The main road into the park goes to the day use facility. A small sign for the campground points to the left off the main road. The RV sites are both pull-throughs and back-ins. Two long pull-throughs are at the entrance and the back-ins are on the perimeter of a loop road. The rest of the pull-throughs are inside the loop. Tent sites branch off the loop road where RVs are not allowed. A few of the sites have a water view or access. Our gravel back-in site had a beautiful view of the lake. There was plenty of trees and bushes on either sige of our site for great privacy. Notwithstanding that our neighbours had two excitable grandchildren who we definitely heard, but we are used to that. The electric and water posts are shared. They were situated in the bushes between the sites. My electric cord was long enough, but I had to add an extension to the water hose. The sewer was towards the front which meant I had to extend my hose as well. All utilities worked fine. There were Cable TV connections near the electric post, but they no longer work. Also there is no OTA TV. The park has Wi-Fi, but it is weak (couldn't get it from our site) and the closer one is to site 4 the better since the antenna is near the dumpster. There is a playground and small beach at the day use area. Other than our little neighbours, it was very quiet and we would definitely stay here again. We camped at Penn Lake Park Campground in a Motorhome.

This is a city park. It's really nice. Wide sites and very good wifi. Lake was very nice too. Good hiking trail around lake. There are a couple of other trails too. Full services. Not much else on offer in Marathon though. Might note that there are only a few sites in this park that can accommodate big rigs so reserve early especially if it's in the summer season. We camped at Penn Lake Park Campground in a Motorhome.

A small city-owned park with all the facilities you want, full hookups, free wi fi, and free cable tv (though it wasn't working when we were there). There is a small lake for fishing, the restrooms are large and clean. Lovely spot for overnight (as we were) or for staying a week. Apparently you can get free firewood as well, we didn't have a campfire. We camped at Penn Lake Park Campground in a Motorhome.

The gas station on the hwy 17 at the cutoff is MUCH more than the gas station in town, on the corner where you turn towards the campground.

A very nice campground run by the town of Marathon. The bathroom / shower was very clean, but was a bit of a walk away. The campground is right beside a small lake, and it was really quiet when we were there. Definitely will return if coming this way again. We camped at Penn Lake Park Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Supposed to have cable TV but didn't work. The help were just kids who didn't know much about it. But that should not take too much away from the stay. Very nice site on Penn Lake. Quiet. We camped at Penn Lake Park Campground in a Motorhome.

We enjoyed our stay here, however, I think the price is a little high for the quality of the park. Located beside Penn Lake makes for a beautiful setting and our spot backed close to the lake which was an easy walk on a path through the trees. The park has a couple of pull-thru spots at the entrance, they seem a little exposed to the road. Plenty of tent camping available also in a nice section of the park further in. Electrical and water services were a little distance from the back corner of the motorhome, was able to make them reach without extensions luckily. Sewer was conveniently located. All worked reliably. Easy bike ride into town and there are some hiking trails that surround the lake. ATV's are popular in the area, however, none were seen in the park. Some trails go by the park so there is a bit of background noise. There is a nice park area near the campground, and a short walk around the lake gets you to a playground and volleyball net. Would stay here again. We camped at Penn Lake Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Penn Lake Park is a non-motorized area, so you won't have jetski's in the lake or ATV's ripping through the campground. Glad you enjoyed your stay!

The price (which I felt was a little expensive) indicated is in Cdn $ and includes tax for a 50amp FHU (including cable tv), pull-thru, gravel site that was level. Each site appears to have a picnic table with bench seats and a fire pit. There are two pull-thrus for big rigs at about 80'+ and just in through the main gate of the park. #2 wasn't particularly private, being open on the door side and the main access road passing right by. The site on the other side is much more private but this was taken by someone in a tent who plugged their electric car in to the 30amp outlet. I booked several months ago through the town office and had been assigned my site by their staff. I had no interaction with the on-site staff but did see one or two of them around. Drop-in registration is available at the gate. Many of the back-in sites are nestled in to the trees but it would be a struggle for a big rig to get in to any of these The shower houses are individual showers with what appeared to be plenty of space. I took a peek while they were empty and they appeared clean and there was no additional charge to use them. The toilets were also clean and very accessible to those who use a wheelchair with wider doors and grab bars. There is a small laundry but I couldn't see how much it was to use. The power was a steady 120v and we experienced no problems. Water tasted good but the pressure wasn't particularly high. All services were located centrally on the correct side of the site. There are trains nearby but these do not appear to run through the night and it wasn't a problem. Many folk in town sound like they have ATV's and use them to get around so there was some noise there. Wi-Fi is included in the price of staying and worked well enough for us. The CG is part of the town park and sat next to a small, shallow pond/lake with clean, sandy beaches and children play equipment. This is a gem of a place and I would certainly return. We camped at Penn Lake Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Located in the town, there was access to an Extra Foods grocery store which has a good selection of foods. There is also a gas bar selling diesel that has a wide nozzle for quick fills. This is the cheapest place around for fuel. We looked for a local restaurant but it was late and nothing appeared to be open.

Very clean and just an all around enjoyable place to stay the nite (or two).

Would stay again, only concern would be during the busy season as there are limited sites. Enjoyed the stay, very relaxing especially this time of year..... relatively quiet. We camped at Penn Lake Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a lovely little municipal campground just a couple of miles off the TransCanada highway. The town of Marathon is on the north shore of Lake Superior, and this little gem is on a small inland lake with warm shallow water and sandy beaches.

This campground has a number of 30 amp sites and tent sites and it has 2 pull-through big rig sites with 50 amp full hook up service. The site was satellite friendly, and there was cable TV and WiFi! Seriously!!!

This is a self-serve campground - I made reservations via email and phone with a town employee during the week, and my site was marked reserved with my name when I arrived. Self-serve/ self-pay is also an option. The roads were paved leading to the campground, and were easy to navigate!

Not much going on in this little town, but this was a great stop over between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste Marie ON. We camped at Penn Lake Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Pretty park. Web Site shows cable tv. Was not able to get any stations at all. We bought a new cable and still nothing. Expensive for what they offer. One utility pole for 2 sites so can be hard to hook up. Make sure you have extension cords. We took a pull through and pulled in the right direction for the utilities. Busy campground with road workers. We camped at Penn Lake Park Campground in a Travel Trailer.

The campground itself is located in beautiful surroundings. The road to enter the campground is so bumpy, I thought the trailer would flip on its side...
Called the city ahead to make reservation, was told that my site would have my name and permit on sitepost. To this day, I still don't know if we camped in the right site... Most of the sites are not numbered, never found any permit or other paper with my info on it. I suspect other campers used most of the permits/reservations papers to start their fire!

Hookups are good. Free firewood. No Wifi.

Because of the confusion and poor road conditions to get to park, I'm dropping rating to 4 stars.

Next morning, a city pickup was doing it's "security" rounds in the park, but was going so fast I had to tell my kids to stay on the site and not venture anywhere else. The guy almost ran over another couple walking their dog. Guy eventually stopped and I went to tell him to slow down as this is campground (he should know), and he told me "whatever" and just drove away! For this, I'm dropping rating to 3 stars (and made formal complaint to city). We camped at Penn Lake Park Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed 4 nights in a 40' motorhome with 4 slide-outs. We had one of the two long pull through lots, which was more than adequate for our motor-home & 2 vehicles. Water, sewer, & 50 amp electric were reliable. Some sites had services on the wrong side, although our lot had services located on the correct side. Pads are level, hard, gravel. Reservations are made during regular business hours through the city offices. No staff on site, however park maintenance staff are working every day & upkeep is excellent. On site laundromat is clean with relatively new machines. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Penn Lake Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Interesting free city museum in Marathon is small, and staffed by local volunteers who provide detailed information on the history of the area. There are a couple of overlooks of Lake Superior beaches. If you enjoy hiking, there are some scenic hiking trails. The downfall of this area is very little to do.

Checking in wasn't obvious since it is not staffed. If you have a reservation just turn left as you enter the park and find your space with your name on it. If you don't have a reservation, turn left and fill out a form and make your payment; take any space that isn't reserved.
