Reviews others have written about 90-degree sites, tight spaces, and close trees/brush are valid. We have a smaller (24') RV, so these were not issues. We found the park to be a pleasant place to stay. It's set in a forested area with tall trees but not such that it causes deep shade. We'd stay in our again. It was reasonably private with vegetation on either side. There are breaks where you can peek at the adjacent sites but not too bad. Directly across the loop road is a tall, thick hedge and garbage cans set behind permanent posts. Behind the site about 50' away through trees is a trail. The only negative for us about this site might be that it's only one site away from the registration area. We probably got more engine idling noise than other sites. The beach is a 10 minute walk. There is a viewpoint trail with stunning views. It leads to other trails. It's long. Walk on it to the extent you're comfortable. Up to Norton Gulch views are worthwhile. If you take it all the way to Shore Acres (1.5 hours one way) the views are breathtaking. By site B17 there is a trail that goes through the forest to Yoakam Point. This trail will bring you to the road. Take a right (east), walk a very short distance, and cross the road at the Yoakam Point sign. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

On the way in we stopped at Fisherman's Grotto. They have a large open lot. They will be on your right side as you are heading to the park. It's on the east side of the bridge that connects to Charleston. It's about 4 miles from the park. We picked up some chowder (decent flavor though a little too thick for our tastes) and fantastic crab cakes.

Nice quiet park, small beach, several trails. Beach was good for small children since it was in the bay and is very flat The issue from a previous review of mud in the tunnel on the path to the beach has been resolved. Pallets and plywood provide an elevated walking surface We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Motorhome.

Full Hookups $29 Site A4 This State Park is on the Cape Arago Highway just below Coos Bay. There are 29 full hookup sites, 34 w&e, 66 tent sites. Sites are paved with picnic table and fire ring. Bathhouse with showers but no dump station. A short walk brings you to the beach across the street where one can rock climb at low tide.. Sites are nice but some are hard to back into. What this state park has going for it is location. Cape Arago State Park with its picnic area, hiking, and outstanding views is about two miles south of the park and the highway ends there in a loop. The road we took off of route 101 was narrow with many curves to get to the park but the drive is worth it. We camped here for two nights and were glad we did. This is called the undiscovered coast of Oregon. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Shore Acres State Park is just south of the park, which was the former estate of Louis Simpson. The views are stunning and trails lead to the private beach and one of the best whale watching locations on the Oregon Coast. 19,000 whales migrate past this point heading from the north to Mexico twice a year. Seven acres of the original estate gardens are located here and maintained by state workers and volunteers. If you stay at the park you don't pay the entrance fee for Shore Acres State Park.

The Simpson Reef Wildlife Viewpoint is along this highway with views of sea lions, seals, elephant seals, and whales. You can hear them a mile away. There is a viewpoint for the Cape Arago Lighthouse owned by the local tribes, so no tours.

Nice quiet location. Park was completely full and still had good electric. Absolutely no cell coverage. Bathrooms and showers are older but kept clean. All sites are back-in, no pull throughs. Most sites are perpendicular to camp road instead of angled thus longer rigs could have problems. Nice hedging between sites provides great privacy. Small creek runs through park thus a bit buggy (mosquitos) if winds are calm. Sunset Bay across the road was a bit littered and not that impressive to us. Overall, a notch below other Oregon State Parks we have visited. If you have never been here, it is worthwhile to come. Glad we came but next time we travel the Oregon coast we will probably stay somewhere else. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Motorhome.

Enjoyed having full hookups in a state Park setting. Hosts are very present and helpful. Loved how the park has used shrubs and trees to create quite a bit of privacy at each site! We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Motorhome.

Paved roads and sites. We were in A loop at site 32. The site was fine once we got in. If there had been anyone in any of the sites across from us we'd still be there or never gotten in. There are some sites that a big rig will fit in but choose carefully. They are long enough but it took us 5 cuts to get in and out of our site and I usually nail tight sites in one try. They only had 30 amp service and I thought it was ok and checked out ok at the the pedestal but my computer kept acting up and cutting out. There was no cell service or wifi available from Verizion. The showers were old but clean and had good pressure and lots of hot water. Note on the cost it included a $8 reservation fee. Those were the issues but the park is a great location and if you happen to catch a storm there with big waves it's amazing. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Motorhome.

Lots of good hiking. Great shore hike to do especially if there's big storm. Huge waves that hit the rocks and then explode above the level of the cliffs.

I wanted to add my review because of the discrepancy of sizes of the sites. It's true that all the sites here are not suitable for big rigs but we're in a 40 footer and d6 and some others were fine for us. Having said that we skirted the bushes that lined the D loop to get to our site . It is pretty tight to navigate . We were a walk-in and I had a back up down the street if this didn't work out. As it turned out we were very happy! I'm pretty sure this is what we paid. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Motorhome.

One of our favorite Oregon state parks. Perfectly situated just across the street from the beach at Sunset Bay. Our full hookup site was spacious and all of the utilities worked well. The park roads are wide and level making it easy to walk the dogs around the park. Park staff and campground host are very helpful and know the surrounding area well. Host drives through the campground in the evening selling firewood. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Motorhome.

Be sure to drive up the hill to Simpson Reef to view and hear the sea lions and elephant seals that gather just off shore. Also, on the same road is Shore Acres state park where your camping pass get you access to the beautiful gardens.

This park is about a five minute walk to the beach which is a natural bay and it looks like safe, shallow water. Lots of kids swimming in the water when we were there. No TV or Wi-Fi, but it is a beautiful location. Very private sites with bushes and shrubs for separation. Just a few minutes drive to Cape Arago and the Shore Acres botanical gardens which were wonderful We saw two whales very close to shore when we were there. Overall Rating:

Very nice Oregon state park. Parking pads are mostly level. Excellent separation between sites with lots of trees and shrubs. Although we had rain one day, the site stayed relatively dry with no standing water. I would recommend that you choose your site carefully, as many are at a right angle to the roadway making backing up a challenge. We had to go the wrong way on the access road in order to get settled in our site. It was no big deal, just something to be aware of. Many of the sites on the outside of the A and D loops are at a much better angle for backing in to. Many of those sites also have water, sewer and electric, while the interior sites are water and electric only. We will definitely stay here again when in the area. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Motorhome.

Good quiet site with lots of bays in small groups, all with tables and fire rings. Check in was a bit of a hoo-ha but the site was well worth it. Would definitely return. Note the site fee includes entrance to the nearby botanic gardens. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a beautiful park along the Pacific Coast. The park has a protected beach with a great sunset view and hiking trails connect it to two other lovely state parks. An enjoyable nine hole golf course is next door. The park is near Coos Bay but feels isolated and peaceful. This was an excellent and relaxing spot. Another great Oregon State Park. This time we picked a spot right up by the entrance and I don't know if this was the low point of the park, but the ground was very, very soggy and mushy, and they hadn't had any rain so it wasn't because of rainfall it was just very mushy, this made for walking around the campsite very muddy and nasty. You are in a dead zone as far as cell service and TV reception. Our stay was very nice, but it wasn't as nice as we had in the past because of the spot we were in. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a great park. All trees and nice spaces, but they are a bit narrow for a big rig like mine. The beach is a bit of a walk but it is spectacular. All this place needs is Wi-Fi and it would be a 10. It was a great spot for the end of our trip. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Motorhome.

The drive through town was quite seedy. But, the campground was far enough outside town. Great coastal beauty. Accessible tide pools. Great botanical garden. Maybe 20' between sites, but vegetation create privacy. Friendly staff. Would camp here again. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Motorhome.
