From Frenchglen this is about a 3-mile drive on a washboard dirt road at 15 mph to get to the campground area. Many of the campsites are best for smaller rigs, but we had a few to choose from that fit our truck and small travel trailer. Plenty of shade available on some sites, and lots of space. Very scenic. I think this would be a great place to stay in the spring or fall outside of mosquito season, unfortunately when we camped there they were unbearable. A month sooner would have been better due to the cooler weather. Spray repels the mosquitoes somewhat but not enough ... they'll bite through your clothing like nothing. Many of the people camping at the park were bird nerds with full mosquito netting and gear. We were planning to stay 2 nights but left after 1. We camped at Page Springs Campground - BLM in a Travel Trailer.

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $8.00
Overall Rating:

This is one of the nicest BLM campgrounds we've been to. Some sites are close, others far apart. During our stay we had options for both. Clean restrooms, pit toilets, nice cement picnic tables, fire pits. Hikes available, on the Blitzen river. Wild Redside Trout fishing, catch and release. At the foot of the Steens Mountain, take the 50 mile loop road to the top and back. Beautiful, about 10,000 feet at the top. We had early snow, but it melted off when the weather warmed. Near the little town of French Glen, store, gas, hotel and school is about it. Go to the French Glenn hotel for breakfast lunch or dinner. Great food in this historic little hotel. Be prepared for Ralph. Gravel road 3 miles from town. Dusty and washboard, but worth the effort. Birders Paradise. We camped at Page Springs Campground - BLM in a Travel Trailer.

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $8.00
Overall Rating:

Nicest BLM campground we've ever seen. Newer ADA bathrooms. Many sites spaced quite far apart. Grass growing vigorously in May, mowed by park staff. Lovely trail taking off from the end of the campground along the Blitzen River. Tried to make the loop on the Wilderness Nature trail but never found a place where it would loop around back to the campground. Beautiful hike anyway. The springs are very pretty, and the river provides serenity and habitat for lots of birds. We saw a pair of cinnamon teal in the waterway from the springs to the river. This waterway flows through the campground. No mosquitoes during our visit, but while eating at the Frenchglen Hotel (excellent food BTW) we overheard a BLM field worker saying they would be out soon "in force." The loop road to Steens (closed this early) starts within walking distance of the park. The park is at the south end of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge, a great place to stay while exploring there. We camped at Page Springs Campground - BLM in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Malheur Wildlife Refuge, Frenchglen Hotel (restaurant food is excellent), small grocery/sundries store next to the hotel, Steens Mountain scenic loop road, several ranches in the area, including the Round Barn. The historical museum in Burns is an excellent place to start a trip to this area - going here first will give you a good idea of the history of the area and the families who came there first to settle.

3 mile gravel road in, very pleasant BLM campground. Spaces are not too close together. By river and wildlife area. Some hiking. Verizon worked great here! We camped at Page Springs Campground - BLM in a Motorhome.
