiet campground overlooks Lake Murray. There in an abundance of pull through sites and a good number of back in sites that offer a lot of privacy via trees. Premium sites on the lake are available for an extra charge. Sites have level concrete pads wide enough for your rig and some extra width to use as a patio. In early May, the place was packed on the weekend, but by Sunday afternoon the park was almost deserted. Also a boat ramp and a picnic area in the campground. There is a paved hiking/biking trail to the east of the campground. Lake levels are low right now. Excellent playground for the kids. Sites include a fire ring, elevated charcoal grill, concrete picnic table and lantern stand. Camp hosts are very friendly and helpful. When arriving, just pick a site and then pay the camp host. Reservations are not taken. We camped at Lake Murray State Park / Elephant Rock in a Motorhome.

Lake Murray State Park is a very pretty and, from what we saw, a well cared for park. There are multiple campgrounds and a variety of sites- FHU, partial hookups, pull-through, back-in, lakeside, open, shaded, heavily wooded and secluded. The park does not take reservations for campsites. For our 40' motorhome the park staff recommended we look for a site in Elephant Rock campground. We chose #16, a pull-through with FHU, a grill, fire ring, a big grassy yard on one side and with some shade trees, but still clear enough to get satellite reception (i.e., football). The lake water level was very low. The weather was rainy and dreary during our short stay so we didn't make use of the water activities, but we enjoyed the drive around the whole lake and a visit to Tucker Tower Nature Center in the park. Park staff, rangers and volunteers were very friendly and helpful. There was some construction going on and we were glad to see a state spending money on its parks. We would stay here again if in the area. We camped at Lake Murray State Park / Elephant Rock in a Motorhome.

We chose this park randomly, we were leaving Dallas early afternoon and wanted to find somewhere not too far away. We checked our Allstays iPad app and this park was noted. As always we check out other 'campers' reviews and thought this one sounded pretty good. We arrived and were absolutely delighted! This park is an absolute gem! The sites are wide and long and pretty level, the hook ups perfect and each site has a grill and a fire pit! We called ahead and were told to just go and pick our own spot and that the camp hosts would be along later in the day to collect our camping fee. There were so many wonderful sites we drove around a couple of times before deciding. There are some sites directly on the lakeside, some nestled in the trees and some more appropriate for a big rig like ours. We were initially only going to stay for 3 days but extended for another 2. Peaceful, well maintained, beautiful sun sets, plenty of wildlife and walking trails and the cheapest laundry we have encountered on our 3 months of travelling. Camp hosts are friendly and provided us with plenty of information about the surrounding area. They are also currently expanding the park and building more sites. Fantastic! We camped at Lake Murray State Park / Elephant Rock in a Fifth Wheel.

All the sites had level concrete pads and nice separations between sites. Restroom was clean . They have a laundry on site. We will be coming back to stay. Wish they would allow reservations though. Would have given this site a 10 if reservations were allowed We camped at Lake Murray State Park / Elephant Rock in a Motorhome.

This is one of our favorite stops. It is a state park campground with excellent facilities for a large rig. We parked a 36' coach with towed vehicle and did not have to unhook the towed vehicle. The pads are level concrete and the utilities are placed well for hooking up. There is plenty of room on the gravel portion of the pull through sites to park another vehicle. There are nearby trails through the woods where the dog enjoys walks. We camped at Lake Murray State Park / Elephant Rock in a Motorhome.
