I stayed in a non electric with no water hook up by choice. I wanted a more primitive site. Next to the lake with lots of shade. Beautiful with lots of wild life about. Turkeys, deer, etc, Buffalo ranging nearby. We camped at Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge - Doris Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Date of Stay: October, 2015 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

I was fortunate to get one of the ten electric campsites on the lake. These sites generally are taken by the late afternoon. Long rigs may have some difficulty leveling because some of the lakeside sites have a slope. There are other electric sites away from the lake that are a less popular but probably more flat. The asphalt pads at each site are rather narrow. All of the campsites I saw are back-in only. Water is available at a few spigots distributed around the campground. There is a dump station on the way out of the campground. The bathroom and showers were quite clean. The sounds of the field artillery from nearby Fort Sill can be somewhat annoying early in the morning or late at night. Turkeys, deer and squirrels frequent the campground and aren't afraid of people. I was serenaded by a flock of geese out on the lake one morning. The big animals - buffalo, elk and longhorn cattle - could wander through the campground, but didn't during my stay. We camped at Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge - Doris Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

We were in 50A site #49. No water at sites. Must fill fresh tank at one of the fresh water stations. Central dump station. Tight roads, best for RV's less than 35'. Beautiful scenery and wildlife. Great hiking, some challenging. We camped at Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge - Doris Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

$10 per night was with the Golden Age Passport 50% discount for a 50-amp only site. The campground itself is located within the very beautiful, scenic, and natural Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge where deer, buffalo, elk, longhorn cattle, prairie dogs, wild turkeys, and the more common wildlife are abundant. Spacing between the heavily treed sites is generous. Our site, like most, had a narrow, level-ish asphalt parking pad and a generous dirt area that included a concrete picnic table, fire ring, and pole-mounted BBQ grill. The park is located 25 miles northwest of Lawton where most any convenience is available. There are several hiking trails and one bicycle trail (bicycles are only allowed on paved roads). Our AT&T phone service was negligible until we used our booster. We used our Millenicom Jetpack (which received two bars of Verizon 3G) as a Wi-Fi hotspot and it worked well. We received 13 over-the-air TV stations including CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, and PBS. We camped at Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge - Doris Campground in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This place was very crowded for winter camping. We are glad we showed up in time to get one of the last 2 electric sites to help run the heater. There are very friendly folks in this campground. It is rustic with decent spacing between sites and lots to see in the area. I'd like to spend more time there. We camped at Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge - Doris Campground in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This is one of our favorite camping places, there is no water hookups but there is plenty of places where you can fill up at. The buffalo and longhorn wander freely. There is plenty of hiking and they have a state of the art interpretive center where you can learn all about the buffalo and history of the Wichita Mountains. We camped at Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge - Doris Campground in a Fifth Wheel.
