Reviews others have written about 90-degree sites, tight spaces, and close trees/brush are valid. We have a smaller (24') RV, so these were not issues. We found the park to be a pleasant place to stay. It's set in a forested area with tall trees but not such that it causes deep shade. We'd stay in our again. It was reasonably private with vegetation on either side. There are breaks where you can peek at the adjacent sites but not too bad. Directly across the loop road is a tall, thick hedge and garbage cans set behind permanent posts. Behind the site about 50' away through trees is a trail. The only negative for us about this site might be that it's only one site away from the registration area. We probably got more engine idling noise than other sites. The beach is a 10 minute walk. There is a viewpoint trail with stunning views. It leads to other trails. It's long. Walk on it to the extent you're comfortable. Up to Norton Gulch views are worthwhile. If you take it all the way to Shore Acres (1.5 hours one way) the views are breathtaking. By site B17 there is a trail that goes through the forest to Yoakam Point. This trail will bring you to the road. Take a right (east), walk a very short distance, and cross the road at the Yoakam Point sign. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

On the way in we stopped at Fisherman's Grotto. They have a large open lot. They will be on your right side as you are heading to the park. It's on the east side of the bridge that connects to Charleston. It's about 4 miles from the park. We picked up some chowder (decent flavor though a little too thick for our tastes) and fantastic crab cakes.

Nice quiet park, small beach, several trails. Beach was good for small children since it was in the bay and is very flat The issue from a previous review of mud in the tunnel on the path to the beach has been resolved. Pallets and plywood provide an elevated walking surface We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Motorhome.

Actually we were not able to stay here. We had reservations for 4 nights but were unable to get into our site. Would have fit OK but the road was very narrow with trees right up to the pavement and the site showed angled on the map was at a right angle to the road with trash cans protected by concrete posts right opposite the site. I tried, but no way, first time in 15 years that I could not get into a site! Granted we have a 37' fifth wheel with a Heavy Duty Truck but that is usually not an issue. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Not as nice as other Oregon State Parks we've been in, but ok. Water/electric sites. Was able to get satellite coverage. No phone or internet. You can't see the ocean/bay from the campground. There is a tunnel to walk under the highway to the beach, but it was muddy when we were there. Easy to get into the sites. Had to T-bone the truck. Probably main issue we had was they had a sign saying they were having problems with theft. We probably wouldn't stay here again due to the theft issues and no phone/internet coverage. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Nice park in a small canyon that stays pretty cool. There is often morning fog. There is no cell service here but it is available a short drive away. Lots of scenic views and sites in the area. Good crabbing at Charleston. Unfortunately because of wildfires in Oregon, the state park instituted a policy banning campfires in all of Oregon. Although we understand the concern, the state park Director should have made allowances for some of the coastal state parks. With the fog and light rain/mist one couldn't have started a wildfire with gasoline! Park rangers patrol almost constantly. Safe and clean park. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Old park, trailer back-ins are at 90 degree angles to road, lots of brush and trees making it extremely difficult to park trailer and pull it out. Our spot A-18 was so tight we had no room to put our awning out. Picnic table located on the otherwise, not in a very usable spot, fire pit almost in the brush. (fire ban in effect), but location could have been hazardous! The showers are so old the cement has eroded away leaving one standing in gravel. Stained walls, a coat of fresh paint would go a long ways! Getting out of spot was equally as hard as backing in. Noted bark missing off trees where other folks had similar problems. This park needs an update! Brush & trees need to be removed, shower floors remade and fresh paint. The place where I walked our 2 dogs had a lot of "land-mines" making it unpleasant when ones shoes couldn't escape without a mess. This park had a "few" spots where a "few" large rigs managed to park without too many problems, but I would never revisit this park when there are many nicer ones to choose from We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Pros - reservable, level, paved, and it has the trail head for the Oregon Coast 8 mile trail here. Cons - sites are a little close together, signs about thieves stealing bikes made it seem unsafe. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Full Hookups $29 Site A4 This State Park is on the Cape Arago Highway just below Coos Bay. There are 29 full hookup sites, 34 w&e, 66 tent sites. Sites are paved with picnic table and fire ring. Bathhouse with showers but no dump station. A short walk brings you to the beach across the street where one can rock climb at low tide.. Sites are nice but some are hard to back into. What this state park has going for it is location. Cape Arago State Park with its picnic area, hiking, and outstanding views is about two miles south of the park and the highway ends there in a loop. The road we took off of route 101 was narrow with many curves to get to the park but the drive is worth it. We camped here for two nights and were glad we did. This is called the undiscovered coast of Oregon. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Shore Acres State Park is just south of the park, which was the former estate of Louis Simpson. The views are stunning and trails lead to the private beach and one of the best whale watching locations on the Oregon Coast. 19,000 whales migrate past this point heading from the north to Mexico twice a year. Seven acres of the original estate gardens are located here and maintained by state workers and volunteers. If you stay at the park you don't pay the entrance fee for Shore Acres State Park.

The Simpson Reef Wildlife Viewpoint is along this highway with views of sea lions, seals, elephant seals, and whales. You can hear them a mile away. There is a viewpoint for the Cape Arago Lighthouse owned by the local tribes, so no tours.

We stayed here for the proximity to Shore Acres for storm watching and the holiday lights. Unfortunately we only got to stay two nights out of four reserved due to heavy rain that flooded the campground. No warning was given, and our first indication of a problem was waking up to see water over our second step, and our Dish Tailgater bobbing in the water behind the trailer. We barely got out with the trailer and had to wade in cold water thigh-high to hook up. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Nice quiet location. Park was completely full and still had good electric. Absolutely no cell coverage. Bathrooms and showers are older but kept clean. All sites are back-in, no pull throughs. Most sites are perpendicular to camp road instead of angled thus longer rigs could have problems. Nice hedging between sites provides great privacy. Small creek runs through park thus a bit buggy (mosquitos) if winds are calm. Sunset Bay across the road was a bit littered and not that impressive to us. Overall, a notch below other Oregon State Parks we have visited. If you have never been here, it is worthwhile to come. Glad we came but next time we travel the Oregon coast we will probably stay somewhere else. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Motorhome.

Paved roads and sites. We were in A loop at site 32. The site was fine once we got in. If there had been anyone in any of the sites across from us we'd still be there or never gotten in. There are some sites that a big rig will fit in but choose carefully. They are long enough but it took us 5 cuts to get in and out of our site and I usually nail tight sites in one try. They only had 30 amp service and I thought it was ok and checked out ok at the the pedestal but my computer kept acting up and cutting out. There was no cell service or wifi available from Verizion. The showers were old but clean and had good pressure and lots of hot water. Note on the cost it included a $8 reservation fee. Those were the issues but the park is a great location and if you happen to catch a storm there with big waves it's amazing. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Motorhome.

I wanted to add my review because of the discrepancy of sizes of the sites. It's true that all the sites here are not suitable for big rigs but we're in a 40 footer and d6 and some others were fine for us. Having said that we skirted the bushes that lined the D loop to get to our site . It is pretty tight to navigate . We were a walk-in and I had a back up down the street if this didn't work out. As it turned out we were very happy! I'm pretty sure this is what we paid. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Motorhome.

One of our favorite Oregon state parks. Perfectly situated just across the street from the beach at Sunset Bay. Our full hookup site was spacious and all of the utilities worked well. The park roads are wide and level making it easy to walk the dogs around the park. Park staff and campground host are very helpful and know the surrounding area well. Host drives through the campground in the evening selling firewood. We camped at Sunset Bay State Park in a Motorhome.
