Kind of like a poor BLM campground with hookups. Rutted, nasty four Mile dirt road in, un level sites, mosquitoes beyond all recognition and just unkempt. Certainly not a "Resort", by anyone's stretch of the imagination!!! We camped at Steens Mountain Resort in a Motorhome.

If you want level, you'll have to bring your own. Not one of the sites looked level in any way. The driveways are very long, though, so you can decide which part to park in. Only problem is that the sewers are at the very end, so unless you have 100 feet of sewer hose, you don't have all that much choice. There are 30 amp sites, and for an additional fee, 50 amp. The sites, while long, are rather close together, but since the campground was nearly empty at the end of April, this wasn't a problem. Camp store is advertised, but was quite low on RV items, including no tp. Lots of trees, but the scrubby piñon variety. Great views! Picnic tables at each site, in various stages of repair from new to splintery. There are several cabins on the site, also in various stages of repair. This place needs a Lot of work! Owners/hosts were friendly and willing to help. Very, very quiet day and nite with beautiful and plentiful stars. If you like the high desert, you'll enjoy this place. It is "only" 60 miles from Burns, but it feels like the exact middle of a very large nowhere. Bring your own....just about everything! We camped at Steens Mountain Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

People come here to see birds. There is an auto tour loop, and several hiking trails. Also a CD that you can borrow and play to accompany your auto tour. Much of the birding can be done from your vehicle. Headquarters is the place to start. Lots of other animals to see as well, and several historical places/buildings, including the Frenchglen Hotel. The Mercantile in Frenchglen has diesel. The hotel has a restaurant. Don't blink when you go thru town or you'll miss it!

This park is in a lovely setting, the bird life is fantastic. We saw at least five to ten different species from our campsite. The bathrooms and showers are in good shape and very clean. Although, I didn't use the laundry, it was clean, roomy and new. The gravel sites were well spaced. I wish there were more shady sites. It was over 90 degrees and hard to take in our little non air conditioned trailer. I wouldn't say it's a great park, but I'd happily stay there again. We camped at Steens Mountain Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Great RV park with plenty of room. Smack in the middle of the Oregon Outback. This is one of the few parks that offers grass in this area. All others are gravel only which frustrates the dog. Camp has 50 Amps, sewer and excellent water. NOTE: water pressure is low, 20 lbs. We had to run our water pump to make up the difference. Most sites are over 100ft long. You will need at least three sewer hose sections to reach the pipe. There is a class A trail out the back of the park that gives hikers access to some beautiful scenery such as a rock bluff overlooking Dunder Und Blitzen River. We will definitely go back. Plenty to do and see, especially recommend the Steens Mountain driving loop. Spectacular! We camped at Steens Mountain Resort in a Motorhome.

Worth the drive to get to. So quiet it is almost deafening. Great sites around. We camped at Steens Mountain Resort in a Motorhome.

The good: close to the 9th wonder of the world, The Steens Mtn.; the managers and owner are knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and all around good folk; very long spaces; clean campground; really nice bathrooms and showers; sites are pretty level and all gravel, rock and dirt; nothing luxurious about this place (resort is an overstatement); a good place to be if you're main interest is leaving and exploring the area - which you should do. The bad: be sure to check your site first. There are some really nice, long pull-thrus along the west side and some long and not so great pull-thrus on the south side. Some of the south side spaces have 'humps', level gravel spots that are followed by a significant drop to the driveway out of the site. Some of these drop a good foot on a very short grade. Some sites have trees close on both sides, possibly making your positioning difficult to easily reach both the sewer and water/power connections. The ugly: the road over the mountain usually doesn't open until early to mid-July, just in time for the mosquitoes. In this campground they are annoying, but in other campgrounds on the mountain they are down right nasty. Bring plenty of DEET. Later in the season the mosquitoes drop off and bees pick up. But, hey, you're in the wilderness. Make sure you gas up in Burns. It's 60 miles to Burns and 60 miles to Fields. As of this report, the store at French Glen down the hill has unleaded and diesel, and it's expensive. (But so is Fields.) We camped at Steens Mountain Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

This is definitely a rustic camp, and you have to drive 3 miles on a very washboardy road to get to the camp. It is high desert for sure. But the camp is very nice with a great view of the valley. Sites are all dirt but fairly even and pull through. Our biggest problem here was mosquito's (it was a bad year for them and July might be the worst month for them). Definitely an interesting place, if I were in this area I would stay here again. We camped at Steens Mountain Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

A real out of the way place but so is the area. You need to travel about 3 miles of washboard gravel road to get there. But its worth it. Management was friendly and helpful. Sites were a bit rough but spaced nicely apart. Its a dry place but next to the game refuge that includes many wet areas. A great place to stay while hunting up that rare bird to photograph. Be prepared to get good and dusty. We camped at Steens Mountain Resort in a Travel Trailer.
